Your speaker today is Danny Wells - Cook’s Tours
TOM JONES AT TOLETHORPE HALL
Mike Allen of Mansfield U3A will be taking a group to see Tom Jones – a play of the novel by Henry Fielding, not the singer!
The trip will be on Tuesday July 14th at Tolethorpe Hall, Stamford at 7.45pm.
The cost is £24 and this includes the Community bus fare & tip. We leave the Mansfield Odeon Car Park at 5.00pm.
It’s a ‘Bring your own picnic’ play – sit in the grounds on the chair you’ve brought, eat your fill of the food you’ve taken along, drink deeply of the wine, then go under the sweeping roof to watch a bawdy, fun production in the open air. We don’t get wet, ever; the actors might!
There are a few seats remaining, so if this excites your mind (!), phone Mike Allen on 01623 653345 to enquire further & reserve a place.

LINE DANCING May’s meeting of line-dancers went very well although our numbers were down a little. Gaye, who works very hard to make us into dancers, is taking a well deserved holiday, so has found us a stand in for our June meeting. He is a very nice man by the name of Paul Chapman who very kindly came today to meet us and I hope we can all make an effort to show him our support. I thought that would be better than cancelling our meeting Our next meeting will be on June18th at St Wilfred’s Hall Kirkby, hope to see you all then. Rita

ENJOYING SHAKESPEARE GROUP
On May 6th we had a wonderful trip to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London to see an afternoon performance of The Merchant of Venice. The 15 U3A members making up the party opted for seats under cover and to one side of the stage, rather than standing with the “groundlings”. It was a superb production, with a top professional cast, including Jonathan Pryce as Shylock. For most of us it was the first performance we'd seen at the Globe, but we plan to ensure that it won't be the last. On June 20th we have a return visit to the Shakespeare Theatre at Stamford, to see Henry V: an afternoon performance, transport there and back by mini-bus, bring a picnic lunch. There may be one or two places available, so if you’re interested please contact our presenter Ann Walter (phone 07864 291123, email ([email protected]), who is running the outing. In November we’re planning another return visit - of Julie Colley, the actress tutor, to give a workshop on Twelfth Night. Meanwhile, our growing group watches DVDs of documentaries on the Bard’s life and times and, of course, excerpts from his plays. We meet on the third Thursday of the month in the Ashwood Centre activity room, from 2 to 4 pm. If this you think this sounds like ‘your thing’ do come along and give it a try. You’ll be very welcome.

UPDATE ON GARDEN GROUP ACTIVITIES:
On Friday 24th April members of the Garden Group travelled to the Harrogate Spring Show, an annual event of the northern gardening calendar. We could not have chosen better weather for a day out, wall to wall sunshine all day. We arrived shortly after the gates had opened. There were so many outdoor exhibitors it was difficult to choose what to investigate first. Some members chose to visit the indoor trade displays first before the coach loads of other enthusiasts arrived as it can get very busy within the covered areas. The inside exhibits were stunning whatever your favourite plants, all were on display. The work that is put into bringing on the various flowers and vegetables out of season is truly remarkable and a credit to the dedication of the horticultural trade. The weather allowed us to take lunch outside and take advantage of the sunshine. By about 2.30 p.m our footsore members decided it was time to head for home laden with purchases of plants and other garden accessories. It was a good day for the Ice Cream vendors with some members making more than one purchase. The consensus was that we had enjoyed a great day out. In June, members are looking forward to visiting Taylors Clematis Nursery in South Yorkshire to have a guided tour of the Nursery. Chris Blaiklock.

FALMOUTH DIARY
39 Members from Hucknall, Ashfield, Sutton and Ravenshead U3A had a wonderful week in Falmouth recently. As it was such a large group we had our own dedicated bus and driver and enjoyed a smooth run down to the south coast. Arriving at the Maderia Hotel set on the front - many rooms had wonderful sea views and balconies.
Sunday, our first excursion was to the pretty town of St Ives, where we enjoyed browsing the shops and watching the world go by in the picturesque harbour eating fish and chips! Monday Padstow some of us watched, fascinated, a man setting up his busking act of Frank Sinatra classics. We visited the Chough bakery as featured on TV with Alex Polezzi, and sampled their award winning Cornish pasties – they were wonderful!! It turned windy and rainy so we boarded the bus and back to the hotel by 3.30pm.
Tuesday Free day bus dropped us in Falmouth, and we had a boat trip on the Falmouth estuary, down the river Fal in a force 9 gale! Some of the party were a bit queasy during the trip, but most thoroughly enjoyed the 2 ¼ hour trip. Disembarked and toured the multitude of charity shops in Falmouth. Some got some real bargains.
Wednesday free day so 8 members visited the Trebah gardens on Jill’s recommendation. These wonderful gardens have won the ‘best in Falmouth’ award for many years, and it is quite obvious why. The rhododendrons and azaleas were in full bloom, as was the huge Davidia tree, and many many more beautiful shrubs, bulbs and perennials. We then had lunch at the excellent restaurant in the reception, browsed the plants for sale and ordered our taxi for Falmouth Thursday The Lizard and Lambards. What a great day!
Friday what a busy last day! Morning and lunch in historic Truro with the choice of shop till you drop or visit the fabulous cathedral. Others used their bus pass to visit Helston and see the famous Floral Dance day.
In the evening 12 of our party booked to see an amateur production of the macabre play ’Dinner’ at the local Poly theatre. A great finale to a wonderful week.
The Maderia Hotel - all rooms were on suite in a very good location and there was some form of entertainment most evenings. One evening there was a quiz, and a team of our members won it. There was Bingo on some evenings for those who like the game.
The food choice was excellent and the chef was only too pleased to accommodate those with special dietary requirements. It was great to see so many people get together and form new friendships - truly the spirit of the U3A!

No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for,
unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at
the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.
