LO 4.1 Explain the nature of groups and

group behaviour within organisationsIdentify and describe the nature of groups at KFC

    (informal, formal, etc.)

A group is collection of people who work together to attain a

common obecti!e. "roup beha!ior is how a team or group

beha!es with each member of the team within the team. "roup

inside an organi#ation can be classi$ed as two types% Formal and

    Informal "roups.

Formal "roups% &hese groups are supported by organi#ations

to support the organisation in di'erent kinds of work. &hemain formal groups are% epartments &eams *nits i!isions

In formal groups the sta' tends to take ownership of

responsibility and starts performing well in order to set an

e+ample in front of his peers.

&hese are groups not created within the organi#ation andthey do not ser!e any organi#ational purpose. &he informal

groups include% Friendship "roups Interest "roups upport "roups

&he informal groups gi!e some sort of recreation time to

employees to reu!enate themsel!es after work. &he peer

    • ocial identity theory is best described as a theory that

predicts certain intergroup beha!iours on the basis of

    percei!ed group status di'erences, the percei!ed legitimacy

and stability of those status di'erences, and the percei!ed

ability to mo!e from one group to another. A key assumptionin social identity theory is that indi!iduals are intrinsically

    moti!ated to achie!e positi!e distincti!eness. &hat is,

    indi!iduals 3stri!e for a positi!e selfconcept4. elfesteem is

predicted to relate to ingroup bias in two ways. Firstly,

    successful intergroup discrimination ele!ates selfesteem.

econdly, depressed or threatened selfesteem promotes

    intergroup discrimination

•5e started seeing that loyalty to a group highlights theimportance of ethical principles, so it brings people6s

attention to the fact that beha!ing ethically is the right

course of action. 5hile ostensibly a positi!e trait, we are

much more apt these days to hear about loyalty in the

conte+t of problems7loyalty to a country or religion leading

to fanatical acts of chau!inism or !iolence, loyalty to family

or friends leading to nepotism and cronyism in go!ernment,

or loyalty to coworkers or a company leading to co!erups of

$nancial chicanery or unethical dealings. &hat dichotomypresents a di8cult challenge for senior managers. &hat can

make people so loyal that when they see something wrong

they don9t bring it up, or where they are crossing ethical

boundaries for the good of their own group.

    • In organi#ational beha!ior and industrial and organi#ational

psychology, organi#ational commitment is the indi!idual9s

psychological attachment to the organi#ation. &he basis

behind many of these studies was to $nd ways to impro!e

how workers feel about their obs so that these workerswould become more committed to their organi#ations.

:rgani#ational commitment can be contrasted with other

workrelated attitudes, such as ob satisfaction, de$ned as

an employee9s feelings about their ob, and organi#ational

identi$cation, de$ned as the degree to which an employee

    e+periences a 9sense of oneness9 with their organi#ation.
