How can you get your pool water to be crystal clear?Let’s start with what is most important. What are the impurities in the water? There are many of them. Water, as one of the basic requirements for life, is therefore unfortunately an ideal environment for the growth of all kinds of living organisms.

For this reason, we must fight against water contamination from bac-

teria, viruses, mold, yeast, algae and fungi. That sounds horrific,

but the methods to combat them are well known and effective. Over

the twenty years of its development activities, ASEKO has prepared

lots of products to combat contamination. To ensure your combat

readiness, you need to learn the basic principles of warfare.

Proper and effective treatment of pool water so that it is safe

and sparkling must include two basic chemical processes: disinfec-

tion and oxidation. Disinfection must also have what is called a re-

sidual effect, meaning that the effect of disinfection in the pool water

must last as long as possible. In other words, pool water treatment

must provide both immediate and long-term disinfection. A suffi-

ciently powerful oxidizing effect is needed to break down all organic

byproducts of the dead bacteria, algae, mold, yeast and viruses. The

basic principle of combat is always the same: kill (disinfect), burn (oxi-

dize) and prevent further spread (residual disinfection). Pool water

treatment therefore involves the use of such equipment as filtration

and machines for chemical treatment of water. There are also very

strict hygiene rules under Regulation No. 135/2004 Coll. for the physi-

cal and chemical requirements for pool water quality.

The regulation mandates the following basic physical requirements for pool water quality:

Free chlorine

0,3 – 0,5mg/l

temeperature

24 – 26°C

0,5 – 0,8mg/l do 32°C

0,7 – 1,0mg/l nad 32°C

> 770 ± 20 for pH 7,3 – 7,6

transparency clear look on the whole bottom

In order for the water in your pool to be clear and safe and to

satisfy hygiene requirements, it must be filtered and chemically

treated. The following procedures will ensure that the water in

your pool is of the highest quality.

Filtration:The pump draws water from the bottom through the outflow and

from the surface through the skimmer and spillways and forces it

by way of the circulation pump into the filter, where the water is

cleaned and then forced by nozzles back into the pool. The actual

filter contains sand for capturing insoluble water contaminants.

After a certain amount of time, filtering leads to clogging of the

sand, making it hard for the water to pass through. The sand must

therefore be rinsed by passing water through the filter in the op-

posite direction than during the filtration process. This stirs up the

sand and releases the contaminants caught by the sand. The wa-

ter is pumped in this way into the drain. To achieve maximum

filtration efficiency, replace the usual sand contents with spe-

cial ZEOGRAIN filter filler, which filters much more effectively

than sand.

Filtration equipment should be daily in operation long enough for

the entire volume of the pool to be filtered at least three times.

Therefore the filtration plantmust be fitted with a powerful

enough pump which should allow pumping the entire volume

of the pool through the filter in ca. 3 to 4 hours. This means that

with a pool volume of 30 m3 the pump should have an output

of 10 m3 per hour. Without proper chemical treatment, however,

filtration by itself will not ensure the desired water parameters.

Closely related to filtration is the term flocculation:

Making your water clear by flocculation:By flocculation, even the tiniest particles of contaminants that

cause a slight cloudiness are made to clump together into bigger

particles that are caught in the filter of your cleaner. This results in

absolutely sparkling, clear water. Flocculants are usually solutions

of aluminum sulfate or the more modern polyaluminium chloride.

The use of fl occulants greatly improves water quality and trans-

parency. Use of fl occulants, however, requires skill and caution.

Too large dosages or too frequent use can result in cloudiness.

For home pools and whirlpool baths, we recommend using PURE

WATER liquids for lowering pH with a fl occulation ingredient or

occasional (e.g. once per week) use of a fl occulant. Afterwards, the

fi ltration system must run for at least 3 hours. Then the fi ltration

system must be fl ushed out.

adjusting the ph level (acidity):The pH level is important for ensuring the disinfectants will work

properly, and it also has a major impact on keeping the water from

irritating your skin. It aff ects the corrosiveness of the water. The

pH level expresses whether water is acidic or basic on a scale of

0 – 14. A pH level of 0 – 7 shows acidity, while a pH of 7 – 14 shows

basicity. Pool water should have a pH level between 6.5 and

7.6. Water with a pH level in that range it gentle on your skin and

allows disinfectants to work adequately. The pH level of pool wa-

ter usually needs to be lowered, because dosing of disinfectants

raises the pH level, so the treatment liquids most frequently used

are labeled as pH-. They are usually strong acids. Treatment to raise

the pH level is less frequent, usually occurring with outdoor pools

treated with acidic chemicals or pools treated with chlorine gas.

The treatment products used for this purpose are labeled pH+. The

pH level of water is infl uenced by several factors, and regulating it

to the desired level is nearly impossible without using automatic

regulators. ASEKO off ers several dosing machines with the trade-

mark ASIN Aqua. These machines regulate the water’s pH level.

Their measuring electrode continually measures the pH level and

a regulator evaluates the quantity of correction liquid injected by

the dosing pump into the water, thus keeping the pH level at the

desired value. The proper pH should vary ideally within the range

of 6.5 –7.6 depending on the type of disinfectant used.

Disinfection of water:The most important part of the entire pool water treatment proc-

ess is disinfection. Disinfection ensures that such pathogenic or-

ganisms as bacteria, viruses, mold, yeast, fungi and algae do not

grow in the water, prevents cloudiness and keeps the water spar-

kling. The ideal pool water disinfectant must incorporate both bio-

cidal (liquidation of all microorganisms) and oxidational processes

(liquidation of protein structures and cloudiness). Another im-

portant property is its residual eff ect (after dosing, the protecting

concentration must last for a certain period in the entire volume of

the pool). Exact dosing of disinfectant agents keeps the water safe

while avoiding odors or aggressive eff ects on your body.

5

6

Chlorine disinfectantsThe most eff ective and most common disinfectant used to treat pool water is chlorine. Chlorine has been in use as a water disinfectant for 100 years. Over that time period, its eff ects and usefulness have become very well known. It has the advantage of combining disinfection with oxidation eff ects with a residual character.

Using chlorine satisfi es existing legislative requirements.

Chlorine chemicals are the most aff ordable.

The analytical methods for chorine

treatment are very advanced.

The behavior of chorine in water works well

with the regulating mechanism.

what is free chlorine? The term free chorine refers to the total concen-

tration of the following chorine compounds: hy-

pochlorites, hypochlorous acid and molecular

chlorine. Of these, hypochlorous acid HOCl and

molecular chlorine have the strongest disinfectant

properties. The free chorine content of pool water

must vary within the range of 0.3 – 1.5 mg / liter

depending on water temperature. Countries with

hot climates permit concentrations of up to 3 mg/

liter. With declining pH level, the disinfectant eff ect

increases, but the decomposition of chorine compounds also ac-

celerates, thereby increasing consumption.

what is bound chlorine? This term refers to chlorine compounds bound to organic com-

pounds. Chloramines are the most common form of bound chlo-

rine and are the most frequent cause of the typical pool odor. Most

bound chlorine compounds are toxic irritants, so the quantity of

bound chlorine must be monitored carefully. The hygiene limit for

bound chlorine content is 0.3 mg/liter. The easiest way to get rid

of bound chlorine is by regular superchlorination using the prod-

uct SUPERCHLOR, a fast-dissolving form of calcium hypochlo-

rite. After application, there is a temporary extreme increase to

the chlorine concentration in the water, but at the same time the

bound chlorine is completely removed. Another way to limit the

formation of bound chlorine is by installing supporting equip-

ments such as ozonization or UV lamps.

ozonization:Ozonization is unbeatable for its very strong oxidizing and disin-

fectant eff ects. Ozone is a really deadly weapon against anything

living in water. Ozone both kills and oxidizes everything it comes

in contact with. The problem, however, arises when we consider

the residual eff ect of this water treatment

method. Ozone is so extremely reactive that

it has virtually no long-term eff ect. This fact

prevents the use of ozone alone as a disinfect-

ant, so ozone is used as a disinfectant only in

combination with chlorine. This combination

is advantageous in several ways. By its strong

oxidizing eff ect, ozone liquidates organic

contaminants that lead to the formation of

bound chlorine while also breaking down al-

ready formed bound chorine!

Chorine doses then cannot for the most part react with bound

chlorine, and chorine is added to the water only for long-lasting

disinfection. Since the concentration of ozone in pool water is by

law strongly limited, pool water treatment technology must in-

clude an activated charcoal fi lter after the ozonization stage. The

fi lter serves two purposes: it gets rid of surplus ozone and it cap-

tures the remnants of organic impurities. So ozonization is great,

but it is unusable without chlorine.

uv lamps:The UV radiation produced by these lamps disinfects water as reli-

ably as ozone does. You just have to make sure that the installed

lamp is of the right kind and is powerful enough for the quantity

of water passing through. As with ozonization, a disadvantage of

UV lamps is that their disinfectant eff ect is only local. The water is

disinfected where it comes into contact with the radiation, but this

does not prevent further microbiological contamination and sub-

sequent growth of microorganisms. The powerful energy of the

radiation reliably kills microorganisms at the application site and

hot climates permit concentrations of up to 3 mg/

7

even breaks down organic compounds and bound chlorine. So

the application of UV radiation for pool water treatment in combi-

nation with the use of chlorine limits the negative side eff ects of

chlorination: chlorine odor and irritation of the eyes and mucous

membranes. For UV lamps to work properly, they must be cleaned

and replaced regularly, because as they age they very quickly lose

their eff ectiveness.

Methods of chlorine disinfection:Chlorine may be added to water in several ways. The most com-

mon method for small pools is direct dosing of chlorine disinfect-

ant containing the active ingredient sodium hypochlorite. A dos-

ing pump is used to supply the chemical. Peristaltic pumps (pumps

with hoses) are suitable for smaller pools, while membrane pumps

are for dosing larger quantities of chlorine. There is increasing use

of a chorine disinfection system that obtains chlorine by electrol-

ysis of table salt (NaCl). The salt is dissolved in the pool water,

and when the saltwater comes in contact with the electrolysis

electrodes, chlorine is released into the water. Many owners of this

equipment incorrectly assume that this disinfection method re-

quires no regulation. The result is the same as if one were to pour

chlorine disinfectant into a pool just by guesswork. Dosing with

chorine gas is still used for large pools, as that is the cheapest of

all sources of chlorine.

Electrolyzed salt waterSome suppliers of this technology claim that it provides chlorine-free water disinfection, but that claim is deceptive. As most of you know, the chemical name for table salt is sodium chloride. As the name indicates, chlorine is present in salt!

And the electrolysis of salt, i.e. sodium chloride, generates the chlorine

ion in the water, and that amounts to exactly the same thing as free

chlorine that is present in the water when dosing with any chlorine

agent. Compared with dosing of chlorine products, this method has

a major advantage. The fl ow of water around the electrodes where

the chlorine is released leads to the breaking down of all bound

chlorine compounds. And as we have already said, bound chlorine

is what causes odor and irritation. This means this is practically the

ideal method. It works like a combination of dosing chlorine products

and UV lamps. Another advantage of this method is the positive ef-

fect of saltwater on the skin. Somewhat of a problem with using this

technology is that salt water is corrosive. This problem, however, can

be eliminated through the choice of materials and equipment that

are resistant to saltwater.

SANOSIL chlorine-free disinfectant drinking water in your poolThe most eff ective pool disinfectant on the market. No odor, no irritation.

SANOSIL makes use of the synergic eff ect of its two basic com-

ponents. Hydrogen peroxide, which acts as the product’s oxi-

dation component, and colloid silver, which provides broad

spectrum disinfection of pool water. The result is worth it.

SANOSIL is broadly eff ective against bacteria, viruses, fun-

gus and mold. The combined eff ect of oxidation and oligo-

dynamic silver creates a two-phase product that, unlike other

disinfectant products, is able to destroy biofi lms. This is a very

important process for destroying viruses and bacteria that create

so-called biofi lms. The oxygen released from hydrogen peroxide

destroys the biofi lm, letting the silver destroy bacteria or viruses

without any barriers.

COLLOID SILVER is a perfect, natural, non-toxic, safe agent

against bacteria, viruses, mold and single-celled parasites, and

it has no side eff ects. While colloid silver only kills single-celled

organisms, not multicellular organisms, it still is no friend of

multicellular organisms, either. Luckily for us, single-celled mi-

crobes make up over 97% of all such species. These include the

microbes causing 670 classifi ed diseases listed by the World

Health Organzation. The long list includes cocci bacteria, ente-

rococcus, micrococcus, streptococcus, staphylococcus, sto-

matococcus, pneumococcus, meningococcus, bacteriodes,

neisseria, helicobacter pylori, clostritida, Escherichia coli

and other coliforms, salmonellae, Bacillus aurelus and other

bacilli, viruses including HIV, herpes and fl u, fungi, mold,

candida, giardia, trichomonas etc.

For automatic dosing of SANOSIL disinfectant, Aseko manu-

factures ASIN Aqua SANOSIL. This equipment doses a preset

quantity of SANOSIL per hour. You use a tester to determine the

concentration of SANOSIL in the water once a week. You then in-

crease or decrease the hourly dosage so that the concentration in

the water varies at between ca. 20 to 40 mg/liter. Overdosing is

not harmful to health. SANOSIL is eff ective long after dosing

is completed. This property is especially advantageous for home

pools, where pool operation is frequently interrupted.
