Imposition of Ashes and Holy Eucharist at 5 pm in the Chapel
Dear People of All Saints,
December has moved into January and I continue to
be immensely thankful for all the assistance you
have so generously offered to me since my
December 10 accident. It has been a fascinating
process to go through and I thank you for your
patience, love and assistance as I have journeyed
through the healing.
I find that as I have reached a point of an
ever-increasing range of motion exercises, the
limitations on my hand have become magnified as
has some of the pain. Muscles, unused for seven
weeks, are beginning to be used again.
So I must ask your forbearance this month, as I turn
over some of my healing to the therapist and the
oversight and comfort of our Lord. In order to
preach and type sermons, teach Bible Study and
develop lesson plans, I find I need at this time to cut
back on some of my typing on your behalf because
of the pain involved.
Message from the Rector
I have learned so much in my
awareness of my respect for
limitations, both my own and
those of others. Mostly I have
dug deeply into knowing
when to step back in some
ways and begin to increase in
others.
Because several of you are generous with rides, I
am more able to visit and take communion to those
who need it. That brings with it a need for balance
as my capabilities increase. What is that term? No
pain. No gain. WOW!! I definitely know what
that means now as so many muscles are waking up.
I expect my note will be back full force for the
March newsletter and I even hope to be driving
once again, but I am studiously awaiting doctor and
therapist approval.
Thank you all so much for your patience.
Thank you all so much for your care.
In Christ’s love,
Holladay+
On Saturday, March 10, we will have a special presentation from
9 am - 2 pm by Ron Bramann. Ron is Senior Warden at Good
Shepherd at Fort Hall on the Shoshone-Bannock
Reservation. Ron is deeply involved in the Episcopal Church's
focus on Native American ministries.
At our last several diocesan conventions, he has brought an
exhibit table on the Doctrine of Discovery. This diocese has a
grant for Ron and others to travel around the diocese to teach us
about that doctrine and what it has meant for this country since
1492.
You will recall that 1492 was when Columbus "discovered"
America while at the same time there were innumerable
civilizations populating both North and South America.
Come and hear. Come and learn. As more details develop, they
will be publicized. For now, SAVE THE DATE!!!

Financial Picture of the Parish
All Funds December 2017 YTD Budget YTD
Pledges $ 177,288.00 $ 177,288.00 $ 183,360.00
Receipts $ 267,194.26 $ 267,194.26 $ 252,730.00
Expense $ 245,132.36 $ 245,132.36 $ 273,215.12
Operating Income $ 192,029.72 $ 192,029.72 $ 200,560.00
Operating Expense $ 191,486.36 $ 191,486.36 $ 197,970.12
Net Surplus (Deficit) $ 22,061.90 $ 22,061.90 $ (20,485.12)
Pledges were $6000 under the amount pledged.
The 22,061.90 surplus is the product of the income of roof repair funds from grants and
fundraisers.
The deficit of $20,485.12 is present because no funds were budgeted for the $19.700
roof repair.
The roof repair was accomplished in December 2017. The bill was paid in January
2018, so that amount of $19,700 paid will necessarily be reflected in the 2018
financial statements.
Fund raising for the year beyond the amount raised for the roof neared the $6,000 budgeted for 2017.
The loan has been reduced by $5,526 to $127,374. It should be reduced by about $11,000 more in 2018
Thank you again for your support of the ministries of All Saints.
FRIENDSHIP Meal
The next Friendship Meal will be February 2.
The March food truck delivery is scheduled for
February 26.
We will be serving chicken cacciatore, egg
noodles, and a vegetable to be decided! I
would really appreciate donations of wide egg
noodles, as many packages as possible!
For the Friendship Meal, volunteers are needed
at 3:00 to cook (I'll do the shopping and will
have the recipes). Cooks are finished by 6:00
at the latest. Servers/clean up are needed at
5:30. They serve the meal, wash and put away
dishes, and clean up the Parish Hall. Usually
they are done by 7:30-7:45.
One of the most important ministries for the
meal is what I call the "ministry of
presence". At 5:30 volunteers are welcome to
come and visit with our guests and eat
dinner. In sharing this meal together the walls
between self and other are dismantled, if only for a
few minutes, and Christ's love shines forth. I really
thank everyone at All Saints for their support of this
ministry. It is in serving the poor and hungry that we
are serving Christ.
Volunteers are needed for the food truck delivery
later in the month on Monday, February 26th at
5:30 pm. If you are not able to unload the truck,
please come and help sort through the food to get rid
of items that are way past expiration. We meet at
5:30 and with lots of help, are through by 6:30 or
7:00.
These moments are an opportunity for formation, for sanctification. Underneath these overreactions and
aggravations lie true fears. My lost keys reveal my anxiety that I won’t be able to do what I need to do to
take care of myself and those around me. They hit on my fear of failure and incompetency. My broken
dishwasher uncovers my worries about money – will we have enough to fix it? And it exposes my
idolatry of ease, my false hope in comfort and convenience – I just want things to run smoothly.
Today my lost keys provide a moment of revelation, revealing, the lostness inside me and my misplaced
reliance.

Intergenerational Soup and Study
On Wednesday evenings during Lent, we will
share a meal and intergenerational study of Bolt,
an animated film about a dog who thinks he is a
superhero. Through a series of mishaps he
becomes separated from his beloved owner whom
he has been trained to save. As he tries to make
his way back to her, he
discovers many new
things about relationships,
love, truth, reality, and the
nature of a “superhero.”
Soup will be shared in the
Parish Hall and will be
followed by a segment of
the movie and activities
emphasizing the segment
of that evening. Sign-ups
for soup and bread will be
in the narthex. The
evenings to share are Feb 21, 28, March 7, 14, and
21. See you there!!
At 10 am on the Wednesdays of Lent from Feb
21 – March 21, we will have an opportunity to
focus on the spiritual practices in everyday life.
The guiding text is liturgy of the ordinary:
sacred practices in everyday life. Purchase of
the text is not required; handouts will be
available for group reflection. Topics include
the exploration of spiritual practices even as we
engage in the mundane, such as brushing our
teeth, lose our keys, check email, get stuck in
traffic, call a friend and so forth. Sessions will
last an hour. All are welcome.
Lenten Wednesday Morning Reflections
Celtic Eucharist
Our final Epiphany Celtic Eucharist celebrates the closing of the season of the Light as we
anticipate Lent and our changing focus toward Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. We are at the
turning of the seasons as we bid farewell to the Alleluias and move into our Lenten
solemnity on Feb. 14. The Celtic Eucharist will be celebrated in the Parish Hall on
Sunday, February 11, at 5:30 pm.
The February selection for the Book Club is Smoke Gets in Y our Eyes
&Other Lessons from the Crematoryby Caitlin Doughty. This “morbidly
funny” book is a millennial memoir by a medieval history major who
“took a job in a crematory and turned a fascination with death into her
life’s work.” She explores society’s view of death and how our culture
treats the dead. The Sunday Times call this book “upbeat, brave and
brilliantly, morbidly curious…Her measure of society is fierce, right on,
and radical.” The book is available at: amazon.com for book/Kindle
$9.71/$9.22 and from barnesandnoble.com at $10.22/$9.99.
The March offering is The Man Who Met God in a Bar by Robert Farrar Capon. Capon was an Episcopal
priest, author and chef who died in 2013. His theological writings have been highly accessible and this book is
as well. His widow recently released this “imaginative retelling of the Jesus’ ministry and resurrection,
making it a fitting book for Book Club during the season of Lent. The book is available at: amazon.com for
book/Kindle $12.99/$8.99 and from barnesandnoble.com at $12.99/NA.

Parish Life
Shrove Pancake Supper is February 13. Bob
Ruth is in charge of the volunteers. Please
contact him if you can help. Thanks!
In the church calendar we learn the rhythm of life
through narrative. Every week we reenact God’s
creative work and rest. Every year we retell the
story of Jesus. Advent, Christmas, Epiphany: the
story of God’s people longing for a Messiah,
Christ’s birth, and then, slowly, his revelation as
King to all the world. Lent, Easter, suffering death,
resurrection, and then the coming of the Holy Spirit
and the birth of the church….. And in liturgical
time, we make space – lots of space – for waiting.
When we practice the Sabbath, we not only look
back to God’s rest after [the] work of creation but
we look forward to the rest ahead, to the Sabbath to
come when God will complete [the] work of
recreation. We recall together that we are waiting
for the end of the story, for all things to be made
new.

The Search Team Highlights
Great news! Story-gathering has been completed and
the data was compiled at the January Search Team
meeting. Thanks to all for participating and for being
so honest and candid. It was a pleasure to talk to each
of you and hear your inspiring stories.
In the near future we will be engaging in a history-
taking activity. This is not a linear time-line but rather
a history of All Saints and the community told through
your stories and remembrances. We will accomplish
this at a single meeting the entire parish will be invited
to attend. The date will be announced shortly.
Next month we will begin writing the profile for All
Saints. This document will be the story of our parish
and will tell the reader who we are, where we live, and
how we serve God.
Respectfully submitted,
All Saints Search Team
As you prepare for the coming
year, please pray about the
possibility of taking on a new
ministry. Are you called to serve on the Vestry for three years? There are a few slots open for election at
the Annual Meeting. Speak to a Vestry Member if you feel so called.
Are you called to be a Eucharistic Minister? Eucharistic Visitor? Lector? Worship Leader? Your call
could be to one of those Worship Ministries but it could also be to engage in ministries away from the
altar but no less important. Are you called to care for the building and grounds? To assist with Social
Justice projects? The Friendship Meal? Please speak to Holladay or someone involved in one of these
ministries if you have questions about them. May your New Year be bright with new life and great
promise.
Prayer for Transition
Almighty and everlasting God, grant
to us, your humble servants, calm
hearts and steadfast faith during our
journey to call a new priest. Calm
our fears and anxieties, and guide the
search team in the discernment
process. We ask this in the name of
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen
New Year Ministries?
When the day is lovely and sunny and everything
is going according to plan, I can look like a pretty good person.
But little things gone wrong and interrupted plans reveal who I really am;
my cracks show and I see that I am profoundly in need of grace.
But here’s the thing: pretty good people do not need Jesus. He came for the lost. He came
for the broken. In his love for us he came to usher us into his foundness and wholeness.
