SETTEMBRE MUSICA

Optical illusions

in Turin

Over the past few years, EnzoRestagno and Roman Vlad havesucceeded in focussing the atten-tion of the musical world on Turinduring the month of September.Restagno and Vlad are the creativeminds behind the Settembre Musi-ca festival, which surpasses allother Italian music festivals interms of diverse cultural origins, styles and historical periods - view-ed more closely, the festival appe-ars as an optical illusion, offeringnot a diffuse image but a cleverlyconceived, harmonious concept ca-pable of offering almost any musiclover something surprising or de-lectable.

The traditional emphasis of the fe-stival is on contemporary music, with a composer at its centrewhose oeuvre receives representa-tive treatment. In 2004, this com-poser is Arvo Pärt. Enzo Restagnoinvolved Pärt closely in the festi-val's programming. Numerous per-formers requested by the compo-ser (Hilliard Ensemble, Tõnu Kaljuste, Estonian PhilharmonicChamber Choir, Paul Hillier, XeniaEnsemble, etc.) will be appearing.

This collaboration over severalmonths also offered the opportuni-ty to produce a book on Arvo Pärt,which Enzo Restagno will presenton 7 Sep. It is based on an extensi-ve conversation with Restagno du-ring the summer of 2003, and alsocontains several important contri-butions by reputable Pärt experts(including Leopold Brauneiss, PaulHillier, Jordi Savall, Armin Brunnerand Helga de la Motte).

Over the course of seven concerts(6 - 12 September 2004), the majorworks of Pärt's most recent periodwill be heard; several of these willbe receiving their first performan-ces in Italy:Lamentate, In Principio, Wall-fahrtslied, and Most Holy Mother ofGod.

LUCERNE FESTIVAL

Lucerne Festival

Academy

The theme at Lucerne this year isFreedom, and a new project, theLucerne Festival Academy, aims 'toinstil a deeper appreciation for themusic of the 20th and 21st centuriesin musicians and audiences alike, tostrengthen the position of thismusic in the present day, and tocontinue to direct our gaze towardthe future'.

Fittingly, Pierre Boulez is the figurewho has been invited as artistic director to launch this excitingnew venture. Since 28th August(until 16th September), 120 highlytalented young artists have beenstudying and performing selectedworks from the 20th and 21st cen-

turies, in close co-operation withBoulez himself, Ensemble Intercon-temporain, and the Conservatoryof Music Lucerne.

The Academy thus has at its dispo-sal the best and most experiencedteachers available in the field ofcontemporary music.Boulez, for example, is holding amasterclass for young conductors, and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who isfeatured at the festival in honourof his 70th birthday, is workingalongside students from the Festi-val Academy. The culmination ofthis collaboration is a performanceworkshop to include a selection ofhis chamber works.

Other Birtwistle works featuredduring the festival are Earth Dances(played by the Festival AcademyOrchestra and conducted by PierreBoulez on 16 September) and histhree major ensemble works Tragoedia, Secret Theatre (14 Sept)and Ritual Fragment. (SusannaMälkki directs Ensemble Intercon-temporain on 29 August 2004).Information:www.lucernefestival.ch

AUTUMN FESTIVALS

Æstonishing Arvo

This is, of course, Arvo Pärt. His oeuvre is at the centre of a wholeseries of important concert eventsthis musical autumn. And withouta doubt, Italy is the central loca-tion.

Recently admitted to the Accade-mia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia asan honorary member, Pärt is ‘fea-tured composer’ at the SettembreMusica Turin (see report on pp. 7-9of this issue).

The opening of the renowned Biennale di Venezia with a perfor-mance of Arvo Pärt's Como ciervasedienta (for soprano and orche-stra) on 14 October 2004 is yet an-other indication of the Italian mu-sical scene's admiration for thecomposer.

Interest in Pärt's music is not limi-ted to Italy, of course. An Arvo PärtFestival is to take place from 20-24October in Groningen/Leeuwar-den, the Netherlands. This festivalwill be staged by the Noord Neder-lands Orkest and its artistic direc-tor Marcel Mandos. The event'stitle is Æstonishing Music - musicfrom Estonia juxtaposed with themusic of Arvo Pärt. Several impor-tant Pärt works will be given theirfirst performances in the Nether-lands on this occasion, includingLamentate (for piano and orche-stra), In Principio (for choir and or-chestra) and Wallfahrtslied (formale choir and string orchestra).

The countless performances thisautumn will also include the Ger-man première of Lamentate at theBerlin Philharmony (Deutsches SO,c. Simone Young, Alexei Lubimov, piano).

For the 100th birthday of the Or-questa Sinfónica de Madrid,Cristóbal Halffter - Composer-in-Residence of the orchestra - was in-vited to compose a thoroughly Spa-nish piece. Halffter's ear wascaught by Isaac Albeniz' piano cycleIberia. He attempted notsimply to orchestrate it, but to re-work the piano part in order to givethe orchestra the role of the maininstrument. The world première ofEritaña for orchestra takes place on30 Dec 2004 at Madrid's Teatro Real

under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos.

‘Europe grows together’. This quo-tation comes from the festival pro-gramme's introduction and refersto this year's emphasis: the Tirole-an festival Klangspuren Schwazwill be featuring music from thenew EU member states.

Alongside works by Zoltán Kodályand György Ligeti, the festival'svery first concert on 10 Septemberwill feature the revised version ofVykintas Baltakas' Poussla for solo-ist ensemble and orchestra, a piecewith an unmistakable Lithuanianfolk music influence.

The events continue with a discus-sion between the composer and Lithuania's former prime minister,

musicologist Vytautas Landsbergis, followed by a concert with theGaida Ensemble conducted by Baltakas: a new addition to thecomposer’s cycle of Lieder with andwithout voice, still in progress, willbe premièred, preceded by Das Liedfor piano and tape as well as ande-res Lied. His Cello Concerto, commissionedby musica viva and premièred on 9 July in Munich, has been very positively received by music critics:

With his Cello Concerto, Georg Friedrich Haas has brought forth atruly great work. (Gabriele Luster,Münchner Merkur)With his Cello Concerto (playedwith compelling intensity by Clemens Hagen), Haas abducted hislisteners into a hitherto unknownworld of overtones - a journey tothe most remote regions of sonicsensibility and a soft blending ofconventional melodicism withfuzzy, micro-tonal friction. STOCKHAUSEN

A modern classic

Some of the compositions by Karl-heinz Stockhausen to be heardsoon in Berlin, Paris and Viennahave a performance history of overhalf a century.Kontra-Punkte, for example, whichis listed in the composer's cata-logue of works as No. 1, was com-posed in 1952/53 (on the program-me of Klangforum Wien under Friedrich Cerha on 19 Oct in Berlin). The Piano Pieces I-XI, which Benjamin Kobler will be perfor-ming on 11, 12 and 13 Sep at theHaus der Berliner Festspiele, werecomposed between 1952 and 1956.It has been 40 years since Mikro-phonie I., No. 15, written for tam-tam, 2 microphones, 2 filters andpotentiometer, was composed andpremièred in Brussels (EIC, in Parison 24 Sep). The same year also produced Mix-tur, also to be heard in a Paris con-cert of the EIC - but in the scaled-down 1967 version for orchestra, sine wave generators and ring mo-dulators (which bears the number16 1/2). Conductor: Jonathan Nott. All these works, as well as the composer's accompanying texts, are valuable documents of post-war composing history. And theyhaven't lost nothing of their origi-nal freshness.

In the years following the FirstWorld War, Franz Schreker's oeuvreheld a dominant position in Cen-tral European opera house pro-gramming. Unparalleled

Renaissance

2004 has seen the musical worldcommemorate the 150th birthdayof the great Moravian composerLeos Janácek - but in truth, everyyear is a Janácek year. His operas, awelcome challenge for opera com-panies all over the world, havebeen experiencing an unparalleledrenaissance.

Jenufa is probably the most popu-lar (in Warsaw, Brno, Toulouse andBarcelona), to be followed in themonths thereafter by The CunningLittle Vixen (new productions inDüsseldorf, Kiel and Chicago) andThe Makropoulos Case (Braun-schweig and Moscow). From theHouse of the Dead will see its Bonnpremière, as will The Excursions ofMr. Broucek in Gera. ConcerningThe Glagolitic Mass, conductors canchose between the original versionedited by Paul Wingfield and thecomposer's final version (soon inSingapore). Sinfonietta will be per-formed this autumn in four cities(Stuttgart, Bonn, Brno and London),the rhapsody Taras Bulba in Brno,Geneva and Lausanne. Among theopera suites, the one from The Cun-ning Little Vixen seems to hold aspecial attraction (23-24 Novemberin Montreal).

BRAUNFELS

Wexford 2

Walter Braunfels composed theoriginal version of his PrinzessinBrambilla in 1909 at the age of 24.Of his later 1931 version, which Ireland's Wexford Festival will alsogive at the Wexford Festival Operaon 16 October, he wrote:

Here, for the first time, an attemptwas made to escape the compellingpower of Richard Wagner's over-whelming genius, via a grotesquethumbing of the nose at all thatwas tragic or pathetic. But the trulyyouthful thing about it was that I wasn't even really conscious of myinternal resistance to Wagner, whom I loved with a passion - I thought I was offering just an occasional parody of RichardStrauss …. in one fell swoop, the pathetic scenes were decimated andreplaced by short pieces necessaryfor the development, the orchestrawas reduced to one fourth its size, and the score was completely re-written, although it did retain itsoriginal spirit. What remained werethe over-confident and grotesquemoments of the original work - butshortened, so that Princess Brambil-la, in operatic form as well, had be-come what E.T.A. Hoffmann calledhis novella: a Capriccio.

FOERSTER

Wexford 1

The Wexford Festival will give theopera Eva by Joseph Bohuslav Foer-ster, premièred in 1899 in Prague, another chance to gain popularityin the West (première: 15 October2004).

It has received periodic perfor-mances in its composer's Czech homeland, but was last performedabroad in 1925. Foerster took his inspiration from an early drama ofGabriela Preissová, whose Její pastorkyna formed the basis for Janácek's Jenufa. The plot is moreclosely related to Katia Kabánová,and the music is of strong lyricalquality.

Friedrich Meyer-Oertel's fascina-ting production of Friedrich Cerha'sDer Rattenfänger at the Vienna Fe-stival on 11-13 June was every bit assuccessful as the one at the Staats-theater Darmstadt (conductor: Ste-fan Blunier). Even just the reviewheadlines make clear its outstan-ding impact:

Weighty seduction through andthrough (Der Standard), Rivetingand Powerful (Salzburger Nachrich-ten), A Pied Piper you'd like to havehang around a while (Kurier), Fasci-nating total work of art (Tiroler Ta-geszeitung), Seductive power endu-res unbroken (Kleine Zeitung). As long as there are composers likeFriedrich Cerha, we shouldn't be allthat worried about the future of thegenre; we need simply to take thefew operas Cerha has produced andplay them over and over again, writes Gert Korentschnig in the Kurier.A riveting opera. Baltakas is an enormous talent; heknows exactly what he wants andwhat he can justify musically - andhe doesn't succumb to convention.Turbulent music theatre with con-genial stage direction by OskarasKorsunovas.(Reinhard Schulz, NMZ)

Cantio was one of the most appea-ling séances in the Biennale's history. (Hans Klaus Jungheinrich,Frankfurter Rundschau)

As a contribution to the discourseon opera's future, Cantio definitelyhas its qualities. (Gerhard Rohde,Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

STAUD

Berenice in Mu-

nich and Vienna

Press reviews of Berenice (May 04):This introduction is so chillingly beautiful that it could hardly everbe surpassed - even if Staud's sonicinventiveness and talent for imagi-native instrumentation do seem tobe inexhaustible. (Eleonore Bühning, FAZ). Musically, Staud has opened up con-siderably compared to his earlierworks. Particularly in the momentswhen Berenice sings, he approachesthe realm of entertainment music, tango, blues and jazz. These are notemployed in the post-modern senseof a musical-linguistic collage, butfunction as a lascivious, soft mass ofimmediate, superficial, sensuous at-traction. (Reinhard Schulz, SZ). His openness is notable, and his approach is non-dogmatic. A delicate tango here, a bluesy musi-cal ballad there, creepily floatingglissandi, eerily abstract cantilenas. Not to mention a wonderful musi-cal stalactite cavern of the orche-stra, of noise-like sounds from tape,of jazz from the brass. And lots ofpercussiveness to go around. (Ljubi-sa Tosic, Der Standard)In Staud's universe, word and soundachieve unity …. The result is musicaltheatre in the most literal sense.(Peter Jarolin, Kurier)

DALLAPICCOLA

Volo di notte

in Frankfurt

Press reviews of Volo di notte byLuigi Dallapiccola at the OperaFrankfurt, 6 - 19 June 2004:

This 'night flight' shows the suscep-tibility even of critical minds to theheroic ideology of the decade bet-ween futurism and fascism. Theflight director might give up his life, but the idea of the night flight willprevail - so close your eyes and offwe go. (Dietmar Polaczek, SZ)

…an appealing, accessible and thea-trically conceived score, brought tolife in all its plasticity by the Frank-furter Museumsorchester underMartyn Brabbins.(Elisabeth Schwind, NZZ)
