As we turn the page towards 2021, leaving behind the most disruptive year for our generation, it is with great pleasure that from Funds Society we can contribute to some normalcy presenting the fifth edition of our Asset Manager’s Guide NRI, a comprehensive list of asset management firms providing UCITS investment solutions to investment professionals in the wealth management non resident industry.
For once in recent history, neither the financial sector nor the markets have been the source of this crisis. On the contrary, banks and investment firms have been part of the solution. 2020 brought important mergers in the asset management industry, but so did the previous year and the one before. The relevance of having local business development teams in a year when traveling has been nearly impossible has probably accelerated new deals with distributors that are gaining weight in the industry. Technology has helped us do the rest, and between zoom meetings and virtual summits, asset management firms have been able to conduct business in an ‘almost normal’ fashion. It is also necessary to point out another trend that has been identified recently by a survey conducted by CFA Institute as one of the most important for the coming decade: Sustainable Investing. We are finally investing the way we live, hoping to make this world a better place for the generations to come, while producing at the same time healthy returns for our clients. And the good news is that each day this is more a demand-driven trend, and less a regulatory imposition.

Muzinich & Co. was founded in New York in 1988, and in 2020 it has been 30 years since we first allocated to the then nascent US high yield market. Since then, we have expanded to cover almost every asset class across the corporate credit spectrum – from investment grade, high
yield, emerging markets, absolute return strategies, to syndicated loans and direct financing of companies. Most importantly, in these three decades we have not changed our management style and we remain true to our investment principles. The basic notions of risk control, i.e. analysis and diversification, remain the pillars of our business.

We believe there is much greater value in assessing the relative strength and direction of economic variables than there is in providing specific statistical point forecasts.
Furthermore, we acknowledge that the financial services industry already provides an enormous volume of material analysing the global economy. For this reason, we try to focus on those areas that we believe are less well researched and where there is greater potential for us to add value.
We continuously monitor the world’s major economies, their policy pronouncements and data to see if events are unfolding as expected or if our views are being challenged and update our analysis accordingly.
Most analysts have access to similar information. However, significant value can be added by digging more deeply into that information set. Doing so helps to confirm the authenticity of our information as well as offering the opportunity to reach new conclusions.
The conclusions we reach inform our asset allocation process, which in turn influences both the research mandates of our analysts and how our portfolio managers allocate.
