Introduction:

Society for Education and Action – SEA is a Not-for Profit,Non -Governmental,Non-Political / Non-religious, registered charitable Society registered under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act of 1976. It has also registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of 1975 with the Government of India. SEA is also exempted from Income Tax under section 80 - G of Income Tax Act. SEA is located at Mamallapuram in Kancheepuram District,Tamilnadu state.SEA works at 32 villages in an around of the East Coast Road (ECR) among fishermen and Dalit salt pan workers and their children. SEA was founded by like-minded community development workers and village youth’s, who were dedicated in order to view a society without discrimination of caste, creed, religion and economic status.

Mr.Desingu is the founder and Executive Director of the Organization, he is from the 11th generation of the fishermen community and instrumental in mobilizing community for sustainable development. SEA was founded during the year 2000 and from there on initiated intervention among the fishermen and dalit salt pan workers.

For the past 16 years we were working in the East Coast Road (ECR) from Kovalam to Kadapakkam among the fishermen and dalit communities – specifically with children and women. Our major activities are on Education, Rights, Health and Economic development of this community especially for women and Children.

All the targeted villages where SEA works are very much cared by the Organization. Our key interest area lays in Child Rights, Child Education ,Child Welfare and Health. After the Black Sunday -Tsunami 2004 washed out the coastal habitats of Kancheepuram District,Tamilnadu, thousands of persons were left homeless and orphans.SEA quickly acted at that time and continued after that also, by taking care of the people with motherhood, provided food and shelter and basic needs and nurtured them for a week together and provided livelihood support. We took at-most care and worked hard and strained a lot to stabilize their life, and that provided the desired results. Not only the people but also other agencies, government, private organizations, individual philanthropists and general people appreciated our services.

Tools used for Enrollment Campaign: Enrollment Rally. Door to Door Campaign Pamphlets

Enrollment campaign: The enrollment rally was organized for the children and by the children. School Children’s were involved in these activities in order to bring sustainability of regular enrollment and

Reduce drop-outs.The student’s (children) of the concerned schools took part in the rally to stress the importance and spread importance of education at the right age.

Among the six villages there are five schools, where children from the six villages study. So for a campaign in a village, only the children of the village were selected. Since the activity involved children, SEA arranged safety measures for the campaign. The mentoring staffs checked and arranged help for any of the children who were not wearing proper clothes or footwear. The children’s actively participated in the enrollment rally and the raised slogans to propagate the importance of enrollment at the right age. Door to Door Campaign:

Along with the enrollment rally simultaneously door to door campaign and cultural yathra were also done in the specified villages on the same date. This strategy was mainly adapted to intensify the focus on the enrollment by doing it in a stretch rather than doing it one by one. This implied better coherence of the activities in the campaign which gave good reach covering the whole village.Impact:

The enrollment campaign combined with other activities made a great impact in school enrollment at the correct age of 5 years. It created awareness among parents to enroll their children’s in school once they complete 5 years of age. Since the street plays and songs reflected the local issues that obstruct the education in the village, they could address the issues of the locality as well as the right to education. When they address the issues of locale, belongingness towards the activity as well as the community is created. The street play brings the message in an effective way as it lets one imagine that it happens at their home. They feel as if their own child speaks to them about this. Hence, it really raised questions on the responsibility of the parents, so it brought a positive change in the mindset of the parents to make them enroll their children at the right age (5 years completed).

Beneficiaries:In our data there are 364 people were benefited by the campaign. Among them 92 children were enrolled in the school. Through door-to-door campaign 196 families were benefited. We had enrolled 92 children through enrollment campaign by schools No Name of the School & Village Boy

Challenges:-The children’s enthusiastically participated in the activities but had worked for long hours since all the activities concluded in a single day.The motivation staff trained the children systematically and prepared for the street plays and folk songs. It was also hard to conduct door to door campaign as not every family was happy with their doors being knocked for awareness imparting after long hours of street plays and awareness on education. Inspite of the challenges the desired result of the activity was achieved.

Learning:-In all the activities, enrollment rally, door to door campaign and plays,Involvement of children created a mutual belongingness between the children and the activities and hence it paved way for the sustainability.

Motivation center: The main idea behind the motivation center is to identify the potential drop outs and support them in their education. Children usually drop out from school when they lose interest intheir studies or when they are detained in a class. So they should gain interest in their studies and also they should study better. The children are poor in academics because they don’t reinforce what is taught in the school. This is because the parents give household work to

Society for Education and Action Activity Report 2016– 2017

them when they come back from school. So there is a necessity of a center that helps to reinforce the academic knowledge of the children. There is one motivation center in each of the six villages. After the school hours children come and study there. The mentoring staffs pay special attention to each of the children, thus facilitating them to obtain better result. This reduces the vulnerability of the children to drop out of schools. The staff went for home visits and visited the parents of the children and got feedback on the progress of the children in education and also collected feedback about the usefulness of the center and the ways to improve the mentoring center. Each staff went for home visits four times during each month. The motivation centre’s successfully brings changes and help the children’s and parents to understand the importance of regular education.

Impact: The children were able to get good academic knowledge. They were able to act and study better and their parents also become concerned with their children’s education and future. The number of childrens benefitted in the motivational centres are – 166,this year.Break up of children benefitted in the motivational centres for the year :2016-2017:No Name of the motivation

3. Strengthening Parent Teachers (PTA) Association and Village Education Committee (VEC):The Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and Village Education Commities are very important for the children’s education. So some of them which were non functional and not existent were reorganized and strengthened through meetings with the parents. The high dropout ratio could be reduced only by working with the parents and make them aware of the responsibilities an involving them in the school activities and monitoring the education of the children. Hence, meetings for the parents are arranged separately.

Resource persons specialized in education, child rights and child health and care were arranged to address the parents to prepare them to participate in the school activities. The parents were sensitized about the necessity of education and were stressed to participate in the school activities, including the meetings with the school teachers. The wellbeing of the children is also discussed. So it acts as a supportive activity that reinforces the other activities focused at the children.

For the current year three meetings were conducted, in which representatives from each of the six villages attended. The responsibility of mobilizing the parents and arranging the meetings at the specified places were taken by the motivation staffs of the respective villages. Issues like corporal punishments, equal education and sexual abuse case at village were also discussed.

The target people could understand the fact that their involvement in school activities can improve the standards of the schools in all aspects. When they speak

Project Review Meetings and Evaluation:The project review meetings are being conducted every month during the last week. The monthly achievements, learning, changes and challenges are shared by every staff individually to the Project co-ordinator. The staffs also share special cases and their current attention. The staffs should also mention how the trainings contribute to their activity. The areas of their improvement due to the training are evaluated. The needs for training are also identified through this meeting. Based on the needs identified by the individuals and also the chief functionary, the themes of the capacity building are finalized and modules are prepared and handed over to the apt resource persons. The dates for the capacity building programme are also fixed according to the convenience of the staff stated by them.

Monthly reports are collected from the staff. There is a special template given to all the staffs in SEA to write their monthly reports. It is designed to get the maximum information out of them. Performance of the staffs is evaluated, according to the comments the field staff going for visits. The success stories are also appreciated and their performance is also evaluated with this also. Issues in the field were sorted out through collective discussion. The records, reports and registers were verified and analyzed and the performance was measured. The individual performance of the field staffs is also analyzed and the challenges they face in the field are also got as feedback and the way to tackle them are discussed. Hence the monthly review meeting acts as a multi-dimensional meeting, where reporting, follows, sharing of learning, challenges and changes occur.

We realize the strength that we have from various directions but it was very much possible with the support from the local community. Being a locally founded, locally managed and locally operated Organisation we were able to achieve all our goals. We specially thank all our donors and individuals who have contributed their time, recources and energy to all our attempts.

Thank you….!

Our succeeded giant step:

Kadalur Periakuppam Primary School – is now being run by the community itself:

SEA has been supporting primary schools by providing teachers for the past 11 years. As a key result of our effort towards sustainability of the running of schools, the Kadalur Periakuppam Primary School has been handed over to the community last year. Now the community is handling the school by itself with support from SEA.The community is being provided continuous support to run the school. In view of bringing the school upgraded it brought English medium from last year which was segregated among classes, has been successfully implemented by which the impact is the school dropout has reduced very much and literacy level becoming higher and higher. Our newly adopted Kodur village ( Govt high school ) is functioning very well. SEA’s enthusiastic social work has provoked the panchayaths and enhanced the village which remember’s the universal quote - to help the people to help themselves.
