AstrologyisasoldasVedasthemselves.TheVedaswhicharethesacredHinduscriptures,embodyeternal

knowledge.StrictmoralandspiritualpracticesalongwiththedeepstudyareprerequisitiestounderstandtheessenceofVedas.Totheuninitiated,theVedasmightappearasnothingmorethanritualisticoblationstoair,waterandthunder

etc.Deeptruths,howeverbegintounfoldtothetrueseekerashissearchgoeson.

Intimeofyore,sincereseekersoftruthandknowledgeinIndiausedtospendyearsandyearsatthefeetoftheir

'gurus',learningthemeaninghiddeninVedas.InordertodecipherwhatliesconcealedinVedas,astudyofcertain

subjectsisconsideredaprerequisite.Thesesubjectsarecalledthe'Vedangas'orthebodyorgansoftheVedas.There

aresixsuchvedangas.Theyare:

(A)Shiksha:WhichdealswiththeunderstandingoftheVedic'Varanas','Swaras'andMantras,andthuswiththetechniqueofcorrectpronunciation.

(B)Chhanda:DealingwiththeappropriatelyricalutteranceoftheVedic'Suktas'.(C)Vyakarana:Expoudingthegrammaticalaspectsofthelanguage.(D)Nirukta:Whichexplainsthedifficultwords,'padas'and'mantras'.(E)Kalpa:DealingwiththeunderstandingofSutrasandtheuseofMantras,henceconcernedwiththeritualisticaspectsoftheVedas.

(F)Jyotisha or strology:OfthebodycalledtheVedas,astrologyrepresentsthe'eyes'withitscapacitytoseethepast,thepresentandthefuture.AstrologyisconsideredasthemostimportantoftheVedangas.

What is strology ?Astrologyisthescientificstudyandapplicationoflanguageoftheheavenlybodies.Theseheavenlybodiesdetermined

onthebasisofAstronomyandmathematics,aremappedintheformofahoroscope.Theirspecificlocationsinthe

horoscopeindicatespecifichappeningsinthecaseofindividuals,ofmultitudesandofgeographicalregions.WhethertheSun,theMoon,theplanetsandstarsthemselvesinfluencetheterrestrialphenomena,ortheyonlyindicatesuch

phenomenabytheirvariousdispositions,isimmaterial.Whatisimportanttousisthatvariationsintheirdispositiondeterminevariationsintheeventsontheearth;thecorrelationsareonlytoostrongtobebrushedasidebycriticsof

Astrology.

Who should practise astrology ?Intheancienttimes,astrictcodeofconductwasdemandedofthosewhopractisedAstrology.Aguruwouldteach

astrologyonlytodeservingdisciplewhowouldadheretosuchacodeofconduct.Theguru-shishya(i.e.,theteacher-disciple)traditionisalreadylongoverinIndia.Withchangingtimes,ithasbecomedifficulttofindanappropriate'guru'

andadeserving'shishya'topursuethisscaredstudywithintheruleslaidbythesagesofyore.Itis,however,quitein

ordertobeawareofthisancientcodeofconduct.Varamihira,thecelebratedauthorityonastrology,prescribesthe

followingqualificationsforanastrologer:

(b)Moral soundness:Heshouldbetruthful,gentle,bereftofcravingsandaversions,clearofheart,notinclinedtobecriticalofthequalitiesofothers,devoidofbaseandwordlydistractions.

(c)Behaviour in an assembly:Heshouldbeclever,abletoexpresshimself,boldinanassembly,notintimidatedbyhisfellowastrologers,dignifiedandawareoftheconstraintsofsocialandhistoricalcircumstances.

(d)Proficiency in the subject of strology:Heshouldbewell-read,andproficientinthethreebranchesofAstrologyknownasGanita,theSamhitaandthehora.Hemusthavestudiedthefivesiddhantas(ormathematicaltreatises).Hismathematicalproficiencymustincludetheknowledgeofvariousdivisionsoftime,fromthegrossonelikeyugatothe

finerones.Hemustalsopossessknowledgeofthevariousdivisions,includingthefinestones,ofthezodiac.

(e)Proficiency in various branches of strology:Theastrologerisrequiredtopossessaknowledgeofdifferentaspectsofastrologywhichdealwithpropitiationofplanets,renderingtheplanetsbeneficialorhostile,conducting

religiousceremonies,andritualswhichhelpneutralisethenaturalcalamities.

(f)Defence of strology:Theastrologermustbeabletoanswerqueries,andalsoposerelevantquestionswhereappropriate.Whennecessary,heshouldbeabletodazzleothersbyhisknowledge,onlytoincreasethedignityof

astrology.

TheSageParasharaadvocatesasimilarcodeofconductforastrologers,stressingparticularlyonthenecessityfor

technicalintellectualandmoralexcellence;thecapacitytoweightheprosandconsofasituation,alongwiththeability

tosynthesizeacoherentpredictionbasedonsoundknowledgeoftheprinciples,sometimesapparentlycontradictory,oknowledge.

Sub-Divisions of strologyTherearethreemainsub-divisionsofAstrology.

(1)Samhita:Thisdealswithcollectivityormultitudes.Itencompassessuchvariedareasasweatherforecasts,agriculturalproduce,naturaldisasters,floods,famines,wars,earthquakes,cyclones,markettrends,changesin

government,nationalandinternationalevents,andvirtuallyanythingthatinfluencesthemasses.Theannualworld

predictionswhicharegenerallybasedeitheronHinduNewYearcommencingontheChaitraShuklaPratipada,oron

thesolarIngressintoMesha,fallundertheSamhitaastrology.

(2)Siddhanta or Tantra or Ganita:Thisdealswiththemathematicalaspectsofastrology.ThereareseveraltreatisesonSiddhantaAstrologybutfiveamongthemareconsideredasparticularlyimportant.Theyare:

(a)SuryaSiddhanta

(b)PaulishaSiddhanta

(c)RomakaSiddhanta

(d)VasishthaSiddhanta

(e)PaitamahaSiddhanta
