INTERNATIONAL TM Newsletter AUTUMN 2014 UNITED KINGDOM CHAPTER 208 On the 10th July at Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Canary Wharf office, the first ASIS Women in Security event in a long time was held. It was the first event that I had ever organised and couldn’t have done it without the help of Amanda McCloskey (CIS Security), Graham Bassett and Steve Emmins; these things seem to just ‘happen’ when you are a participant and I soon learnt that it is not that straight forward when you are actually organising things yourself! As I’ve said, this was the first event in a long time, which gave me the opportunity to try something a bit different. Whilst wanting it to be aimed at women in the industry, I didn’t want it to be exclusive: a theme we will be developing throughout our meetings will be “Creating a Community”, where like-minded people can go for support, advice, or to just talk through things and that men would benefit from attending just as much as women. I also had feedback about what people wanted/what they thought about other events, and lots of people came back saying that security can be a bit of an ‘Old Boys Club’ and if you don’t fit in/have the right background etc, networking at these events is sometimes an uphill struggle. We therefore decided that we wanted to do this first session on networking and I wanted people to come away from this meeting feeling a little bit more confident about the next networking event that they attended.  I also liked that this isn’t something that only women would benefit from, but anyone new to the industry, or those who have joined security through untraditional routes. We found Vanessa King (The Fire Inside) who coaches people for public speaking and asked her to help us with the event. It was a small group (23 people) and Vanessa organised an interactive event, lots of group activity under the theme of networking.  We all sat down in very respectable- looking theatre style seating, politely leaving the usual gaps in- between us and others we didn’t know, people avoiding the front rows etc. After a brief introduction, the chairs were chucked around the room and we got on to our first networking exercise. It was fun, broke the ice, but got us all thinking about the value of networking. We then looked at how to approach a group, using body language as a guide to work out who is the best person/group to approach, so we aren’t just hovering and trying to squeeze into conversations and looking like social lepers when we can’t get into a group. We also, very importantly, learnt how to ditch someone who is boring - the secret of this, we will not tell!!  Our final group activity was working on a 60 second elevator pitch; the trick of this is to leave a person wanting to learn more and that if you come across as if you are trying to sell something, people will switch off, but if you can get them interested in a solution you can offer without going on too much about your product, people will be interested in understanding more about what you do. We learnt that no one (no matter how well connected and confident) really likes  being put on the spot and doing these pitches and that it is something that we can all learn to improve upon. One of the things I really liked about the event is that I think most people spoke to everyone around the room: we didn’t just stick to the couple of people who we knew, but actually spent a lot of time learning more about the other people with us. One of the things the WSS encourages for their networking (an unwritten rule that they have) is that after the event, you must speak to someone who you have never met before and I think this is a philosophy that we should adopt too.  The last part of the meeting was a group discussion as to how we want to progress the group, the best way to communicate; how we can create a community that supports the group (without being too salesy). Again, it was really refreshing to see group participation, people genuinely interested in how we can develop ASIS UK, WIS SUMMER MEETING Dawn Holmes CPP ASIS NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR – WINNER 2013, 2012, 2008 & 2003 – HONOURABLE MENTION 2011, 2006. continued on page 4

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Dear colleagues, welcome to the autumn newsletter. We've seen some real highs and lows in the world ofsecurity, during the summer. On a positive noteIFSEC's first London based event was highly successfuland gave many people the opportunity to attend for thefirst time. Clearly some of our friends in the north willnot have been able to attend, but ProfessionalSecurity's TWENTY 14 roadshow has been all acrossthe country, bringing all parts of the professiontogether.

On a sadder note we have seen an escalation ofviolence in Israel and Gaza. The kidnap and murder ofthree young Israeli men sparked reprisals that haveescalated and reopened old wounds.

The conflict in Eastern Ukraine between Pro Russianseparatists and the Ukrainian government reached anew low in July when a Malaysian Airlines flight fromAmsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was blown out of the skyover disputed territory with the deaths of hundreds ofinnocent lives.

These two deeply sad events must serve as a reminderto us of the delicate balance between peace andconflict and the responsibilities that we have assecurity professionals to prepare our respective

organisations, employees andcustomers for the possibility ofdanger or conflict in our daily lives.

In the 9 years since the attacks of7/7 we have enjoyed a gooddegree of improved safety, largelydue to the technology andinnovations conceived, designedand brought to the market by manyof our members. But this is afragile position and we must all remain alert to thedangers of extremism, not least from the potentialthreat posed by the radicalised and well trained Britishand Europeans returning from Syria.

Ending on a positive note, it is really encouraging tosee the Security Profession coming together in thepreparation and planning for the Joint SecurityAssociations Fundraising Event. This Black Tie dinnerwhich will be held on 30th September at the TowerGrange Hotel in London is expected to raise over£40,000 to be split between St Giles Trust and PTSDResolution. Details of how to buy tickets can be foundat: http://tinyurl.com/q2ubjga

I hope to see you there.

the group, it also meant I wastalking less (which we all probablythought was a good thing!!).

We finished the event networkinglike there was no tomorrow, everyone giving really positivefeedback and leaving looking happy(if not a bit sloshed)!!

I learnt a lot from this first event:

running these events isn’t as easyas it looks; that I was really lucky tobe surrounded by a group of peoplewho were just as passionate atprogressing this as I am; and wasreally encouraged by the brilliantresponses from everyone that wineis very important.

We are now looking at planning thenext event, (we are happy to workwith anyone who would like to seeus tackling a particular topic, so justlet me know if you want somethingraising). We are eager tocomplement the existing Women’sgroups: there is room for us all andmy goal is that these groups all existto give people lots of choice in theevents that are available. The groupconsensus was that we run a moreinformal event, continue with theinteractive activities, maybe have anannual event where we concentrateon having someone like Vanessa to

help with things like networking, presentations etc.

I would like to thank everyone whoattended, who made the event ahuge success. Amanda, for beingamazingly organised and sogenerous with her time, Susan fortaking the photos and CIS forsponsoring the refreshments. Here’slooking to event number two - andmany more . . .

Thank you, DawnDawn Holmes CPP

ASC

“Shopping Where the IndustryShops”

– An Introduction to theAssociation of Security

Consultants (ASC).

ASIS UK Chapter and theASC have always had agood working andsupportive relationship sowe are pleased to have thispiece in our Newsletter –Mike Hurst, Editor.

What is the ASC exactly?

The ASC was set up nearly 25 yearsago by some forward thinkingindependent security consultantswho wanted to join together andcommit to some stringent self-regulating to give clients the bestpossible experience in theknowledge that they were vetted bytheir peers and were totallyaccountable at all times.

Only genuinely independentconsultants are accepted as fullmembers and since applicationsare scrutinised carefully by themembers of the 12 strong ASCboard (who may well be competitorsin some form or another) theprocess is detailed and rigorous.

ASC members’ multi-striped tiesrepresent their broad range ofbackgrounds, including but notlimited to police, insurance, thearmed forces and the generalsecurity industry.

The ASC’s patrons are Lord PeterImbert of New Romney (former MetPolice commissioner & LordLieutenant of Greater London), LordBrian Mackenzie of Framwellgate,Lord James Bethell, and Air ChiefMarshal Sir Stuart Peach, ViceChief of Defence Staff.

What has the ASC ever done forus? ( apart from the viaducts, thesanitation . . .)

With apologies to Monty Pythonbecause we’re really nothing likethem. That is apart from having asense of humour, lots ofexperience, we make a lot ofpeople smile, some of us areapproximately the same age group. . . so well, really nothing likethem at all.

That’s because we are really a lotmore serious for most of the time.We have to be. Our backgroundsare serious. Special Branch.Security product manufacturing.HMG/Military Security. Securityrisk assessments, specifying andinstallation. CCTV design.Integrated systems. Accesscontrol. Insurance investigations.Lock design. Securing governmentbuildings here and abroad. Fireand burglary investigations.Designing buildings to minimisethe effects of explosive devices.Patent issues. Training foreignpolice forces. British andEuropean Standards compliance.Specialist product development.Market research and appraisal.Takeovers and mergers. MBOs.Security audits. Fraudinvestigation. Forensics. How longhave you got to read the rest ofthe list? You get the idea.

Been there, done it, have thearmour plating

If it’s security related, you name it,the chances that an ASC memberhas considerable experience andwill be well matched to help youwith the issues you face, and canput a multi-skilled team together ifthat’s what you need. Weird orwonderful, mundane or multi-facetted, the security industryshops at the ASC. Add to that allthe big household names – UKgovernment, BBC, TradingStandards, ABI, UK armed forces, many top 100 organisations, majorutilities, loss adjusters, consultingengineers, leading legal firms, thelist goes on. And on.

ASC members sit on all the key BSIcommittees and so do more thanjust know the current Standards –they are helping to shape the onescoming along. This means that theycan often save unnecessaryexpense by keeping clients aheadof the game.

So what can the ASC do for you?

Firstly it can provide anyone with asecurity function with a reliable, accountable and (upfront) freeinformation resource to bounceyour problems and issues off forsome feedback and advice on thebest available solutions. The ASCreally is the security industryequivalent of cricket’s Jimmy

Steve Emmins, Graham Bassett, ASC Chairman, Alan Hildage, ASIS Nominee for the ASC Imbert Prize, Commissioner Adrian Leppard QPM

(CoLP) and Mike Hurst at the ASC Lunch.

Anderson – England’s “go-to” bowler when you reallyneed some effective results quickly.

And yes, sometimes that does mean giving a push anda shove where merited – ASC Members’ reports andactions have helped to take a goodly number ofcriminals, inside and outside of clients’ organisations, out of circulation and into government ‘hotels’ and theASC is quite proud to have done so.

ASC’s Code of Conduct emphasises clientconfidentiality and discretion. It has to, and NDAs andConfidentiality Agreements are expected andwelcomed.

All advice given has to be objective and impartial, independent of suppliers of goods or services. No ifs orbuts. That’s so important I’ll repeat it. All advice givenhas to be truly objective and impartial advice, independent of suppliers of goods or services. Oftensales staff working for particular companies thatsupply goods or services call themselves consultantsbecause they give advice. It’s chalk and cheese.

All members are registered as Independent SecurityConsultants (and are able to use the post nominal RISC).

Members’ names and their individual areas ofexpertise and experience can be found on the ASCwebsite www.securityconsultants.co.uk

To be sure the ASC has traditionally had a low profilebut individually and collectively is an integral andlargely unsung vital cog in the UK security industry, working to compliment and assist ASIS and other keysecurity industry organisations to protect people andassets, their freedom and safety.

The ASC also welcomes Associate Members who workfor suppliers in the industry or within corporate entitiesand appreciate the networking opportunities at theregular ASC business clubs and at the prestigiousannual conference which this year will host the Womenin Security awards.

Persuading SeniorManagement withEffective, EvaluatedSecurity Metrics

The ASIS Defense andIntelligence Council, FoundationBoard of Trustees, FoundationResearch Council, and ASISInternational (ASIS) havecollectively invested over$100,000 and countless hours torealize this comprehensive studyon the development andimplementation of securitymetrics. Security metrics arevital, but in the field and in theliterature, one finds few testedmetrics and little guidance on

using metrics effectively to informand persuade seniormanagement.

To address the gap, the ASISFoundation sponsored a majorresearch project designed to addto the body of knowledge aboutsecurity metrics and to empowersecurity professionals to betteraccess and present metrics. Theresearch involved an industrysurvey on the use of metrics andin-depth interviews with 16security practitioners to gathercase studies of the effectivemetrics they employ.

Other educational activities areplanned to help practitioners

The Ministry of Justice hasannounced that enforcedsubject access requests willbecome a criminal offenceunder new legislation set to be introduced on 1December 2014.

Enforced subject access iswhere individuals are forced bysomeone like a prospectiveemployer to make a dataprotection subject accessrequest and reveal the resultsto them, typically in relation tocriminal conviction data.

ICO Head of Strategic Liaison,Jonathan Bamford, recentlyblogged about the need for anurgent change to the law toprotect the public. Responding

to the Ministry of Justice’slatest announcement on 26June 2014, the ICO said:

“We welcome the news that itwill become a criminal offenceto require someone to make asubject access request. It is aclear perversion of anindividual’s own rights, withconsequences likeunwarranted loss ofemployment opportunities. Italso undermines importantpublic policies such as therehabilitation of offenders.

“Our next step is to developguidance that explains exactlywhat this law means fororganisations and forindividuals. We will be

working to ensure that thosewho are involved in thisunsavoury practice are awarethey will be committingcriminal offences and we willbe preparing ourselves toprosecute those who areinvolved in the practice.”
