COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 2 OCTOBER 2013

There’s excitement in the air! A legion of volunteers is hard at work planning and o r g a n i z i n g c o n c e r t production, fundraising and music education for all ages. Their high energy and enthusiasm is both contagious and inspiring, and their strong volunteer commitment and the financial support of our many patrons make the programs of the Coastal

Symphony of Georgia, Inc. (CSG) possible.

The Coastal Symphony of Georgia, Inc., the umbrella organization for the Symphony and its two vital affiliates, the Coastal Youth Symphony and The Symphony Society, serve to unite our efforts to provide quality symphonic music to our community and music education for our youth.

The Board of Directors recently held a very productive strategic planning retreat and board orientation led by Cindy Kelley, professor at Savannah State University. Our new board members brought fresh perspectives to the discussion as we worked to update our vision and goals for the future. Your input will also be

sought as we continue to refine our strategic plan over the next several months. We hope that you will share your ideas in an upcoming audience survey to help us move forward to best serve those in our community who enjoy symphonic music.

Have you ordered your season tickets yet? Remember, that as a member of the Conductor’s Circle, you will enjoy the season from premium, reserved seats and have the opportunity to be invited to special events including the “Meet the Maestro” cocktail reception welcoming Maestro Haza at the Sea Island home of Bob and Gerry O’Brien. I hope to see you there and at our first concert of the season on October 28th!

Alice Barlow, President, Coastal Symphony of Georgia

General Manager’s Corner It is a privilege to welcome you to the opening concert of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia’s 31st season! Maestro Haza has programmed a stellar selection of classical favorites. As General Manager and a performing member of the orchestra, I’m excited and honored to serve you, the patrons of the CSG and look

forward to seeing you throughout the season.

The October 28th concert opens with the Coronation March, a famous excerpt from a less well-known opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer, first performed in 1849 in Paris. This rousing and familiar selection demonstrates why Meyerbeer was the dominant opera composer of the mid nineteenth century.

Guest Violinist Caroline Chéhadé will perform one of the most challenging concertos in the violin repertoire. The Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 is considered to be as difficult as it is beautiful with expansive melodies that will remind you of his native Finland. Heralded as “one of the most talented violinists of her generation” and “a true violinist,”

Caroline Chéhadé, performs actively throughout America and Europe. A second-time winner of the Musical Instrument Bank Competition, Ms. Chéhadé was awarded in 2009 the Windsor-Weinstein Stradivari of 1717 from the Canada Council for the Arts. She is a grand prizewinner in numerous solo competitions.

Tchaikovsky conducted his last symphony, Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique” in B Minor Opus 74, at its premier in 1893 in St. Petersburg, a week before his death at 53. Thus the subtitle “pathetic” has been the subject of continuing controversy suggesting that it may go beyond just the invoking of general human suffering. The music is familiar since excerpts have been used in the scores of a number of films and events, including the Closing Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The musicians and the entire Coastal Symphony of Georgia organization thank you for your continued support. We promise you an extraordinary season of world class music.

Symphony Society – Full Steam Ahead!

Fall is always the busiest time for the Symphony Society as our dedicated membership is focused on achieving success for our two big fundraisers – The Golden Elephant Flea Market & Cabaret 2104!

The Symphony Society

The Golden Elephant will have already been held by the time you read this newsletter. Lead by the very capable co-chair team of Sharon Flores, Sibby Gruber and Susie Salvatore, the event was pushed up over a month early this year to Friday & Saturday, Sept. 27 & 28, with the Preview Party on Wednesday, Sept. 25. With very little advanced notice of this change in dates, the team was in great shape to execute a fabulous showing of Flea Market items that had been donated and collected since early spring. Once again, we are greatly indebted to the generosity of Dee Wright who allowed us use of her property at 1810 Frederica Road, now for the fifth straight year. Please read the next issue of this newsletter for the results of the Golden Elephant's success.

Cabaret 2104, will be held at the beautiful Cloister on February 8, 2014. This year, marks the 10th anniversary of this signature gala event, and the leadership team of Sue Cansler and Lisa Martin and a committee of over 30, are now busy at work making all the magic happen. There will be a few new surprises added to Cabaret this year, so you will not want to miss this exciting celebration which is always a rewarding evening with cocktails, an elegant seated dinner with paired wines, live entertainment with dancing, silent and live auctions, exciting raffle and much more.

All in all, it promises to be a truly memorable evening and you’ll want to be part of this, our signature fund raising effort. So mark your 2014 calendar for February 8th and get ready to raise a toast to Cabaret’s 10th Anniversary.

As the key volunteer and fundraising auxiliary for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia and the Coastal Youth Symphony, the Symphony Society is focused on helping promote the continuance and enjoyment of symphonic enrichment in the Golden Isles Community. Since 2006, The Symphony Society has raised $832,500 to support our symphonies.

Many thanks to all who support our Society events, and special thanks to our 300+ Society members who are so dedicated to our cause.

COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 6 OCTOBER 2013

Under the leadership of Maestro Luis Haza and CYS manager Lucy Thomas, 52 students, 16 instructors and 4 college interns gathered at the Coastal of Coastal Georgia for the CYS’s third annual instructional music camp. Individual, sectional and whole orchestra instruction, introducing the music for the 2013 December concert, provided the framework for a week of rigorous learning. The traditional SRO Thursday performance for the community this year featured Maestro Haza and CYS assistant conductor Ray Clark, CYS musicians Kate Lane, Jacob Haymans and Brooke Harris, and the CYS Chamber Ensemble, under the leadership of Beverly Fetter and Martie Pahris. Auditions were held in July and August. Rehearsals are being held at Jane Macon Middle School. Refer to the website for the schedule.

In the world of CYS musicians, spring is a time of a standing-room only concert under the baton of Maestro Luis Haza and demonstrations of newly learned skills. Summer is the time to move up to the next musical level and to welcome members new to CYS.

April and May were recital months for family and friends. In June, many student musicians practiced hard to get ready for camp and some participated in leadership activities. The third annual CYS camp was a huge success and concluded with a Petit Recital showcasing camp instructors and young musicians. Auditions followed and rehearsals for this year’s December 8th concert began in earnest. Classroom strings programs began again at Glynn Academy and at three of the districts’ four middle schools: Risley, Glynn and Needwood. New for the CYS this year is an instructional program at The Lower School at Frederica Academy and the CYSymphonette, a beginning orchestra for local students with at least one year of experience playing a string instrument.

New at the third annual CYS camp at the College of Coastal Georgia was a Summer Primary Orchestra, led by Primary Strings (PS) program director Crystal Murphy. Funding for all summertime PS experiences was provided by grants from ECW of Christ Church Frederica, Parker Poe Charitable Trust, Rotary Club of St. Simons Island, The Symphony Society, Elkin Alston, and donations to the Coastal Symphony of Georgia. An important part of this program was the instruction provided by Jacksonville University intern Peter Greene and Florida State University doctorate candidate Peter Dutilly, and CYS graduates Malcolm Mann (Murray State), Jenissa Gordon (University of Georgia) and Rickey Foster (College of Coastal Georgia.) Frederica Academy student Maddie Myers served as an instructional aide. Additional instruction was offered in July.

The CYS is partnering with Frederica Academy to offer a strings instruction program for fourth and fifth graders. Using the Orff musical approach, Amy Bishop, The Lower School at Frederica Academy’s music teacher, has developed a foundation on which Crystal Murphy, a CYS instructor, will build, to teach these students play a string instrument. Frederica Adademy students Ted Davis, Maddie Myers and Emma Thomas, CYS members, will be assisting.

Above: Crystal Murphy instructs a group of Frederica fifth grade students with assistance from Ted Davis, a member of the Frederica senior school class.

Members of the Coastal Youth Symphony Chamber Ensemble are shown above after a summer-time performance at St. Simons Island Presbyterian Church. Under the direction of Beverly Fetter and Martie Pahris, the select musicians are the CYS’s year-around public face in Glynn County, bringing classical music to churches, to nursing homes and the hospital, to weddings and other celebrations, to special events and to fund raisers. Members practice together an extra day a week preparing for these diverse events.

The seven member Class of 2013 CYS seniors were honored at the orchestra’s Spring Concert. From left: Drew Adams (viola, Glynn Academy, Indiana Wesleyan University), Karis Williams (percussion, Glynn Academy, Brenau University), Chelsea Brown (French horn, Brunswick High, Kennesaw State University), Malcolm Mann (standing bass, Frederick Academy, Murray State University), Jada Taylor (percussion, Brunswick High School, University of Georgia), Anissa McKenna (clarinet, Brunswick High School, University of Arizona), and Margy Hayes (oboe, Glynn Academy, Georgia State University). Adams and Mann were founding members of the CYS. Hayes won the coveted Fogarty Award with its $500 scholarship. The ten CYS members, the last who began their strings careers before Glynn County Schools ended their elementary strings instruction, will graduate this year. Replacing all of them will require an increased emphasis this year

The members of CYS and Primary Strings who received violin and viola instruction because of the generosity of local donors finished the school year by presenting a recital for friends and family. Pictured above with them are instructor Crystal Murphy and three of the CYS high school students (middle, back row) who also served as instructors.
