Introduction
Tanzania is endowed with numerous tourist attractions. The country’s competitive strengths in tourism lie in
the abundant and diverse wildlife, spectacular landscape and scenery, historical & archaeological sites, museums, unspoiled environment, friendly people and existing other economic activities that have potential to support the tourism sector.
In order to cope up with the current Tourism demands, the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has developed a Certificate in Tour Guiding. The program is conducted in a way that it provides current tour guiding practical skills that enable graduates to excel in tour guiding in the field, especially in the East Africa region.
Certificate in Tour Guiding
Primarily the course intends to equip secondary school leavers and other youth with necessary knowledge and
skills badly needed in making our tourism industry more competitive. The course targets individuals and other people who are already in various economic sectors including those connected or related to tourism industry. In addition, the courses will open doors for those aspiring to pursue education at diploma and degree level in field of tourism and hospitality respectively. The course combines both vocational orientation and provision of relevant practical training in the Tourism Industry to meet the pressing need of mid-career manpower.
Course Objective
The course aims to provide basic knowledge, skills, attributes and attitudes that will enable graduates to
work in tourism service providers, Governments, NGOs, local communities, the private sector and international agencies to support in the provision of tour guiding services in the tourism industry. The Certificate in Tour Guiding therefore takes both national and international tour guiding perspectives on board.
Mode of Delivery
Training approaches include lectures, interactive structured lectures, directed and self-directed study,
seminars, tutorials, student presentations, field and college-based practicals. Students participate in one academic field
trip to a selected national tourism attraction. Therefore, the course will be offered by face to face. At the moment, the classes are limited to the Headquarters of the Open University of Tanzania at Arusha and Kinondoni Regional Centre in Dar Es Salaam.
Assessment and Course AwardsStudent assessment will be based on:a) Continuous classroom assignments, presentations,
tests and exercises, b) University examinations.
The two weigh 40% and 60% respectively, whereas the practical course will be graded on “Pass” or “Failure” basis. In case of the latter, a student would either supplement or be discontinued depending whether the overall GPA is above or below 1.8 respectively.
