All Saints Church News Dear Friends,
In June we are half way through the year. I cannot believe that it is
nearly six months since Christmas. We are now working through the joy
of Easter in the Christian year and soon the countdown to Christmas
2014 will begin! Christmas and Easter are the great Christian Festivals
and also the great holidays in this country, but there are some other
important Christian Festivals and a couple of them are in June this year
because Easter was so late in April.
I expect everyone knows that the word holiday derives from holy day.
In the Middle Ages holy days were the only holidays that people could
have.
When I was a child, and indeed up to 1971, when I was more than a
child, there was a public holiday in this country which was called the
Whitsun Holiday. It happened in the Seventh Week after Easter. The
Sunday was Whit Sunday or Pentecost and the following Monday was
a bank holiday. The whole of the following week was usually half term
for school staff and students. Nowadays this holiday has been fixed
and Bank holiday Monday is always the last Monday in May.
This year, because Easter occurred late in April, the Church will
celebrate Pentecost on 8th June. At Pentecost, the church remembers
the coming of the Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus. Pentecost is
considered to be the birthday of the Church. The Holy Trinity is now
complete. It is good to mark the occasion of a birthday and having a
holiday is a good way to do that. The holiday this year is before
Pentecost, but it is still good to have a holiday.
The second Festival of the Church in June this year is Trinity Sunday.
This is on 15th June this year and it is when, after the coming of the Holy
Spirit at Pentecost, the Church celebrates God: Father, Son and Holy
Spirit. There is no holiday associated with this celebration, but we can
almost begin the countdown to Christmas again, with its holiday and
joyful celebrations.
As we move into the holiday season, enjoy your holidays and the rest,
and relaxation they bring.
Ann Cattermole, Reader in the Polden Wheel Benefice.
