An Honorand Privilege

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the Presidentof the Academy for Sports Dentistry. I look to theupcoming year with excitement.

I would like to thank outgoing president, Dr. RickKnowlton, and the Board of Directors for their hardwork and dedication. In fact, all past presidents andboard members deserve our thanks. I hope tocontinue their tradition and serve in their spirit. Iwould also like to thank our executive director,Shelly Lott. She is, without a doubt, one of thegreatest assets this organization possesses.

It doesn’t seem possible that in 1983 I received asimple postcard from Jim Gallaman who was thesecretary/treasurer for a new organization calledthe Academy for Sports Dentistry. This societywas organized at a sports dentistry continuingeducation seminar at the University of Texas at SanAntonio Dental School, June 24-25, 1983. Theconstitution required charter member dentists topay an initiation fee of $25.00. In retrospect, the$25.00 was well spent. It was the initiative of thefirst president, william heintz, DDS, andpresident-elect william Goodwin, DDS, that gotthe ball rolling. Although many things may havechanged over time, the basic core values and goalsof the ASD have remained the same. It is a multi-disciplinary organization bringing individuals ofdifferent backgrounds together. we are able toshare experiences and knowledge regarding sportsdentistry and dental injuries to athletes.

As a young dentist in private practice, I knew thatI wanted sports dentistry/mouth guard fabricationto become part of my practice. I didn’t know whereto go until the Academy for Sports Dentistry was

founded. Over the years, ASD has providedguidance and support to dentists. I have beenguided by individuals who taught me the skills andgave me the confidence to provide custom mouthguards to my local high school for the past 25years. These mentors were serving high schools, colleges or professional sports teams with the goalto help each other become better sports dentists.

As we embark on the 31st year of ASD, we need toexpand upon many initiatives which have beenstarted.

WEBSITEwe have updated the website to help our membersbetter communicate with each other. Our newonline chat forum allows us to share information.

MENTOR PROGRAMAs new members become involved with theAcademy, they need guidance that will help thembecome better sports dentists. The team dentistcourse and Symposium provide valuable sources ofinformation. Moreover, to be able to work with amentor one on one is extremely helpful.

NATAwe are working to increase our visibility andcommunication with Athletic trainers.

USOCwe have continued to expand the USOlympic/ASD affiliation. There have been severalASD dentists who have provided services to ourUSA athletes, including custom pressuredlaminated mouth guards.

members, not just a few. we can do this bymaintaining our communication and support.

Sincerely,Robert howarth

Editor’s Message

wow! what a great symposium we had in SanDiego. As I reflect back on what I enjoyed mostabout San Diego it was seeing my “ASD family”again. I feel truly blessed to have been a part ofsuch an outstanding organization for the past 18years. The day after the symposium ends I startthinking about next year’s symposium. I trulyenjoy reconnecting with all my colleagues andmeeting new members as we expand “our family”.The lectures, exhibits and social events are alwaysvery good; however, it is all of you who make meso proud to be associated with the ASD.

I would like to send out a big thank you to theGeneral Chairman of the symposium, Dr. AndrewArriola as well as all his committee members. Ourannual symposium would not be possible if it wasnot for all our very generous and supportiveexhibitors and sponsors. A big thank you goes outto our Executive Director, Shelly Lott, who workstirelessly for the ASD, as well as her sister-in-law,Kristen Lott who helps out at the symposium. They always have a smile on their face and theyare a pleasure to work with.

I would also like to thank our spouses who eitheraccompany us to the symposium or who remain athome to look after our families. I truly appreciatethat my wife understands how important it is forme to go to the ASD symposium every year.

Dr. Rick Knowlton, our Past President, did a greatjob over the past year. Thank you for all the timeand sacrifice you spent over the past yeardedicated to the ASD. I have had the pleasure ofknowing our new president, Dr. Robert howarth, for over fifteen years. I have learned a lot from himand no doubt, with his knowledge and enthusiasm,he will make an outstanding president. he has“big shoes to fill” but I am confident that he will

make the ASD proud of him just like hispredecessors have done.

Congratulations to the 2014 ASD DistinguishedMember, Dr. Emilio Canal. No one is morededicated to the Academy than Dr. Canal. he hasmade numerous contributions over the years thathave enhanced the ASD. I have a soft spot in myheart for Emilio because he was the one who gotme involved with the ASD committees. In 1999,at the ASD symposium in Toronto, Canada, Emilioasked me to be the Canadian Liaison and thewebsite Coordinator. I am grateful to him andinspired by his love for the ASD.

As an ASD Fellow since 2006, I would like towelcome Dr. Robert Ogar and Dr. Brian Sachs intothe ASD Fellowship Program. Your fellowship isan indication of your dedication to the field ofSports Dentistry. Congratulations on yourachievement.

It was a pleasure to see and to meet so many newmembers. I am also always pleased to see so manyattendees from outside of Canada and the USA.we have true representation throughout the world. It is also nice to have so many non-dentists inattendance - athletic trainers, dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dental students. Thank youfor your support of the ASD.

If you have any suggestions for the newsletter orwebsite, or if you would like to contribute anarticle or photos, please feel free to contact me byemail at [email protected].

Lastly, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyedsocializing with so many of you. You are myinspiration to continue to support the ASD and theAnnual Symposium!

The Academy for Sports Dentistry Represented at Three Important Sports

Medicine and Dentistry Meetings The American Dental Association and its CouncilOn Access Prevention and InterprofessionalRelations (CAPIR) held a “Prevention Summit” onNovember 18-20, 2013 at the ADA headquartersin Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Leslie Rye, past presidentof ASD, participated as a co-presenter and resourceperson. This meeting represented a comingtogether of knowledgeable persons to develop anationwide approach to “prevention related oralhealth” and to formulate effective preventionprograms. Dr. Rye presented in the section onPrevention of Oro-facial injuries. This groupemphasized the need to work with communitygroups, athletic groups, and other groups withcommon objectives from the grass roots. Featuresof these efforts emphasized the need to keep theprograms simple and to develop a wide supportbase. Example programs suggested were sportsmouthguard programs to reduce athletic injuriesand hospital education programs to reduce falls inan aging population. A positive correlation wasdemonstrated in the reduction of orofacial injuriesin automobile accidents due to seatbelts andairbags.

Coincidentally, the National Athletic Trainer’sAssociation hosted The Fifth Annual Youth SportsSafety Alliance’s Sport Safety Summit inwashington, DC on March 10-12, 2014 alongmany of the same themes of prevention. Dr. Ryerepresented the ASD this year after Dr. EmilioCanal had performed this role for the previousthree years. This gives ASD the opportunity tonetwork with the many national organizations thatmake up the Alliance to focus on common goals ofsports safety.

There were many highlights during this three-dayevent, including:

• The wonderful opportunity for ASD to be seenand present itself to a wide variety oforganizations with common interest.

• Dr. Rye had the opportunity to speak to Dr.Dawn Comstock, associate professor, epidemiology, Colorado School of Publichealth at the University of Colorado, regarding data collection and sharing. If wehave members interested in research in thisarea, her group is a resource. we discussedhow data collection is limited and more ideasand resources are needed in this area. This is adoor we truly should keep open in the pursuitof evidence-based conclusions.

• Dr. Brian hainline has been appointed as achief medical officer in the NCAA. Dr.hainline stole the show with his concern anddedication for heath, safety and wellness of theathletes. he made it very clear that this is anNCAA priority.

See more about the 5th annual YSSA symposiumat the website: www.youthsportssafetyalliance.or/summits.

Finally, a first-of-its-kind meeting was held at theUniversity College London in London, UK onApril 4, 2014 titled “Oral health and Performancein Sport.” This event was based on informationgathered at the dental clinics of the 2014 LondonSummer Olympics which demonstrated awidespread and extreme need for routine dentalcare among participating athletes. The findingswere first published by Ian Needleman, PaulAshley and others in an article titled “Oral healthand impact on performance of athletesparticipating in the London 2012 Olympic Games:a cross-sectional study (Brit J Sports Me 2013:47.Pp1054-1058). The article led the two lead authorsto create the meeting to explore the connection ofthe oral health of elite athletes and their athleticperformance.

The one-day program featured ten differentspeakers with topics including an evidence-based

discussion of the oral health of elite athletes, thepsychosocial impact of oral health, inflammationand athletic performance and sports nutrition. Atthe conclusion of the formal presentations anaudience discussion was held followed by a grouppanel question and answer session. These wouldbe used to help formulate a symposium consensusstatement.

Dr. Leslie Rye, continuing her busy year in serviceto the ASD, and Dr. Steve Mills represented theAcademy for Sports Dentistry at the symposium.ASD has long supported pre-season oral healthscreening, overall oral health and athletic readinessto compete, but this meeting represents the firsteffort to try to connect oral health status withoverall athletic performance. An article on the

event can be seen at http://www.bbc.com/news/health-26885343.

Drs. Rye and Mills were graciously hosted by PeterFine of UCL who runs a yearlong course on sportsdentistry. This experience could and should lead tofuture collaboration between sports dentists ofboth the Academy and the UK to broaden theASD’s worldview of sports dentistry.

Attendance at all three of these meetings, alongwith the ongoing connection to the JointCommission of Sports Medicine, shows the highesteem in which ASD is held by the sportsmedicine world, both nationally andinternationally.
