1. Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to actively participate by attending class and completing assigned activities. Students are also expected to participate in class discussions, serve in groups, complete assignments on time, respect diverse perspectives and opinions. When giving answers in a signed or written form, students should support opinions and answers with reasons, explanations and documentation from a variety of sources. This class will form a small community and your effort - or lack of - impacts the success of the group. If you know you will be absent from class, make arrangements for a classmate to take notes and collect handouts for you. Please check Canvas for all class updates, assignments and information. 2. Participation: Participation in class activities and discussions are crucial to your success in this class. If you do not participate in group activities, points will be deducted (10 points per class session). A lack of participation and readiness for course activities and discussions will negatively impact your grade. It is expected that students attend all classes, will arrive on time for class, stay the entire period, and avoid behavior that interferes with the concentration and learning of other students. Attention should be given to instructors, guest speakers, and fellow students. If you are physically present but not engaged in class (listening to devices through earphones, using your phone during class, etc.) you will be approached by instructor and reminded of the student responsibilities in this course. After the reminder, you will be asked to leave. Students who lack requisite classroom engagement will be greatly affect their grades. 3. Assignments: All assignments are to be submitted as instructed. No exceptions. Please follow the instructions, ask questions and proofread your assignments as to avoid point deductions. Absolutely NO papers, videos or assignments will be accepted past due dates. Please discuss individual student needs with both faculty. 4. No Talking Policy: We insist on maintaining a signing environment at all time in the classroom for two reasons: One, it is considered rude and insulting to talk in front of a Deaf person and not make the information passing between you and the other person accessible. Since a good number of your teachers will be Deaf and your goal is to get to knowDeaf people in the community. It is imperative that you develop thehabit of signing when Deaf people are present. Secondly, this is an immersion class, which means only the target

language is used. Using only ASL helps you to develop both your comprehension skills and your expressive skills quickly and effectively. Talking disrupts this process and delays your language development. If a fellow student asks you for help, feel free to help by using signs you have learned or by writing back and forth. In this way, I can see what is being said and can join in to help, if needed. This policy is strictly enforced and I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in creating a equitable environment for all of us. If you are using spoken English, muttering, whispering, using ‘hearing behaviors’ you will receive first, a warning from the instructor, then written documentation, regarding not following the syllabus contract and a meeting will be called to discuss your suitability for this program. Not adhering to this basic principle of respect will also affect your overall grade. 5. Office hours & appointments: Please email me if you’d like to meet with me at a specific time, and I will be sure to make myself available for you. Please keep your appointments with me, and if you have to cancel, please email me. Signed/Expressive Presentations: Your Presentation videos must be upload to GoReact in Canvas. Student Contract

CLASS: ASL 1

By signing this form, I agree to NOT USE MY VOICE while in class because I understand that first and

foremost it shows a lack of respect to Ms Clark, the Deaf Community, and the other students in the class. Secondly, Deaf people are offended when hearing people use their voice in their presence, and that doing so is rude, disrespectful, and shows arrogance. In fact, it is a form of oppression to Deaf people. Third, I am aware that I am taking an ASL class, which means I must use American Sign Language to communicate in class. I will not use my voice to talk to another person in class because by talking, I am not relying on my eyes and hands to learn, practice, and better develop my ASL skills. I do not want to take advantage of my ability to hear because it will not do me any favors in this class. Furthermore, I understand that if I speak then I will not be fully ready for the exams because I have not relied on my eyes and hands in this course. It is understood that if I am caught talking, I will be asked to leave the class and write a one page paper about why I do not respect the instructor and the other students in the class (due the following class session). The second time I am caught talking in class, I will be removed from the class and my grade will drop one letter grade. If I continue to talk in class the third time, I will receive an “F” letter grade and be removed from the class for the remainder of the semester. If I am under 18 years of age, and caught talking in class, I will be asked to sit outside in the hallway and write the letter due the next class session. The second time I choose to talk I will be dismissed from class again and expected to wait outside till class is over. On this second time, Ms. Clark will write a letter to my parents explaining why I was sent out of class as well as discuss further action with the Dean and my grade will drop one letter grade. If a third time occurs, I will be removed from my class for the rest of the semester and receive an “F” letter grade. I agree to be respectful and follow the rules set forth in this class. Sincerely Your Instructor, Merry Jo Clark I ________________________ have read the rules above and agree to use ASL to communicate during class and agree not to talk aloud in class. I also agree with the disciplinary actions that will take place if I choose to not adhere to these rules. _____________________________ __________________ ________________
