Multi-professional Mentor EventLisa Lawton, Practice Placement Manager, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust reports on a joint initiative to update mentors.
52 Mentors attended a joint multi-professional mentor event between Birmingham City Univeristy and Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) took place at Good Hope Hospital on October 8th. The event was two half day sessions for mentors to all undergraduate students with the Trust. The morning session included opening addresses by our senior nurses - Jo Richmond – Corporate Nurse and our Chief nurse Sam Foster.
Speakers of the day were Louise Hunt - Lead nurse for Practice, BCU, Nick Gee - Senior Lecturer, Disability Tutor- BCU and Ruth Gilks – Practice Placement Manager, HEFT.
Louise presented her PHD research in relation to failing students and the reasons why this may be happening and what is needed to change this culture within Nursing and other allied health professional s worldwide. The delegates discussed, shared and debated their own practical experiences with each other.
Nick Gee, Disabilities Tutor, Faculty of Health reports on this achievement...
Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health have become the first Faculty of a UK University to be awarded Dyslexia Friendly accreditation by the British Dyslexia Association (BDA).
The project to become accredited with the BDA involved a thorough review and evaluation of the Faculty’s policies, procedures and support mechanisms, and included several stakeholder events.
Consultation between staff, students, and practice partners contributed to the success of the project and over 180 dyslexic students provided feedback on their experience of receiving support and accessing resources within the Faculty.
The verification process included two verifiers from the BDA spending a whole day within the Faculty, consulting with stakeholders and reviewing over a dozen folders of evidence which had been compiled over a period of two years to meet the exacting standards required for accreditation.
The Faculty’s Learning and teaching resources, along with its enabling and supportive culture and environment were particularly commended in the BDA’s findings.
Faculty of Health Disability Tutor, Nick Gee, who led the project said “I am delighted that we have been recognised for the support and resources we provide for all our students, including dyslexic students. I would like to thank everybody who was involved with the steering group, and took part in the stakeholder consultations”
The Faculty’s accredited status cements their position at the forefront of providing excellent support for their students, and already there are other projects in the pipeline to follow on from this success.
The Faculty of Health currently holds Dyslexia friendly accredited status until 2016 when a revalidation event will take place.
Nick explored disability what it means and how we can support students in practice.
His presentation was lively and enthusiastic and he used relevant and pertinent examples that the audience were able to link with.
The Final speaker of the day, Ruth, discussed the issues that mentors face whilst facing the struggling student and used examples of when issues were not raised. Some of them highlighted the need for mentors to raise their concerns and use the support networks around them to support themselves and each other through the process of assessment. This in turn enables a standard for the quality of our future workforce and the public are protected.
This buzz around the venue during the networking coffee time demonstrated that mentors are engaging in the process and were sharing good practice experiences as well as widening their support networks across not only the organisation but externally and across professions as this is an issue for all.
All 52 delegates from across the professions that attended are now updated and maintain their live mentor status on the Trust database and have evidence for their triennial review.
Congratulations to the following practice placements and student nurses whose achievements were recognised and celebrated at this event.
