Methodology
Closed sample of manufacturing Italian-owned companies with turnover over 50 M €with available financial statements for 3 years: 2006-08.
Identified the best 100 companies (relative to the sector median) out of about 2000as regards:
Rate of growth in turnoverProfitability
Ebitda/Turnover (positive ROI and ROE in the 3 years)Leverage
These firms were then analysed according to three strategic fundamental assets: innovation and value of patent rights, degree of internationalisation,
brand value. Using this procedure, 20 best-in-class firms were identified.
A similar approach was followed for the 40 best foreign-owned companies.

Excellence in industry
Most of companies initially identified are located in Northern Italy, in particular in the North West. Among Italian-owned firms, many belong to industrial districts

Excellence in industry
Italian-owned companies are concentrated in “traditional” sectors, while foreign-owned companies are concentrated in “scale intensive” sectors. “Specialised
supplier” sectors are well represented too, in particular in the mechanical engineering .

The positioning of foreign firms present in Italy was analysed on two fronts: value added per employee and job creation
The ranking by productivity has been computed relative to the sector median in the year 2008
The ranking by job creation has been computed in the 2006-2008 time span
