WHAT IS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE?

Landscape architects design and plan a myriad of outdoor space types, finding unique ways to engage people with their environment and their communities.

We attend accredited landscape architecture programs, and then seek professional licensure once in the professional realm. We work with engineers, architects, urban planners, landscaping companies, municipalities, government agencies and construction companies to develop their designs.

Think of iconic places like the St. Louis Arch Grounds and Forest Park. But also consider your downtown square, your local park, or even your own backyard. Green roofs, urban farms, corporate campuses—all define landscape architecture.

In the following pages, we’ll share some of the projects landscape architecture professionals are accomplishing. We appreciate you taking the time to familiarize yourself with our work, and learning about the value we provide.

Cortex InnovatIon CommunItySt. LouiS, MiSSouri

Originally envisioned as a research park, Cortex Innovation Community is quickly developing into a hub for start-up biotechnology companies, urban residences, and streetside shopping in the heart of St. Louis. With opportunities for a new light rail station and regional bicycle/pedestrian trail being studied, the community is poised for growth.

In an effort to spur development, SWT Design led a diverse team to develop the first phase of open space improvements for the district, including improvements to several district streets and a central park in the heart of the area, known as the Cortex Commons. The design team focused on Low Impact Development strategies to guide the improvements for the development, in addition to working with the client to secure grant funding for green infrastructure improvements.

To develop a scheme fitting a place for innovation, the team sought out inspiration in the world of science and technology. Neural networks, biomimicry, and DNA sequencing gave rise to design concepts, eventually translating into plan and site features. The development of the Commons and streetscapes is to serve as a blueprint for the development of the district on the whole. Low impact development strategies are emphasized in the design, particularly green stormwater infrastructure. The design team worked closely with the client to secure match funding through the MSD Green Infrastructure Early Action Projects program to incorporate bio-retention areas, raingardens, curb inlets, and underground stormwater storage. These elements are prominently featured in the landscape and, through signage, provide educational oportunities as well.

Within St. Louis, the Cortex Innovation Community serves to bridge the gap between major educational and medical institutions, while also serving as an economic driver in a blighted neighborhood in the heart of the city.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Page 11: ASLA St. Louis 2016 Advocacy

As a profession, we do much more than design parks and outdoor spaces. We engage with community partners like the St. Louis Office of Sustainability, STL Design Week, University of Missouri and many more—supporting efforts to engage the public at large about what supporting the landscape can do for our city and the greater midwest.

We provide education sessions, promote local parks, trails and other community spaces to help raise awareness about the availability of public spaces. We host bike tours of the city that highlight our rich history of landscape architecture and architecture.

We complete public service projects that help underserved municipalities plan parks, trails and other connectivity designs to revitalize communities. We advocate for transportation and other land use legislation.

COLLABORATION + DESIGN

COLLABORATION + DESIGN

Landscape architects design, often working with landscaping or other construction companies to provide project oversight during the construction process. Think of the fashion designer imagining an outfit while a clothing manufacturer makes the apparel, or an artist designing a wall poster that’s printed by another company. Landscape architects and contractors are complementary but highly distinct professions.

Beyond construction companies, landscape architects often collaborate with a whole host of other professionals to make up the design team. A project like the Archgrounds not only includes landscape architects, but architects, engineers and multiple contractors as well.

Other projects may include planners, horticulturists, soil scientists, medical professionals, or other specializations in order to solve the design challenge.

PROFESSIONAL TEAMS, IDEAL RESULTS

Architects / Primarily design buildings and structures with specific uses, such as homes, offices and schools.

Civil Engineers / Apply scientific principles to the design and construction of public infrastructure such as roads, bridges and utilities.

Urban Planners / Develop a broad, comprehensive overview of development for entire cities and regions.
