ASAT is a not-for-prot organization of parents and
professionals committed to improving the
education, treatment, and care of people with
autism. Since autism was rst identied, there has
been a long history of failed treatments and fads,
levied on vulnerable individuals as well as on their
families. From the scandal of the refrigerator
mother theory, to the ongoing parade of miracle
cures and magical breakthroughs, history hasbeen dominated by improbable theories about
causation and treatments.
Since ASAT was established in 1998, it has been our
goal to work toward adopting higher standards of
accountability for the care, education and treat-
ment of all individuals with autism.

Improving Observational Learning Skills in Children withAutism - Bridget Taylor Psy.D., BCBA-D (ASAT Board
Member)
It is commonly recognized that children with autism present
with signicant decits in imitation and observationallearning. Most contemporary curricula for children with
autism incorporate instruction in a variety of imitative
response topographies. Less common in applied research
and practice, however, are procedures to ensure that children
with autism learn to acquire novel responses through
observational learning. This presentation will outline
instructional programs that move beyond direct imitation to
the skills essential for observational learning. Specic
procedures to increase observational learning in children
with autism across a variety of responses will be reviewed.
Technology and Learning: Developing Innovative Teaching
Methods for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders -Mary E. McDonald, Ph.D., BCBA-D (ASAT Vice President)
The workshop will provide information on a variety of
technology-based instructional methods that can be used to
teach skills to individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
Specic areas as they pertain to skill development will
include use of iTouch, iPad, video technology and tactile
prompts. A variety of other technology-based tools will be
discussed and depicted through video. Specic areas of
learning will focus on promoting independence, vocational
skills, eective communication and social skills. The future
applications of technology for those with ASD will be
explored as well.
Using the Principles of Science in Everyday Educational
Practices with Young Children with Autism -
Daniel W. Mruzek, Ph.D., BCBA-D (ASAT Board Member)
In a eld lled with countless intervention options, how dowe know if any one intervention is helpful for a particularchild? This presentation will use real-life case examples todescribe how educators and parents can use key principles ofscience to inform decisions regarding intervention in youngchildren with autism. Emphasis will be placed on consider-ation of interventions typically applied in the school andtherapy settings (e.g., instructional supports, responses tobehavioral challenges, therapies) and how deliberate use of
the scientic method can be used as part of a team approachto promoting best practices in intervention with youngchildren with autism.
