INDUSTRY UPDATE DETAILING MAJOR CHANGES IN THE DESIGN, INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING AND CERTIFICATION OF FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEMS INCLUDING SMOKE CONTROL.

OVERVIEWAS 1670.1:2015 is a primary reference Standard within the National Construction Code – Building Code of Australia 2016. The 2015 release is the first in over a decade. It not only addresses known short comings of the 2004 revision such as fire rating and speech intelligibility, it also brings the Standard to a contemporary level to improve readability and application. Significant changes have been made to simplify the use of the Standard thereby making system design and compliance easier to achieve and verify. AS 1670.1-2015 better defines the roles and responsibilities of the system designer, installer and commissioning agent making performance and compliance validation easier.

Product compliance and system performance are very real issues today. The new Standard places a greater focus on not only ensuring individual system components are certified to the relevant product standard, but also the compatibility of these components as part of system design.

A further significant change to the Standard has been the inclusion of initiation and control of smoke control systems. These have been taken from AS 1668.1 and AS 4428.7 and introduced within this revision to remove potential conflicts and improve compliance.

There are many key elements of the system design that have been modernized and this seminar will address each of these, providing a background as to why the change has been made and what the likely impact of the change will be going forward. AS 1670.1-2015 was first referenced in the 2016 edition of the Building Code of Australia which came into effect on 1st May 2016. It is therefore critical for all practitioners, design consultants, equipment suppliers and manufacturers, fire technicians and anyone else who interacts with fire detection systems to raise their knowledge and understanding of the new Standard by attending one of these seminars.

THE RELEASE OF AS 1670.1-2015 MARKS THE BIGGEST MASS CHANGE OF ELECTRICAL FIRE STANDARDS IN OVER A DECADE. MAJOR CONCEPT CHANGES TO OCCUPANT WARNING SYSTEMS, DISTRIBUTION, WIRING INTEGRITY REQUIREMENTS AND INTERFACE ISSUES WITH SPRINKLER SYSTEMS HAVE ALL BEEN INCLUDED IN THE NEW STANDARD.
