About This ReviewFurther to the Law no. 2 of 2015, issued on the 11th of March 2015, by HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the financial system, and per the announcement from the Ministry of Finance, the fiscal year 2014/15 was extended until the end of 2015 as a transitional period prior to the harmonization of the fiscal year with the calendar year starting in January 2016.

Accordingly, AZF publishes its report this year under the title ‘AZF Business Review’, covering the period from April 2014 to December 2015. Whereas the practice was to follow the fiscal year (from April to March every year), this time, the reporting cycle aims to cover the past fiscal year, plus the extension.

This review consists of facts, figures, statistics, results, illustrations and diagrams. With this format, the review comes as reference book to glance through.

Inspired by the Qatar National Vision 2030, and guided by our mission and vision, we have taken an impressive number of strides this year in different areas. Given that so many of our initiatives require strong collaborations between our member organisations, we can all be proud of our collective achievements as a shared success of each and every individual in Aspire Zone Foundation. A Qatari team, comprised entirely of Aspire Academy students and graduates, emerged victorious at the AFC U-19 Championship in Myanmar, While Aspetar became one of only nine healthcare organisations in the world to be awarded Platinum level accreditation by Accreditation Canada International.

Aspire Logistics hosted an impressive 229 day’s worth of local, regional and international sports-related events. Achievements like these exemplify the work we do every single day at Aspire and encourage us to move forward. Indeed, as Aspetar is currently expanding its suite of medical services and the facilities to deliver it, Aspire Logistics team has supported the team significantly in the areas of planning and delivery of Aspetar’s expansion. Elsewhere, Aspire Academy is currently planning its own expansion for February 2017, which will see the introduction of an innovative new training solution at the Academy, delivering improved football training in Qatar that will benefit generations to come. Another core area of our organisation is sustainable human development. In keeping with our desire to support healthy lifestyles and to cater to the community’s needs, we are

committed to making our exceptional expertise and first-rate facilities available not just to sports professionals, but to everyone in Qatar. Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) was established by Emiri Decree on the 1st of January 2008, with a promising mission to develop sports champions, promote healthy lifestyles and galvanize the sports economy. The vision is to become

Aspetar takes the lead at IOC World Conference on Injury and Illness Prevention of the Athlete in Monaco.

Aspetar provided medical services through the National Sports Medicine Programme (NSMP) to both the Algerian and Ivory Coast National Football Teams in the lead up and during the 2014 FIFA World Cup™held in Brazil.

Qatar U19 National Team, comprised of 100% Aspire players, won the AFC U19 Championship title in Myanmar. In the process, they qualified for the U20 World Cup in New Zealand as Asia’s Champions.


February 2015

Aspire Academy became an IAAF Accredited Training Centre. This designation will allow Aspire to host more international camps and put in place formal partnerships with the IAAF, such as coaching conferences and Asian youth training camps.

April 2015

Graduate Abdulla Al Tamimi won the 21st GCC Open Squash Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is the first time in the tournament’s history that a non-Kuwaiti player has won the title.

Aspire Torch Staircase Run was held, featuring Towerrunning World Championships with the participation of 550 runners; 400 of them were ITW athletes.

Aspetar was accredited at the Platinum level by ACI. Out of 97, Aspetar is one of the nine healthcare organizations that achieved Platinum status on their first survey. Aspetar has already started planning to obtain Diamond (highest) status in 3 years during the re-accreditation process.


EliteTraining Camps


Destination AZFAspire Zone Foundation is a centre of excellence that answers the needs of the professional athletes, as well as sporting clubs and federations from across the world. All come to experience the elite training camps hosted in Doha. World class services, recreational amenities, accommodation as well as sports medicine, research, and access to world standard facilities are provided. This makes the Aspire Zone experience memorable.

The range of elite athletic training camps hosted in Aspire include football, swimming, handball and rugby, to name just a few. So often, teams come back to Aspire ahead of their major competitions to benefit from the comprehensive services offered by AZF. All member organisations work as one for the benefit of athlete health and performance.

Focus: Altitude Training Camps The altitude training camps are supported by Aspetar’s altitude dormitory (48 beds facility). This one of a kind facility has gained international reputation in support of performance and research. Both teams and individuals benefit from this unique training experience.

In the past 19 months, the following participated in altitude training: squash world ranked players Mohamed El Shorbagy and Marwan El Shorbagy, Qatar Athletics - Middle Distance Group, French Rugby Team, South Africa Swimming Team, British Swimming Team, distance runner Bob Tahri, pentathlete Pavel Ilyashenko, French distance runner Mahiedine Mekhissi, middle distance runner Mukhtar Mohammed - British Athletics, and Olympic gold medal distance runner Mo Farah - British Athletics, and the Australian Swimming Team.


Focus: The Australian Swimming Team

The Australian Swimming Team partnered with Aspetar for a new Altitude Performance Program in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The team stayed in Aspetar’s altitude dormitory from May 1 to May 7, 2015 and trained in the Olympic pools at Hamad Aquatic Centre. Accessing Aspire Zone swimming facilities and other services, this partnership gave the team the chance to live high and train low. As part of the agreement, AZF was used as a training base ahead of the FINA World Championships in Kazan and the 2015 World Short Course Championships in Doha.

• “Our Performance staff have looked at a number of options in this area, benchmarking best practice in the area of altitude research and performance, and this partnership with Aspetar will only enhance what we already have in place with the AIS and the state institutes and academies,” said Swimming Australia CEO Mark Anderson in praise of the partnership with Aspetar.

“Geographically, it also makes good sense for us to have strong partnerships and good access to facilities in Doha, as a number of our teams will be competing in that part of the world over the next couple of years at World Championship events,” Anderson continued.

• Swimming Australia Head Coach Jacco Verhaeren commented on the team’s experience at Aspire Zone, saying: “The staging camp in Doha is a chance for our swimmers to familiarise themselves with the time zone and put the final touches on their World Championship preparations in a highly professional environment at the state-of-the-art Hamad Aquatic Centre.”

Top ranking team in Division 1 of the Ligue Nationale de Handball, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), returned for training at Aspire Zone for the third consecutive year, ahead of the 2015/2016 season. The team benefited from Aspire’s state-of-the-art facilities for intensive training, as well as staying at Aspire’s very own hotel, THE TORCH DOHA, and enjoyed its world-class hospitality services and facilities.

July 2015Aspetar hosted Welsh Rugby Union Team in preparation for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The Welsh Rugby Team Camp included access to sports medicine experts and the altitude dormitories at Aspetar and the training facilities of the Aspire Zone.

FocusFITPLAY: Aspire Sport Tech BenchmarkFITPLAY is a comprehensive sports injury management system that offers complete sports information of sport teams and athletes along with their electronic medical records. As much coordination needs to take place between the medical support team and coaches before the game and during training, the system has been designed exclusively for Qatar’s professional sports teams, sports clubs and federations to provide highly secured, athlete-focused injury/illness medical services information. The system is currently being used by Qatar National Football Teams since 01 Jan 2015.

An upgraded version to be rolled out in 2016 will include clinical module, rehab module, dashboards, offline version & integration with match and training session’s analysis systems.

The AZF revamped Website (www.aspirezone.qa) was launched in September 2015, with an Arabic version for the first time. The project was completed in one month, and is smart device friendly.

Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) and Qatar Stars League (QSL) signed an agreement that enabled QSL to utilize AZF’s event management system, ‘Bridge’. The online platform ‘Bridge’ was designed and developed by Aspire Zone Foundation as an IP owned by the state of Qatar. It can be used for large scale sporting and non-sporting events.

Continuous ImprovementsAZF HR is taking strides and measures towards the improvement of its processes, practices and comprehensive people strategy. These include:

• Continuous improvements to the Performance Management Process & Best Practices to optimize the performance monitoring process, work reviews and feedback and Goal Management i.e. 360 feedback, calculations criteria and KPIs.

• The HR Policies Manual has been updated to recognise and address people’s needs. It is an investment that can pay in increased productivity and minimized litigation.

• An action plan for the organisational climate survey, enabling HR to identify areas for improvement. The survey aimed at understanding and enhancing the working experience at Aspire.

• A succession planning procedure to ensure that 100% of employees holding senior positions are eligible under the succession plan framework.

• The cauterization of the payroll function (successfully having President Office and Aspire Logistics under the same function: President Office HR).

• Successfully automating the recruitment process on i-recruitment.

Performance ManagementAZF’s KPI Performance Management Solution is an enterprise wide solution that will allow the associated organisation to create, view and report out the strategic objectives, KPI’s, projects and aggregated data. Thus, it will allow performance to be measured against the established parameters.

We are paying more attention to our own employees to better understand what makes them more satisfied and more engaged at work. Employee satisfaction means lower employee turn-over, increased loyalty and improved profitability.

Focus: 10th AnniversaryOn 29 April 2015, AZF celebrated its 10th anniversary at The Torch Ballroom, honouring about 70 veteran employees who occupied different positions since the establishment. Upon the occasion, AZF published a documentary interviewing some of the honoured staff members who witnessed the changes and transformations that happened in Aspire since its inception. The video was viewed by more than 30,000 people on social media.

Qatar Wins AFC U-19 Championship in MyanmarA brilliant young team, comprised entirely of Aspire Academy champions, both graduates and student athletes, excelled in Qatar’s win of the 2014 AFC U19 World Championship title in Myanmar. Thanks to this success, the Qatari team also qualified for the U20 World Cup for the first time in 33 years. This achievement was the result of hard, professional, consistent work, which was orchestrated by many parties, one of which was Aspire Academy.

Aspire graduate Akram Afif was awarded the 1st West Asia Football Federation (WAFF) Championships U/23 Top Scorer. Afif is currently playing for KAS Eupen in Belgium.

Hall of Fame

Graduate Abdulla Al Tamimi won the 21st GCC Open Squash Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in April 2015. This is the first time in the tournament’s history that a non-Kuwaiti player has won the title.


Barshim was crowned the 2015 IAAF Diamond League High Jump Champion. A partnership agreement was signed with Mutaz and his coach Stanislaw Szczyrba, to serve as a role model for current student-athletes and represent the Academy internationally and in the Qatari society.


Ashraf El Seify, hammer throw became the first ever athlete to defend his age-group world title in Eugene USA, July 2014.

Abdulrahman Al-Naggar won bronze in singles, as well as bronze in senior team event with teammate Mohammed Abdulwahab in GCC Games in Saudi Arabia in October 2015. Al-Nagger and Abdulwahab were selected by the QTTA to play in the Senior World Championships in China, April 2015.

• Waleed Dalool (swimming) achieved 3 Qatar national records - 50m (senior), 100m (U17) and 200m (U17) Breast, two gold medals and one bronze at the GCC 25m short course championships

• Ali Turki Al-Owaida (fencing) claimed bronze at the Mediterranean Championship U15 category

• Ashraf Elseify (hammer throw) claimed silver (73:68m) in the Arab Championship in Bahrain

• Mutaz Barshim (high jump) got the gold medal (2:19m) in the Arab Championship in Bahrain, and his brother Moamer Barsham received the bronze in this same category (2:13m)

• Faisal Mir Rizwan won silver in the won silver in Kuwait

• Swimmer Waleed Rafiq Dalool is Qatar’s new rising star. He won silver in the 50m breast finals (junior division) in the Asian Championship in Thailand, last October; thus, setting a new Qatar National record. As well, he competed in both the senior and junior age groups, in GCC Championship, Doha, winning 5 medals, including Gold in 50m Breast Stroke (junior). In the GCC Games in Saudi Arabia, Dalool won silver in the 50m breaststroke (senior)

Mohammed Abdulhussein won the Angby International Table Tennis Cup (Boys U-15) which consisted of 46 players.


Talent ID & Development

Aspire Academy runs a number of projects and endeavors to assist in sporting talents’ scouting, identification and development. These include:

• Organising and hosting the 1st International Talent ID Conference, welcoming 230 delegates over 2 days. A supplement of the British Journal of Sports Medicine will be commissioned to publish all major papers of the conference, to include a consensus statement on Talent ID

• Placing Bronze Talent ID Screening equipment in all major Qatari schools, with follow-up training provided to all sports teachers for testing of year 4 and 5 boys to help signpost recruitment into MSSD program

• Testing in 100% of Independent Schools with support from the Supreme Education Council. 3,145 students in Grade 6 across Qatar have been tested in TID Bronze phase (50.4% Qatari), which represents an increase of 260 boys in comparison to 2013-2014


Tri-Series In the 2014-15 season, 35 visiting clubs, academy and national teams participated in the Tri-Series football competition, providing valuable experience to all generations of the football programme. Visiting teams included Chelsea, Galatasaray and Paris St-Germain as well as the national teams of Croatia, New Zealand and Chile. Multi Skill Development

The MSSD program focuses on recruiting identified Qatari and GCC young talents for the 2014-2015 season in order to develop their skills.

505 boys registered in MSSD in 2014/2015.

The Girls’ Program has also reached new heights in the 2013-2014 season, having successfully transferred 36 girls into federations or other national squads

The Illuminated LeaderWith the right mix between sport and education, Aspire Academy aims to make champions in life and sports. Tailored learning for the student-athletes is presented with the introduction of CAT4 standardized test. The process helps understand individual cognitive abilities for all G7- 11 students. Having a learning profile for each student-athlete also enables coaches to understand how each of their boys processes information, and so help them in their sport development. Aspire Academy pulls weight towards the enhancement of its curriculum and overall learning experience. Such efforts include:

• Progression towards the Council of International Schools (CIS) accreditation: Following a preliminary visit and audit by CIS officials, Aspire Academy has received (CIS) Membership which is an important milestone in the accreditation journey.

• Introduction of external benchmarking exam (ISA) in Math and English for Grades 7, 8, 9 & 10 and PISA international standardized exam, coordinated by SEC, for all boys aged 15 to benchmark Qatar’s performance in Science, Math and Reading against other countries.

• Collaboration with the Supreme Education Council in terms of the school’s curriculum and ‘Aspire for Education Conference’. The conference was held at Aspire Academy on 9-10 March 2015, and addressed the topic ‘Academic Support – Collaboration for Success’. More than 200 delegates from different Arab countries discussed how to improve the quality of academic support services and enhance awareness among schools, families and society.

• Enhanced wireless coverage in Aspire Academy for students and teachers, as the students need access to the e-learning applications while on the move.

• An upgrade to Aspire Academy Learning Centre with smartboards. The smartboards are equipped with brighter images, higher resolution, multi touch capability, cleaner sound quality, proper audio facility and document camera facility integration. The upgrade will help improve teaching, training and communications skills and student’s overall experience & performance.

Aspire Academy signed an agreement with the Supreme Education Council (SEC) to further strengthen the working partnership with the SEC and increase opportunities to identify, support and develop all eligible students who are talented in sports.


Collaboration for Effective Outcomes Aspire Academy consistently worked to enhance its offerings and opportunities. In so doing, Aspire Academy formed joint ventures with various sporting institutions and other organisations to add value to the sporting community. For example, in February 2015, Aspire Academy alongside the Japan Sports Council, Singapore Sports Institute and Hong Kong Sports Institute established the Association for Sports Institutes in Asia (ASIA) at ‘The Athlete Development Pathway’ Conference held in Tokyo, Japan. The association has been formed to encourage the sharing of expertise and good practice in sports science and in coaching, particularly in the development of elite youth athletes.

Other endeavors included:

• Aspire Academy commenced three-year research with NASA, FC Barcelona, Texas A&M and Karolinska Institute related to the Qatar National Research Fund Award project to investigate injury treatment and prevention for youth and professional footballers. Five clubs from Europe and USA (footballers i.e. Seattle Sounders, Philadelphia Union, Chicago Fire, Fiorentina and Rayo Vallecano) have joined the testing program.

• Aspire Academy hosted a group of the ‘Aspire in the World Fellows’ network for a two-day ‘Fellows Gathering’ to discuss relevant topics, do practical sessions, while cooperating to help the world of football on a performance and science level. Aspire Academy started the initiative at the Global Summit on Football Performance & Science in Paris in 2014.

• Aspire Academy established agreement with Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) as the National Development Centre for Youth Athletics. The Federation coaches and their athletes will now use Aspire as a training base and will gradually be integrated into our programmes, competitions and international training camps. Leading up to the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, we now have the opportunity to build a strong team with the chance to be successful at this event and beyond.

• Aspire Academy developed agreement with Qatar Fencing Federation, as a joint plan for identifying and developing young fencers. This agreement aims to promote fencing for the youth in general while identifying and supporting talented fencers.

• Qatar Airways, FC Barcelona and Aspire Academy hosted a friendly match at Miniestadi, Barcelona, between Qatar Airways & Aspire Academy–Football Dreams Africa team and FC Barcelona’s Infantil A Team. The friendly match brought the best out of both teams with victory ultimately coming to Qatar Airways & Aspire Academy – Football Dreams Africa team. This is the first time that Qatar Airways has partnered with Aspire Academy on such a project.


Relationship with QFA/ Clubs• Developed a unified activity and competition calendar for the seasons 2014-15 and 2015-16

• Organised the technical aspects of all development programmes, training and competition related to the U/23, U/19, U/17, U/15, U/13 national teams

• Collaborated in the organisation of competitions, e.g. 3rd edition of Al Kass tournament

• Hosted first ever LFP La Liga Aspire Challenge featuring two U/15 local (Aspire) teams and 10 Spanish clubs, fulfilling an MoU signed with La Liga at 2013 Doha GOALS to cooperate closely in exchanging know-how in youth development

• Offered coaching of the clubs technical staff based on the Aspire methodologies, and included them in the professional development presentation series delivered by different visiting clubs and international experts in football


The 7th Annual Graduation Ceremony 2014 witnessed 29 student-athletes graduate. The ceremony featured delivering a high quality event and audio-visual production with significant positive local media coverage.


The 8th Annual Graduation Ceremony in June 2015 marked the graduation of 30 student-athletes (15 footballers and 15 from the sport programme). This brought the overall number of graduates to 244 following their six years of sports development and high school certificate attainment.


Future PlansIn February 2015, construction started for the Football Performance Centre. Once completed, the centre will centralise performance and science facilities and methodology for the development of elite Qatari football players in Aspire Academy, Qatar Stars League and Qatar National Team Systems. This world leading facility combines cutting-edge technology with worldwide expertise enabling Qatar to operate at the forefront of training methodologies and sports science in football.

Aspetar was the Official Medical partner of Qatar Exxon Mobile Open 2015


Focus: IHF AccreditationAspetar provided medical coverage to athletes during the 24th Men’s World Handball Championship. The championship was held in Doha from the 15th of January to the 1st of February 2015. The medical services were provided through the National Sports Medicine Programme (NSMP) and reached three different venues. The World Handball Federation designated Aspetar as “IHF Reference Centre for Athlete and Referee Health” based on their experience with Aspetar medical services. This recognition makes Aspetar the first sports medicine hospital in the world to be recognised by the IHF. This event was used as preparation of Aspetar medical teams for the Qatar World Cup 2022

New Sports Medicine Concepts in Handball ConferenceAspetar hosted the ‘New Sports Medicine Concepts in Handball’ Conference on the 23rd and 24th of January at the Ladies Club in Aspire. A special issue of its Sports Medicine Journal that highlighted ‘Sports Medicine in Handball’ further demonstrated Aspetar’s leadership in treating handball injuries.

Extending Hands Over the last year, the Aspetar National Sports Medicine Programme with over 270 clinical staff members that include doctors, physiotherapists and nurses have provided medical services coverage for major sporting events in Qatar.

Last season over 350,000 hours of clinical service delivery was provided at the clubs and federations of Qatar. The work continues to support athletes across Qatar. Five new clinics opened in the summer of 2015 in Umm Salal, Al Kharaitiyat, Mesaimeer, Al Markhiyah, and Muaither. Aspetar will soon take delivery of new clinics at Al Wakra, Al Khor, and the Qatar Woman’s Sport Committee.

April 2014Ivory Coast national football team stars Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré visit Aspetar for medical treatment.

The Aspetar Medical Imaging Department commissioned its new GE 3 Tesla MRI unit on 13 April 2014. The addition of a second MRI allowed Aspetar to meet increased demand for this very important imaging service.


ResearchAspetar has been designated as an official IOC Research Centre for Prevention of Injury and Protection of Athlete Health. All research centres are encouraged to do research that supports the international athlete, focusing on injury prevention strategies, as well as efforts and advancements made in protection of the athlete health thus positively affecting the athlete performance.

Initial work by Aspetar includes research in athlete screening with the intent of moving Aspetar’s Injury and Illness Prevention Programme research and initiatives to Qatar’s clubs and federations through working with the Aspetar National Sports Medicine Programme (NSMP).

The newly added North & West buildings of Aspetar were totally covered by a highly available, reliable and secure digital communications network. The network is capable of providing uninterrupted services for all AZF IT applications that include, but not limited to, internet, voice, multimedia multicast applications and other in-house multimedia and hospital specific applications.


Expansions: North and West

North ExpansionAZF opened the North Expansion of Aspetar on the 31st of May 2015. This expansion allows for an even wider range of services at the hospital’s world-class facilities. The North Building was built as a dedicated care facility for the registered athletes of Qatar, international athletes seeking care and other resident or regional recreational athletes. Services in the building include eight outpatient clinics on the ground floor with the latest general X-ray technology and laboratory facilities in support. Athlete screening is located on the building’s first floor. Athlete screening includes extensive cardiac screening, musculoskeletal screening, dental screening, laboratory work ups, etc. with the goal of ensuring athlete health and safety during training or competition.

The Aspetar Sports Sciences Department is located on the second floor and is comprised of four services. Nutrition services focus on Aspetar inpatients and to guide athletes and teams in preparation and during competitions as well as for Qatar clubs and federations. Sports psychology services are provided for the injured athlete, post-surgery and at club level with the aim of improving performance. Physiology services and podiatry services are also available. The podiatry services use the latest gait measurement technology and orthotic manufacturing equipment (shoe orthotic inserts).

The National Sports Medicine Programme (NSMP) administration is located on the third floor. The NSMP provides support to Aspetar staff who work in the over thirty distinct clinical locations (in Qatar’s clubs and federations) and at Qatar sports venues for the many sports events that occur in Qatar each year.


West BuildingSpace in the West Building basement is identified for the Sports Surgery Training Centre and is being readied for occupation by this regionally important education service. The planned opening for phase one is the first quarter of 2016. There are potentially 30,000 beneficiaries (surgeons) of the training centre from the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. This training centre will provide world class instruction, with the surrounding GCC countries having significant interest in sending surgeons for training once operations commence.

The new West Building will house on the ground and first floor respectively, female and male rehabilitation for the non-athlete. The second floor is home for the Aspetar research and medical education departments. The third floor of the West Building has clinics now providing Exercise is Medicine services upon referral from the Aspetar outpatient department. The West building is also home for administration functions that include Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Medical Informatics, Facilities and Support Services, Procurement, Biomedical Engineering and Quality Management.


Aspetar: Nourishing a Culture of SafetyAs part of its ongoing endeavors to maintain the highest standards of patients’ safety, Aspetar held the ‘Culture of Safety’ survey, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The Aspetar patient safety grade is 96.7% compared to 97.5% for comparable AHRQ international hospitals based on bed size. The safety culture survey result is very good but Aspetar in its endeavour to be a leader in sports medicine continues to seek opportunities to become even safer. This includes improving communication systems and encouraging reporting to improve overall patient and staff safety.

In addition, remarkable footprints of Aspetar in the field of patients’ safety include the following three parameters:

1. Surgical Site Infection Rate with a world leading result of zero (0) percent for the year (April 2014 – March 2015)

2. The World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Checklist

The WHO Surgical Checklist has been implemented for all surgical cases in Aspetar. The checklist ensures each surgery is safely done. This checklist includes:

• Using the right antibiotics at the appropriate time.

• Marking the surgical site so that the right side and site are operating correctly.

• Ensuring that the right instruments are in place for the procedure.

• Ensuring the surgical team communicates effectively throughout the process.

This supports improvement in our culture of safety and aligns well with the Aspetar risk management strategy.

3. Patient Falls Assessment

A patient falls assessment determines the likelihood of a patient falling due to injury or medical condition during their stay at Aspetar. We have implemented tools to ensure that Aspetar staff and our patients and their families understand all risks for falls. We want every patient to be safe during their visit and when they return to home.

4. Medication Reconciliation

Medication reconciliation ensures that all medications are understood by both patient and caregiver by ensuring there is an up-to-date list of medications upon arrival in the hospital either as an outpatient or an inpatient. Reconciliation also occurs at discharge from the hospital. The objective is for the patient and their care provider to always know all medications that are in use to ensure the safety of the patient. The pharmacy and our physician and nursing staff along with patients and their families all make this key safety process a success.


Aspetar signed a service agreement with Qatar Football Association. The agreement covers the provision of medical treatment and services to the Qatar Amateur League (QAL) participating teams.

Aspetar and Sidra signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 24, 2015. The MoU encompasses collaboration in the provision of healthcare services for treating pediatric sports related injuries.

Collaboration for Effective Outcomes


Aspetar partnered for the fourth year with Leaders in Performance on providing medical expertise for the Sports Performance Summit in London. A highlight of the conference was the presentation by the Head of the Aspetar Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Prof Roald Bahr, on the topic of “Performance and Health: The demise of the fittest- are we destroying our most talented athletes?”


Aspetar partnered with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 20 and 21 October 2014 on a sports cardiology workshop titled ‘Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death in Elite Athletes.’

Aspetar announced a three year collaboration platform with the ‘le Tech network’ in medical research and clinical practices for the treatment of muscle and tendon injuries. Aspetar will work closely with FC Barcelona to advance the science and medical practices related to muscle and tendon injuries.


Excellence in Football Research Award at the Leading European Sports Science Congress in Sweden

Aspetar presents its First Excellence in Football Research Award in June 2015 at the Leading European Sports Science Congress in Sweden.

Orofacial Trauma in Boxing Conference Aspetar provided its medical service for the 2015 World Boxing Championship in Doha in October 2015. A conference was held on October 15th that highlighted sports dentistry in boxing and the Aspetar first aid dental kit.

By signing a three year agreement, Aspetar became the Official Medical Partner of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) until the end of the 2016-2017 football season. Under the new partnership, Aspetar will provide its expertise to PSG medical staff with regards to medical examinations and a thorough athlete health assessment for all PSG players, which will be ‘Certified by ASPETAR’, based on the highest international standards implemented by the hospital.

The Health of the Paralympic Athlete SymposiumAspetar hosted the Health of the Paralympic Athlete symposium with a focus on the future of para-athlete medical services in October 2015.

Focus

Aspire Torch Staircase Run, Featuring Towerrunning World Championships 2015For the fourth time in a row, AZF renewed its fantastic opportunity to race up the staircase of the iconic hotel, THE TORCH DOHA, in the ‘Aspire Torch Staircase Run, featuring Towerruning World Championships 2015’. The race is the only official one of its kind in the Middle East. Since it’s an international event, the setup and operation had to meet AZF standards as well as the international ones. For example, Aspire Logistics provided A/V services during the event. The sound system covered the location from the wind towers to a back door next to the VIP ramp access of the TORCH. The service was delivered successfully without any delay in any of the zones. To keep the crowds engaged with what is happening, video feeds from multiple floors were pulled through the network and displayed on different giant screens. We provided a live streaming of the race to make it one click away for anyone around the globe; a feature highly appreciated by the many international participants.

Aspire: One-stop ShopOver the last years, event management in Aspire has gone from strong to stronger in its ability to provide logistical support to events held in Aspire Zone. Following the Asian Games in 2006, Event Logistics has been able to provide the majority of its event services utilizing the legacy equipment from these games. Event Logistics is very proud to confirm that this equipment, purchased ten years ago, is still being hired out for events and still providing satisfaction to its clients.

Aspire has been always catering to the needs of event organisers, hosting local, regional and international sporting events. To facilitate the happenings, Aspire offers a full package of services, such as events and venues management, media electronic services, security and hospitality, not to mention its on-hand sports medicine team. Examples follow.

FINA World (Swimming) Short Course Championships 2014 were hosted in Hamad Aquatic Centre, Aspire Zone, from the 3rd to the 7th of December 2014. Those championships were supported by Aspetar and the NSMP through the delivery of medical care to the many athletes participating in the games.

Aspire Logistics provided 2,600 packs of water, snacks and coffee breaks during The TORCH Staircase Run that was held on March 27-28, 2015. 4,000 packs were delivered to the participants.

The Hospitality Department issued 70 temporary external catering permits between April 2014 and March 2015, while ensuring that the food and beverages prepared and served within AZF premises were safe and met the Food Safety Standards. Future Plans:The future plans aim to improve the event experience in Aspire. In the course, we will ensure the health and safety of our staff and contractors through the use of PPE (Protective and Preventative Equipment) by conducting regular and planned inspections. ‘Cost Optimisation’ is a critical measure also in the inclusion of event materials, resources and manpower costs. Our role is to ensure all costs whether direct or indirect, chargeable or FOC are captured, approved and processed for future events and operations.

Food Safety & Hygiene CommitteeAspire Logistics led the Food Safety & Hygiene Committee in collaboration with The Supreme Council of Health during the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship. More than 60 inspection visits for players’ hotels and their teams ensured food safety compliances. Food sampling ensured the health and wellbeing of the 1,120 guests of the event.


Community Engagement


The initiatives that Aspire Zone leads towards the achievement of Qatar National Vision 2030 are many. Mainly focused on the human development pillar, Aspire Zone holds physical activity events and activities, sets guidelines and runs programs to encourage the public to adopt healthy lifestyle patterns.

Focus

National Sport Day 2015 Aspire Zone united with the local community on February 11, 2015 to mark and celebrate the 4th edition of the National Sport Day with a wide range of sporting events. The day is a unique sporting festival that is observed on the second Tuesday of every February following an Emiri Decree, and an opportunity for the whole community to celebrate sports.


The celebrations saw the prominent participation of HE Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali; French Ambassador to Qatar, Eric Chevallier. The persona launched AZF’s new ‘Family Cycling’ initiative.

As well, HE Minister of Energy and Industry Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, honored the NSD celebrations at Aspire Zone with his presence.

Physical Activity GuidelinesOn the sidelines of the National Sport Day festivities in Aspire, the Qatar National Symposium on Physical Activity Guidelines was hosted to support physical activity and highlight the physical activity guidelines created by Aspetar. The symposium acted as a kick off for the Health Through Exercise national program.


Aspire Ramadan Festival: Continuing Growing Success

AZF celebrated Qatari traditions during Ramadan for 20 days in a dedicated area, called ‘Freej Aspire’. The activities were inaugurated by HE Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari, previous Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage. The opening was in the presence of Mr. Hilal Al Kuwari, AZF President, and a number of AZF personnel.

Exercise is MedicineThe festivities were doubled as Aspetar was recognised as a regional reference centre for ‘Exercise is Medicine’ through its leading Healthy Lifestyle Programme (HLP). This recognition was received from “Exercise is Medicine”, a non-profit initiative launched by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association (AMA). The initiative calls for physical activity and exercise to be standard parts of disease prevention and medical treatment. Exercise is Medicine® Qatar (EIM-Q) is a global initiative that is managed in Qatar by Aspetar and is considered one of the key components in supporting the goals and objectives of the National Health Strategy and vision of Aspetar.

Over the last period, EIM achieved the following:

• Number of EIM clinics in March 2015: 2 clinics per week and the kick off date of the clinics was the 23rd of March 2015

• Forty six (46) healthcare professionals trained during three (3) Exercise is Medicine training courses in Qatar from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.

Life in Aspire Mobile ApplicationAZF considers rapport and two-way communication with society a part of its social responsibility. It has a special importance knowing the feedback, impressions, requirements, and recommendations of the different society segments.

2015, witnessed a huge progress in AZF electronic and social media. Efforts were crowned in the end of the year by launching Life in Aspire mobile application.

The purpose of this application is to direct the users through AZF owned venues and connect them to the various Aspire service offerings. The mobile application will also mobilise the use of Aspire venues and consumption of services tagged with offers. With this initiative, Aspire Logistics will be able to identify avenues to reach the end user and build relationships. It will also gain better opportunities for promoting the Aspire brand through mobile technology.


More Healthy Lifestyle Programmes The EIM is only one initiative of HLP, as the program runs other initiatives and programmes year round to raise awareness of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle; all in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and AZF mission.

For example, the Aspetar Healthy Lifestyle Programme supports its annual ‘Fasting for Health’ campaign. The overarching aim of the multifaceted programme is to communicate with as many people as possible, both locally and regionally, to raise awareness of the importance of good health during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

In addition, HLP launched a website called ‘namat’ (namat.qa) that aims to spread the culture of health in the Arab community. The website provides expert information on various topics related to healthy lifestyle and healthy behaviours for the prevention of non-communicable diseases resulting from physical inactivity. The ‘namat’ website won the Gulf Excellence Award for Media as the best health website platform in the GCC. The announcement was made on February 5, 2015. Namat is the umbrella that covers other initiatives, including step into health (sih), a programme that helped the national community increase their physical activity on a daily basis, by supporting members of the programme to maintain a daily routine of walking 10,000 steps through recreational activity.

Furthermore, step into health Plus (sih+) was launched in 2014. It caters to various age groups and focuses on Arabic content. sih+ promotes healthy lifestyle best practices, guidelines and principles.

‘Walk the Mall’ campaign for step into health kicked off in June 2015 in the following malls: Villaggio, Dar Al Salam Mall, Landmark and Al Khor Mall. The campaign was another step by HLP to move the community towards better health through walking 10,000 steps and more a day.

Environmental Sustainability


Initiatives

Go-GreenIn line with the State of Qatar Sustainability Vision, the Cleaning Section in Aspire Logistics launched a GO GREEN Initiative. The initiative aims to reduce public and environmental exposure to toxins through improved knowledge, efforts, technology and regulation of chemicals. All will certainly assist Aspire Zone Foundation become a sustainable leader. The initiative is made out of six parts, and these are:

• Hazardous materials and toxic substances evaluation and regulation

• Paper waste recycling

• Introduction of green chemicals, eco-friendly equipment and consumables which were successfully implemented in February 2015

• Assorted waste recycling which will lead towards the vision of zero waste management

• Monitoring consumption of water used in cleaning in order to achieve conservation target. The activity started this year for roof, façade and outdoor cleaning services

• Introduction of automatic/robotic roof and façade cleaning system in order to reduce the risk involved with high rise cleaning and to conserve water (using a minimal as compared to the existing manual cleaning)

Aspire Zone Foundation staff saved around 9300 trees from April 2014 to December 2015, through recycled paper. The recycling process in Aspire started with a slow pace of 10-12 tons/month in 2011 and gradually increased to reach today an average of 50 tons/month, and it is expected to have the volume of the recycled paper doubled in 2016.

Compaction and Storage SystemAZF successfully installed and commissioned the first underground waste compaction and storage system in Qatar. Between April 2014 and March 2015, a total of 1,977.72 tons of general waste were successfully managed and stored in the underground compaction system to maintain Aspire Zone public image, while eliminating odors from generated waste. Being the only internationally certified client in the region, the cleaning and waste management services at Aspire Zone Foundation are delivered on BICSc guidelines/standard (British Institute of Cleaning Science).

Ramadan AlbumBecause Ramadan 2015 witnessed very special moments of different community members enjoying social, religious and social traditional activities, AZF presented to the public a special album documenting these special moments and memories.

Aspetar Sports Medicine JournalSeven Aspetar Sports Medicine Journals were published in the past year (April 2014 – March 2015). A targeted topic issue titled “Sports Medicine in Handball” was published by Aspetar as a lead-up to the 24th Men’s Handball Championship hosted in Doha. In addition, other issues were:

• Groin Pain in the Athlete, highlighting the important work of the Aspetar Sports Groin Pain Centre of Excellence.

• July issue focused on 4 main topics: overtraining syndrome, the role of the sports medicine physician, ACI for cartilage repair and clinical neurodynamics in rehabilitation.

• October targeted the subject of Sports Medicine in Tennis.

• December focused on the science of injury prevention training in football, shoulder injuries in swimming, acromioclavicular joint separation and surgical intervention, and injury prevention and management in sports rehabilitation.

• January targeted the topic of ‘Post-Exercise Recovery’.

• The final issue focused on the sports science of cold water immersion, monitoring of the immature athlete, surgical practice related to subscapular tendon and management of back pain by sports rehabilitation.
