A FOODIE’S GUIDE TO NEW YORKNew York City has been crowned The Dining Capital of the World - and it’s easy to see why. From cozy little cupcake shops to three Michelin stars restaurants, the city is a foodie’s paradise. But where to start, you ask? To help you make your way through the maze, we’ve mapped the best NYC neighborhoods for gourmands.

SUMMER PACKAGESSit back and relax with EF’s Summer Packages. We’ll take care of flights, accommodation and lessons - so you can focus on enjoying your trip abroad* .

Welcome to one of New York City’s most effortlessly chic neighborhoods. From charming italian trattorias to typical French bakeries, there’s something for every taste here. While you’re there stop by the famous gastropub “The Spotted Pig” for the town’s best burgers. You’ll be glad you did.

1. WEST VILLAGE

Step into this colorful and vibrant neighborhood and you’ll be transported to China, Indonesia, or Thailand in a heartbeat. Satisfy your craving for dim sum in the quaint Nom Wah Tea Parlor, where you can savor made-to-order dim sums, scallion pancakes and turnip cakes.

2. CHINATOWN

The artistic neigbhorhood, replete with quaint antique stores and delicatessen, is also a food lover’s paradise. You’ll find up-and-coming Scandinavian restaurants like Aska and Texas-style BBQ joint like BrisketTown, which serves the most tender slices of brisket you’ll ever have.

3. WILLIAMSBURG

Located in the heart of Queens, thisdiverse neigborhood is home to thefinest dumplings and the best handpullednoodles. It’s easy to see why: large Chinese and Korean communities have called this neighborhood their home. Check out the Dumpling Galaxy for some of the most flavorful dumplings in town.

4. FLUSHING

Over the years, this scenic neighborhood has become very popular with tourists. For a hidden gem, stroll down to Pisillo Italian Panini to get a generous, fresh panini. While you’re there, check out the less Italian - but no less tasty - Red Egg for dinner. The Sino-Peruvian restaurant serves the best crispy shrimp rolls.

5. LITTLE ITALY

Here’s why taking time off is good: 1. It will enhance your creativity: By hashing out the same repetitive tasks over and over for a long period of time, our creativity dwindles over time. Taking a break –no matter how long - will get these creative juices flowing again. 2. It will boost your performance: Our brain is just like a muscle, and working for a long period of time without breaks wears it out. A getaway will allow the brain to get the rest it deserves - and get you to come back rejuvenated and energetic. 3. It will improve your physical and mental health: Take a few days off and take the time to recharge the batteries that have been worn out by too little sleep and too little exercise. Your mental and physical health will thank you. 4. It will bring your relationships closer: Coming home late from work and working on weekends can strain relationships. Spending quality time with your loved ones - at home or away - can allow time to reconnect and deepen existing connections. 5. It will lower the chances of a burnout: We’ve all seen it - the exhausted, overwhelmed co-worker who’s collapsed at his desk or the friend who just had to take a break. Avoiding a collapse is as easy as taking some days off. Are you finding yourself in need of a break? If you do, check out our easy getaways below.

5 GOOD REASONS TO TAKE TIME OFFIn today’s fast-paced world, work doesn’t stop at the office. Cellphones continue to ring and emails continue to ping far into the night, and we just plug away. But research shows that knuckling down tirelessly may be counter-productive. Instead, it’s often more beneficial to slow down and take a break.

Manchester is one of Britain’s most vibrant destinations. Packed with cultural heritage and innovative student population; the city blends tradition with a lively, modern way of life. To find out what makes the city so special, we spoke to Hannah Teece, School Director of EF Manchester and expert on all things the northern city has to offer.

BEHIND THE SCENES IN MANCHESTER

Manchester is famous for being a cultural hub that’s produced the likes of Oasis and The Smiths. Where are the best spots to connect with the city’s artistic past and present?Manchester has a diverse cultural scene with amazing gig venues, galleries, libraries and museums. There are lots of different areas to explore and so many venues to mention! The Northern Quarter is famous for its great bars, boutique shops and street art. For live music head to Night and Day Cafe, Matt and Phreds Jazz Club or Band on the Wall where many famous bands and musicians have played over the years. The Northern Quarter is also home to Piccadilly Records – a vinyl store that is a Mancunian institution. The recently opened HOME, an art-house cinema, theatre and exhibition space, is also an incredible venue and cultural hub for the city as is the Bridgewater Hall and the Lowry

at Salford Quays. And of course, we can’t talk about Manchester without mentioning football... City or United, blue or red: what do students think of the city’s sporting pedigree? Manchester is definitely a city that is passionate about football. We run weekly tours of the United and City stadiums and visits to the National Football Museum, which is in the city centre. Plus, we also offer tickets to Premiership and Champions League matches! It’s not just about football though – the city is also home to Old Trafford international cricket ground and the Manchester Aquatics Centre. We’ve previously hosted the Commonwealth Games and most recently the Rugby World Cup. The Peak District National Park is also on our doorstep – it is the perfect location for any students who enjoy walking, cycling, rock climbing, kayaking

and other outdoor pursuits. One last thing, can you tell us something people don’t usually know about you? I spent my third year of university on an Erasmus exchange program so know first hand what it’s like to study a language as an international student. I spent half of the year in Berlin and the second half in Perpignan and had an absolutely amazing, life-changing experience!

3 TIPS FOR BETTER GLOBAL NETWORKINGAs business becomes increasingly globalized, cultural knowledge is more important than ever. Whether it’s to expand your business internationally, meet industry leaders abroad, or get a job in a different country, global networking is crucial. To that end, we’ve included a few pointers to network smoothly and seamlessly across borders.

The acceptable amount of space varies wildly across cultures. While in some countries it is considered commonplace and polite to stand close to one’s interlocutor, the same practice can be seen as intrusive by others.

In some countries like the US, a silence is generally regarded as uncomfortable. Alternatively, other countries like Germany usually have a less negative view of silence, tending to regard it as a normal and even productive moment of reflection.

In some places, a conservative business dress code is preferred, while in other countries –like in certain Scandinavian countries-, business attire is more casual. So the next time you’re looking to strike a deal, keep these pointers in mind - your business will thank you.

THE CASE FOR LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGELearning a new language carries loads of benefits, from boosting CVs to delaying Alzheimer’s. Here we have a look at the top three advantages.

From a professional standpoint, learning a new tongue is life-changing. It increases job prospects in a snap: whereas you used to be able to work in just one country, now a whole new continent (or two!) opened up.

Naturally, speaking at least two languages will jump-start your career at home, too.Being a global citizen who is able to communicate with people from all over the world is crucial to our globalized world.

What’s more, learning a new language has cognitive benefits, too. It has been found to improve memory and concentration, and lower the risks of Alzheimer’s.

And that’s not all! Speaking more than one language has other intangible perks, too. A new language helps you to understand other people and see the world through their eyes. What’s more, experiencing a new way of living

and adapting to your surroundings enhances tolerance and openness, and promotes diversity.

So next time you’re looking to get a promotion, score higher on a test or simply make new friends, you know what to do.

THE BEST ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES IN THE WORLDDid you know that Swedes are the best non-native English speakers in the world, while Argentines are number one in Latin America? A new report from EF sheds light on English proficiency levels across the globe.

The fifth edition of the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), published on November 3rd 2015, ranks 70 countries and territories based on data from more than 910,000 adults. The study not only evaluates English levels across countries, but also across regions, gender, and age groups. Not surprisingly, Sweden grabbed the first spot in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands and Denmark. What’s startling, though, is that the gap between the highest ranking country and the last one widened this past year. What’s more, it was found that women have stronger English skills than men – worldwide. While the gender gap is minimal in Northern Europe, it is widest in the MENA region and Eastern Europe.

More importantly, the report shows that there are strong correlations between English ability and income, Internet connectivity and scientific research. Concretely, this means that the higher a country’s English level is, the more money its people make, the more connected it becomes and the more it innovates.
