Editing of film or video material is an essential part of any audio-visual production. Without the process of removing, adding and manipulating source material, all film and video would have to be shot in sequence and without mistakes.The process of editing involves making creative decisions about source material. It provides an opportunity for the creativity of the filming stage to be continued through to the finished product.Learners will be able to experiment with editing processes and use their skills in the production of their own film production. They should learn that editing is not merely a technical process, but also an aesthetic one and they should be able to demonstrate this understanding through both their practice and the articulation of principles.OverviewThis assignment aims to develop learners’ skills in short film production using the moving image and sound technologies currently employed in the industry. It will develop learners’ understanding of how visual and audio sequences communicate ideas and information and develop their technical skills in film production. This assignment is designed to develop learners’ ability to underpin knowledge and understanding of a range of film and video editing techniques.

Scenario

BRIEFStudents are to work in teams to devise, shoot and edit a ’10 minute film’ on a social action and the community project. The purpose of this project is to let you experiment with the camera to record video and audio material and to gain knowledge and skills of how to combine visuals and audio to produce a film narrative. It is also about getting to know the Applemac Computer Suite to edit using either Final Cut pro 7.2 or Adobe Premier C6.Be as creative and resourceful to make an interesting film production. It is important that you gain knowledge and skills in using the camera to capture vision and audio and develop an understanding of the technology and processes involved in editing. Produce a portfolio of work that deals with learning three outcome and reference material that is appropriate for each assessment criteria being covered up to distinction level in this film assignment. Refer to portfolio of evidence included with assignment brief.

Name: ________________________________________Please provide a written comment that deals with all the italicized tasks below. You don’t need to write about all of listed content but it essential that you write about a minimum of two of the sub headings for the learning outcomes.Unit content LO1. UNDERSTAND THE DEVELOPMENT AND PRINCIPLES OF EDITING LO1.1 Development: in-camera editing

In-Camera Editing is a technique where, instead of editing the shots in a film into sequence after

shooting, the director and cameraperson instead shoots the sequences in order. The resulting 'edit' is

therefore already complete when the film is developed.

There was one time in which I used this method, it was not a part of a project with this course, it was

part of another outside course that I was taking part in. As we had very little camera and editing

equipment we had to use this technique in order to get the best result possible.

following the action

When there is a big scene for example a car chase a camera on a tripod doesn't work in order to shoot

this scene so a camera needs to be able to move. There is different equipment used to film scenes like

these. A dolly shot or tracking shot is when a cart is on a track and is then moved along it to record a

shot. The camera is mounted on the cart to film all the footage. Most dollies also have the ability to

move vertically to capture footage that maybe high up or in some cases they can be fitted with cranes

so footage at a higher level can be captured easily and successfully. This method is normally used in

high budget action films and takes a good bit of time to set up and pull off. When using a crane to get

the shot it also adds to the cost of the making of the film.

multiple points of view

shot variation;

Manipulation of diegetic time and spaceManipulation of diegetic time and space is when an edit is made to make it seem like a person, environment or object is changing over a period of time,it gives the appearance of the person or environment aging, getting older or younger looking. This is used is many different films, it allows the audience to see a time changed visibly. Even though I myself have not used this technique a good example of this in use would be ‘The Time Turner scene’ from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban film. ; film, video; analogue; digital.

Task 1. Provide a written report to explain your understanding of the above media terms, also provide written details about camera and audio equipment you use to record production work. P1 M1 D1

LO1.2 Purposes: storytelling, eg engaging the viewer, development of drama, relationship to genre, creating motivation; combining shots into sequences; creating pace.

Task 2. Describe how the above media terms are important to moving image productions. Give an account of you are intending to employ editing techniques and processes to tell your story? P1 M1 D1

LO1.3 Conventions and techniques: Seamless 'Seamless' is a technique used in the editing process, it is the transition between shots that make up an entire scene. Using the seamless technique is the idea of editing in film and t.v being 'invisible art' meaning that the editing is something that is not noticed because of the good quality.

continuity;

motivatedThe motivated editing technique is a simple way to transition from one shot, to the next shot. Making a natural looking shot can be tricky, the best way to make an edit look good is to make a motivated edit because it is not jumpy and will not affect the audience and how it is viewed.

MontageMontage is a technique in film making where a number of short shots are taken and editied into a sequence to condensed sections of time and information. It is normally used to suggest the passage of time but can also be used for things such as music videos. During this course I have used this technique in order to show different shots and pictures that were taken during the set up before and after filming to show the progress of filming set up.

jump-cuttingJump cutting is a cut in film editing when two shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly. This type of edit causes the subject of the shots to appear to "jump" position in a discontinuous way. I myself have not yet used this technique myself there is a lot of good examples where this technique has been used to its full advantage.

parallel editingParallel editing is a technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a single place, where the relevant parties confront each other. Parallel editing is often referred to as cross cutting.

180o ruleThe 180-degree rule of shooting and editing keeps the camera on one side of the action. As a matter of convention, the camera stays on one side of the axis of action throughout a scene; this keeps characters grounded compositionally on a particular side of the screen or frame, and keeps them looking at one another when only one character is seen onscreen at a time. The technique allows for an expansion of the frame into the unseen space offscreen. It is referred to as a rule because the camera, when shooting two actors, must not cross over the axis of action; if it does, it risks giving the impression that the actors' positions in the scene have been reversed.

; splicing; transitions, eg cut, dissolve, fade, wipe; cutaways; point of view shot; shot-reverse-shot; providing and withholding information; editing rhythm; crosscutting; cutting to soundtrack.
