Chair’s Message To all of the Akron ASME Members: Greetings from the Akron ASME Executive Board and the Chair.

As our Akron ASME Section continues through 2016, you will recognize that we are about two-thirds of the way through the Akron ASME active 2015-2016 season.

Our next activity is the Tuesday, April 5th Membership Appreciation/Renewal Night (previously “Industry Expo”) and then two “joint” activities following later in April: 1) a tour, to which we have been invited, of the Lubrizol facility with the SAE Cleveland section on Monday, April 18th; and, 2) a visit to the Hoover High School Robotics Lab with the Canton-Alliance-Massillon (CAM) ASME section on Thursday, April 21st.

Our May, 2016 activity will be a joint meeting with the Akron Chapter of ASM International at the MAPS Museum in North Canton, Ohio on Wednesday, May 18th, starting at 5:30 PM. Please place your reservations for the May meeting and join the section for a great program.

If you notice a trend towards joint society meetings, you are correct. This is a trend that was purposely taken to optimize the efforts in organizing meetings, be good stewards of our Section expenditures, and increase intersociety networking. Our Section’s financial wellbeing is still in a reduction mode. National ASME is no longer providing operation monetary support to the local sections. So, our primary monetary support of our Akron ASME Section is through membership donations. This year, the Akron Section saw a marked reduction in these donations.

I am very happy to note that the Professional Section of Akron ASME has been able to maintain our ties with, and commitment to, the Akron U Student Section. The March meeting was an example of this commitment, in which the University of Akron ASME Student Section provided the planning and coordination of a very good “Student Papers Night” meeting.

Thank you for your time and support, Dave Houser – 2015/2016 Chair

UAkron ASME newsletter by email – make sure you get one! As you probably know by now, due to cost considerations, Akron ASME has had to stop mailing hardcopy newsletters. So, it becomes increasingly important that we have a correct email address for you.

If we have an incorrect email address for you and you have not received an email notice regarding our newsletter, please email me, Brent Sisler, at [email protected] with your correct email address. You will get periodic notices from Akron ASME announcing: 1) upcoming events; 2) updating of our Akron ASME website ( formerly at http://www.ecgf.uakron.edu/~asme/akron/ and moving to asme.org); and, 3) posting of our updated newsletter to that website as an Adobe Acrobat *.pdf for your viewing, printing, and/or download.

UNew a few years agoU: Please be ready for a change in the way you receive emails from us. Matt Pruszynski had been sending Akron ASME emails (from [email protected] and [email protected]) and has retired from Akron ASME’s Board. We have moved to a GoDaddy server, and the new emails may look like “Express Email Marketing”. Rest assured it is still Akron ASME sending to you! You will not be getting any more or less emails from Akron ASME, than you have in the past. We just wanted you to be aware of this change, so you can ensure that your spam filter does not consider email from [email protected] spam.

If you no longer wish to receive emails from Akron ASME, there will be an automatic unsubscribe link at the bottom of the emails in the new email program. Just hit the link and you should no longer receive emails from us. Please let me (Brent Sisler, 330/836-9238 or [email protected]) know, if problems arise.

UAkron ASME “speakers” needed in high schools

The Akron Section of ASME would like to begin a project to put engineers in contact with area high school students. A need that has been made known to us is that the amount of graduating high-school students going on to study science and engineering is down in the Akron area.

Akron ASME is attempting to develop a pool of engineers that would be willing and able to go to a school for anywhere from a half hour to a couple of hours, based on their schedule, and speak to high school classes. The format is anything from an informal talk with a science classroom to a PowerPoint presentation to a group of students enrolled in science classes. We have a new “What is a Mechanical Engineer?” brochure from national ASME that makes such a visit very easy for someone willing to go into the schools. We have hundreds of copies on hand, ready to give to you. We have it as a *.pdf, too, if you’d like to take a look.

If you would be interested in getting involved with this program and helping educate students about science and engineering fields, please contact Cara Adams at caraadams302 @ yahoo.com.

Thanks for considering it!

On the following pages, you will find: 1. Mon., April 18, 2016 SAE Cleveland Section tour and meeting at Lubrizol. Note the reservations deadline of Monday, April 11th, for Akron ASME reservations, with reservations to either: 1) the noted SAE website or phone (if you are willing to prepay); or, 2) [email protected] or 330/864-7555 (please leave a message so I can call you back to confirm) (if you do not want to prepay). 2. Thur., April 21, 2016 joint meeting with CAM ASME at North Canton Hoover High School Robotics lab. Note the reservations deadline of Friday, April 15th, with reservations directly to Tom Davis, by email ([email protected]) or by phone (330/875-9833). 3. 3 sheets of information about the Hoover High lab. 4. Wed., May 18, 2016 joint meeting with Akron ASM at MAPS in North Canton. Note the reservations deadline of Monday, May 16th, with reservations directly to Dave Houser by email ([email protected]) or by phone [330/665-3753 (home) or 330/414-7687)].

Note about SAE reservations from Akron ASME members and guests For last fall’s three SAE events, I had an arrangement with Cleveland SAE to allow me to take your meeting reservations, without your prepaying. I have begged that consideration from SAE, since Akron ASME is not used to prepaying for any of our events. This is an effort to collaborate with SAE on events of mutual interest to both Cleveland SAE and Akron ASME. The upside to this arrangement is you need not prepay. The downside is I will consider you personally responsible for paying me if you reserve, whether you show up or not, since I will owe that to SAE and will have already paid them by personal check. So, please do not take these reservations casually: if you reserve, I expect you to pay me. As usual, please reserve at either [email protected] or 330/864-7555. If you reserve that way, I would like reservations a few days in advance of the SAE deadline, so I can give them a “heads up” of how many of us are coming.

As you reserve, I will need a society affiliation (Akron ASME, CAM ASME, AIAA, or “guest of xxxxx”, etc.), your email address, and/or your phone number, so I can get back to you to confirm your reservation. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. Brent C. Sisler, P.E. Treasurer & Program Chair, Akron ASME

Reservation Deadline: Friday April 15, 2016 Program: Tour of the Hoover High School FabLab and demonstration of the Hoover High 2016 FIRST Competition Robot. The Hoover High School Robotics Team (Team No. 4121) was started in 2010. They compete on the varsity level of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. This yearly competition is focused on a six week span from kick off to bag and tag day, in which they design, build, program, and optimize a robot. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, high school teams nationwide are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand", hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It is as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. The Hoover team recently competed in the 15th annual Buckeye Regional FIRST Robotics Competition held at the Cleveland State University and took 1st Place. This qualified them for FRC World Competition at St Louis the week of April 25th. Team members will be on hand to demonstrate their robot and discuss their design, build, and competition experiences. The FabLab at Hoover High School was funded from a grant from the Ohio Department of Education Straight A Fund. The lab is an interactive, hands-on, do-it-yourself lab that is based on the models developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Case Western Reserve University. The lab includes off-the-shelf, industrial grade fabrication and electronics tools, utilizing industry level software. Currently, extra-curricular opportunities such as summer camps and various engineering clubs for students in grades K-8 are being planned. Open lab times for the local community, outside of school hours, are planned to be made available within the next two years. The school hopes to create partnerships with local business in need of prototyping equipment who are also willing to provide students access to actual engineering design processes. There is also the possibility of creating office space and FabLab access for small business on the Hoover High School campus. Reservations: Make your reservation with Tom Davis by email ([email protected]) or calling (330-875-9833). Please remember to include your name and contact information (email or phone) so we can get back with you if we have any questions.
