Appendix 1: Methodology

This Asset Map was created as follows:

• The parameters of the report were supplied by the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorders Alliance (CASDA)

•• Initial information was supplied by:

– Cynthia Carroll, Executive Director, Autism Nova Scotia; Chair, CASDA Board of Directors; Co-Director Canadian Autism Partnership Project (CAPP)

– Margaret Whelan, Co-Director, CAPP

• Information on researchers and research projects across Canada (as well as their associated funding, where available) were obtained for the past 5 years (2010/11 to 2015/16) and, in some cases, into the future from the websites of:

– Canada Foundation for Innovation (www.innovation.ca/projects/index.cfm)

– Canadian Institutes of Health Research (www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/826.html)

– Genome Canada (www.genomecanada.ca/en/portfolio/project/health.aspx; www.genomecanada.ca/en/portfolio/project/technologies.aspx; http://genomereports.ca/section.php?Lang=En&ID=3&Nav=Section)

– Networks of Centres of Excellence (www.nce-rce.gc.ca/NetworksCentres-CentresReseaux/NCE-RCE_eng.asp)

– Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) (http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/ase-oro/index_eng.asp)

– Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) (http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/results-resultats/award_search-recherche_attributions/index-eng.aspx)

– Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca) – MSFHR (Michael Smith Foundation for Health

Research: www.msfhr.org)

• Searches of publically available funding databases were conducted using the search terms: “autism”,” autisme”, “autism spectrum disorder”, “aspergers”

• Information on research resources was also obtained from individual organization/association websites including the websites of the national autism charities:

– Autism Canada Foundation (www. autismcanada.org/) – Autism Society of Canada (www.autismsocietycanada.

ca/) – Autism Speaks (www.autismspeaks.org) – Autism Speaks Canada (www.autismspeaks.ca/) – Canadian National Autism Foundation (www.cnaf.

net/) – Simons Foundation (www.thesimonsfoundation.ca)

• Sinneave Foundation (www.theabilityhub.org/about/sinneave-foundation)

• Additional information was obtained by Google searches of Canadian universities, hospitals and research centres using the search term “autism”.

• Key researchers were deemed to be those who had received significant in funding over the last five years, were endowed Chairs, or were heads of research centres or networks, or Faculty members of ART. In terms of funding, given the disparity in the average size of grants awarded by the Tri-Council agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC), the following formula was used: CIHR ( over $1,000,000); NSERC and SSHRC (over $50,000)

• For research funding analyses, information obtained from all the aforementioned websites was entered into a master Excel spreadsheet. Data were checked for relevance to this project: studentship (undergraduate, Master’s, Doctoral) and postdoctoral projects were included in the analysis but funds for projects held by non-Canadians were deleted; and researchers’ location and activities were checked against their websites to ensure they worked in the research areas covered by this Asset Map and were still residents of Canada. Researchers’ specialties were determined from their funded projects and websites.

Page 4: Asset Map of Resources for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD ...2 Asset Map of Resources for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Research in Canada • In terms of researcher funding, dollar

Asset Map of Resources for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Research in Canada2

• In terms of researcher funding, dollar amounts were generally only available from federal databases: CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, NCE, CRC, Genome Canada. CRC funding was calculated according to the number of years a researcher had been a CRC at $100,000/yr for 5 years for a Tier 2 researcher and $200,000/year for Tier 1 researcher.

• Canada Research Chairs(CRC) - CRC holders were identified by a search of the CRC database using the keyword “autism”. Chairholders were validated for relevance to ASD through a search of their grants and publications specifically related to ASD. Only those with clear connections to the ASD field were included in the Asset Map.

• For NCE funding, only the proportion of network funding estimated from the NCE website to be specific for ASD research was factored into financial commitments. As NCEs are national networks, an estimate was made of the ASD-specific funding likely to be spent in BC research institutions. In the specific case of NeuroDevNet, it was estimated from the Network website that approximately 30% of the Network funding was going towards ASD research.

• The data for each relevant researcher were categorized according to institution and key research areas. When

key research institutes had been identified from this categorization, the websites of those institutes were checked to locate other researchers that may have been missed.

• Researcher analyses were conducted in Excel to determine researcher numbers, expertise, and government funding according to institution; and key researchers according to the amount of funding obtained.

This report was produced for CASDA by Dr Judy Bray of Judy Bray Consulting.

Note: The data and information contained in this report are believed to be reliable and accurate up to September 16th, 2016 but are not guaranteed for completeness or accuracy.

• studying combinations of fluorescence imaging, molecular biology, and electrophysiology to investigate how nerve cells communicate.

• identifying molecular signals on the surface of nerve cells that induce contacting partners to form a synaptic connection. Mutations in one of these molecular cues has recently been linked to autism.

• understanding how neurotransmitter receptors are localized and modified to control the strength of synaptic signalling between nerve cells.
