Day1—Bali,(Benoa)Balireallyisasalluringaseveryonesays.Thisisland,slightlybiggerthanDelaware,hasitall:beaches,volcanoes,terracedricefields,forests,renownedresorts,surfing,golf,andworld-classdivesites.ButwhatsetsBaliapartfromothernearbytropicaldestinationsisBalinesetradition,andvillagersdedicatedtocelebratingit.Thehundredsoftemples,dances,rituals,andcraftslinkedtotheirancientHindufaitharen'tashowfortourists,butaliving,breathingcultureinwhichvisitorsarewarmlyreceivedbytheBalinese,whocherishtheirownidentities.Day2—ProbolinggoProbolinggoisabeautifulandenchantingcityonthenorthcoastofEastJava,Indonesia.ItislocatedononeofthemajorhighwaysacrossJava,hasaharbourfilledwithfishingvesselsandissurroundedonthelandwardsidebytheProbolinggoRegency,butisnotpartoftheregency.ProbolinggoishometotheJavanese,Maduranese,Pendalungan(descentsofJavaandMaduranese)andTenggerese,whostillpracticetheircenturies-oldcustomsandtraditions.ProbolinggoisborderedbytheimposingMountSemeru,BromoandArgopuromountaingroup,andlinedwithlovelybeachestothenorth.Day3–SumenepSumenepissleepytownlocatedontheeasternsideoftheislandofMadura.Sumenepandthesurroundingareasarehometoanumberoftraditionalartsandcrafts–amongthemtheproductionofKeris(daggers),batik,woodcarvingoftheKardulukstyle,andtheMuangSangkaldances.SumenepisalsoknownfortimewornvillasandhistoricbuildingsincludingtheSumenepGreatMosqueandthePalace(Keraton)ofSumenep.TheislandofMaduramaybemostfamousforitsbullraces,whichareopenedwiththeperformanceofSaronen,atraditionalMaduresemusic.

Day5—AnakKrakatoaIntheSundaStraitofIndonesialiesanareathatwaswitnesstooneofthemostdevastatingvolcaniceruptionsinhistoricaltimes.AnakKrakatoaisavolcanothatfirstemergedfromtheseain1930andhasgrowncontinuouslysincethe1950s.Theactivenatureofthevolcanoistheultimatedeciderofwhetherornotalandingcanbemadeontheblacksandbeachesoftheisland.Krakatoa’sactivefumaroles,lavaflows,beautifullycoloredrocksandthevolcanoitselfareallstunning.Day6—AtSea Day7—Padang,SumatraForCupekPadangispartoldporttown,andpartmoderncapitalofWestSumatra.Dutchcolonialiststradedcoffeeandspicesfromtheharborstartinginthe17thcentury.DrivingoutfromPadangonecanreachCupek,aMinangkabauvillageinSumatra’sinterior.TheancestralhomelandsoftheMinangkabau,devoutMuslims,arecenteredinWestSumatra’slushhighlandsandstretchasfarastheseashore.Theyclaimtheworld’slargestmatrilinealsocietyandownershipofafamily’sproperty—theirhomes,ricepaddiesandthelike—passesfrommothertodaughter.
Day8–BatuIslands,SumatraTheBatuIslandsareanarchipelagoofroughly50islandslocatedoffthewestcoastofSumatra.TheislandshaveacloseculturalandgovernmentalconnectionwiththefamousNiasIslands.Theislandsaregenerallylowandforested,mostlywithcoconutpalmsforcopraproduction,andsomeforestproducts.Manyoftheislandsareframedbyexquisitebeachesstuddedwithpalmtreesandsurroundedbyvibrantandclearaquamarinewater.TheBatu(orTelos)Islandsarelocated
ontheequatorandareknownworldwidetosurfersforthespecialwavesfoundalongtheirshores.Day9–BawemataluwoThelocalvillageofBawomataluoisfoundintheNiasIslandswheretheislanderswereoncesaidtobefierce.Traditionally,passingthroughvariousstagesofgrowthforachildorjuvenilerequiredthatanimalsbeslaughteredorenemieskilled.Thereforeyoungmenpreparedtobecomewarriorsatanearlyage.Oneofthepreparationswasstonejumping,aritualwhereyoungstersjumpedover1.5to2-meter(5to6.5feet)highstonetowers.Onceaboycouldjumpoverthestonetower,itsignifiedthathewasreadytoassumetheresponsibilitiesofaman.Day10—SimeulueIslands,SumatraWithsomeofthehighestbiodiversityofanywhereintheentireAsia-Pacificregion,thesmallislandgroupofSimeulueisasyetunspoiledandundeveloped.LocatedatthenortherntipofSumatraoffthewestcoast,theislandsarepartofAcehprovince.Severalearthquakeshaverockedthisregioninrecentyears;oneinparticularisreportedtohaveraisedpartoftheislandsabout2meters,or6feet,upoutofthewater.Day11—Sabang,PulauWE/BandaAcehSabangisthelargestcityontheislandofWehorPulauWeh.Wehisasmall,activevolcanicisland,justnorthwestofSumatra.It'satthenorthernendoftheIndonesianArchipelagoandatonetime,wasacoalloadingstationforshipspassingbetweenEuropeandAsia.Today,theislandisknownforitsecosystemandmuchofitssurroundingseaandinlandareashavebeendeclaredaswildlifeprotectionareasbytheIndonesiangovernment.PulauWehattractsvisitorsseekingunderwaterdiving,hikingthroughthevolcanicmountainsandrelaxationbythebeach.BandaAceh,thecapitalofBandaProvincewithapopulationofover200,000people,wasseverelyhitbyatsunamiin2004.Sincethistragedy,thecommunityhasresurgedbothintermsofculturalrevivalandbuilding.TheBlangPadangParkandTsunamiMuseumwereconstructedasmemorialstoallthenationsthathelpedAcehaftertheterribleearthquakeandtsunami.Thecitywasoriginallybuiltinthelate15thcenturyandwasastopforhajjpilgrimstravelingbyseatoMecca.IthasbeenathrivingandstrategicportintheIndianOceaneversince.Day12—Belawan,SumatraSumatraisthefourthlargestislandintheworld.AlthoughnotknownforthericharchaeologicalsitesthatdistinguishJava,Sumatraoffersmagnificentnaturallandscapes.TheportservesasourgatewayforMedanandLakeToba,
SoutheastAsia'slargestlake,whichliesabout120milesfromBelawan.SumatraisalsovitaltoIndonesia'seconomy,withover60%ofthecountry'stotalproductioncomingfromtheisland.BelawanisoneofthebusiestportsinIndonesia.Exportsincludeminerals,oil,palmoil,rubber,teaandtobacco.Day13—BelawanforGunungLeuserNationalParkGunungLeuserNationalParkcoversmorethan3,000squaremilesinnorthernSumatra,Indonesia,straddlingtheborderofNorthSumatraandAcehprovinces.ItisnamedafterMountLeuser(10,230feet),andincludesawiderangeofecosystems.Mostoftheparkismountainous.ItwasdeclaredanUNESCOWorldHeritagesite“TropicalRainforestHeritageofSumatra”,becauseofitsuniquebiodiversity,withmorethan120speciesofmammals,190speciesofreptilesandamphibians,350speciesofbirdsand4000plantspecies.
