Pluralism and Polarization: Cultural Dynamicsof Extremism and RadicalizationRecent years have seen an increase in ideologicalextremism in many countries around the world. There iswidespread concern about increasing levels of politically orreligiously motivated violence. In some cases, this involvesa deliberate process of radicalization and recruitmentdesigned to attract youth to join ongoing conflicts or carryout destructive acts in their regions. In other cases, individuals who are socially marginalized or struggling withmental health problems are impelled toward violence byimages and ideologies circulating through popular or socialmedia. Efforts are underway in many countries to addressthe problem of radicalization to violence. Some haveadvocated for public health approaches to understandingand intervening to prevent radicalization, but medicalizingsocial and political problems carries its own risks. Othershave focused on building relationships within and betweencommunities to reach marginalized groups and individuals. The impact of anxieties about radicalization goes farbeyond the response to specific conflicts. In Europe andNorth America, concerns with security have fuelled the riseof authoritarianism and the polarization of political debateon immigration and pluralism.

This international conference bringstogether scholars from cultural psychiatry, psychology, political and social sciences toconsider the role of social dynamics, cultural contexts and psychopathology inpolitical radicalization to violent extremism.Participants will address four themes:1) current meanings and uses of the termradicalization; 2) social determinants, origins and dynamics of violentradicalization and extremism, includingindividual psychology, family dynamics, social structural and historical forcesassociated with colonization, globalizationand contemporary political, economic andsecurity issues; 3) radicalization in socialand cultural context, with cases studiesfrom Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas;and 4) community prevention and clinicalintervention to reduce the risk of violentradicalization and promote pluralism andsocial integration.
