A law was passed in 2005 to stop criminalsfrom making methamphetamine byrestricting access to the drug’s keyingredient: ephedrine or pseudoephedrine(PSE). Illinois law restricts the sale ofproducts containing ephedrine or PSE inthese ways:• IDENTIFICATION AND LOG

REQUIREMENTS. A consumer wishing to buy productscontaining ephedrine of PSE must show a government-issued photo ID and sign a log. This information will bekept confidential but must be shown to lawenforcement upon request.• PURCHASE LIMITS. A consumer may buy no more than two packages of productscontaining ephedrine or PSE in a single transaction. A consumer may buy no morethan 7500 milligrams of ephedrine or PSE in a 30-day period.• PRESCRIPTIONS. Consumers with valid prescription for ephedrine or PSE are notbound by the restrictions of this law.Other restrictions also apply to this law, please ask your pharmacy how these mayaffect you.

My elderly family member cannot get their words out likenormal and we’re up all night. What is this sudden change?

This could be due to many reasons. The elderly personcould be experiencing a change in mental status that wesometimes call delirium. They could also be enduring amood disorder such as depression. Or, they could be in thenext stage of a slowly progressing dementia. Deliriumusually is characterized by a sudden change in the person’sability to concentrate, problem solve and pay attention.Sometimes they will be as though they cannot control theiremotions and we call this agitation. The underlying causeof delirium is best determined by a medical doctor. Such

diagnoses as an infection or change in metabolic functioning can causedelirium. Symptoms of depression in an older person include “aches andpains”, lack of energy, low motivation, isolating themselves andforgetfulness. Dementia is a slowly progressing disease that begins with the person not being able to organize tasks, planactivities or appearing to lack a desire to participate in life in general. This is called executive functioning. The earlieststages of a dementia are hard to detect and not always noticeable in day to day conversations. It is important to distinguishthe actual diagnoses because of treating each one individually. It is also important to rule out other factors that may becausing symptoms such as some medications and their side effects. The medical doctor is the expert in that area.
