What is GIS ? In brief, GIS is a computer-based platform to link

graphical features and tabular data; it allows for analysis of the data.

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for

mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic

analysis benefits offered by maps. (ESRI)

GIS Simplified

G I S G = Geographical I = Information

S = System

Most focus on the “G” and not the “I” “I” component can be viewed as one of the most critical pieces

of a GIS system. Normally we can all find a valve, manhole, pump or control

panel; the “G” component.

The benefits of “I” is it gives you information about the item you cannot see by looking at the object.

GIS Benefits

• Assists in controlling operational costs • Maximizes system resources • Minimizes system downtime • Provides information to make smart

operational decisions • Allows Flexibility to be enhanced with system

growth and changes • Assists in developing Capital Improvement

Plan • Tracks operational issues and improvements

Existing Data

• Federal, State, County, and Local Datasets • Construction Documents • As-Built Documents • Submittal Drawings • Work Orders • Maintenance Records • Construction Inspection Reports • Vector and Raster Data • Field Photos

Field Collection & Verification

• Survey Level Data • Hand-Held GPS Units

• Varying Cost and Precision

• “Old School” Measurements • System & Plant Personnel • O&M Manuals • This effort can be tailored based on the desired use of the data. • American Structurepoint currently has the ability to provide Survey

Grade GPS, Mapping Grade GPS, and field inspection services. – Survey Grade GPS Units: 2, sub-centimeter accuracy – Mapping Grade Units : 13, sub-meter accuracy

Placing Data

• ACAD and Microstation Drawings • Base Background Data

• Roads, Streams, Rivers, Etc. • Developer Drawings

– Develop Digital Submission Standards

• Raster • Aerial Photos and Scans

• Database • Excel and Access, Etc.

• Hyperlinks • Word, PDF, Work Orders, Field Photos, Etc.

GIS Interface - Office

• Data Entry • Data Management & Updates • Single Point for Data Access • Analyze Systems • Customer Data

Page 11: Assets and GIS - American Structurepoint...Aug 01, 2012  · A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer -based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events

GIS Interface - Field • Map Books • Data Published to Laptop for On-Site Use

ArcReader, AccuGlobe, Etc. • Varying Levels of Software to Allow “On the

Fly” Edits and Observations • Asset Records at the Field Personnel's

Fingertips • With introduction of mobile elements, it allows

for real-time edits and comments • Ability to push out to mobile devices such as

iPhone, iPad, and Droid products
