Dear residents and families, Happy holidays to each and every one of you! We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all our residents and families – especially those who have recently filled out our annual quality survey. As you know, this survey helps us see what things we are doing well and what areas need some improvement, both company-wide and here at the community level. Now that we have all your responses, the real work begins! We will gather your answers and analyze them, looking for trends that can help us form a performance improvement plan for the upcoming year. Once this plan is formulated, with concrete next steps on how we can address any issues, we will present the plan to you and ask for your feedback! Stay tuned for more information on this event, which will take place early next year. In the meantime, if you have any issues or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me or our quality department at [email protected]. And thank you again for helping us make our community an amazing place to live! Stay Safe: Cold Weather and Fall Prevention

The holidays should be about togetherness and cheer, but an unanticipated fall can quickly ruin this happy time of year. With the cold weather and icy conditions outside, it’s especially important to stay vigilant and do everything you can to prevent falls – both inside and out. Make sure you have the proper shoes. Good traction is essential, so check the heels and soles of your boots and shoes to ensure they are in good condition. You may also want to consider special anti-

skid shoes to further prevent slips and falls. When coming inside, clean off your shoes to get rid of any excess snow or ice. Be careful when getting into or out of vehicles. Hold securely to a door or another person to avoid slipping. Stay active. Maintaining strong muscles and bones is an important component of preventing falls. Consider joining an indoor walking group or one of our fitness classes.

Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D and calcium, which are critical to keeping your bones and muscles healthy and strong.

Going gluten-free doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your favorite baked goods this holiday season. Even if you are just trying to limit your intake of white flour (which is heavily processed and low in nutritional benefits), there are an array of other options you can choose, depending on your needs. Nut-based flours are some of the most popular alternative flours, and they

are great for Christmas cookies! Almond flour is a common choice, but chestnut, walnut and filbert flours are also good options. Legume flours, like soy, chickpea, fava bean and peanut, are a good source of protein, iron, zinc and magnesium. Chickpea flour, for instance, can be great in a chocolate chip cookie! Seed flours are another great option. Buckwheat

can be used for things like crepes, pancakes and tarts, while millet can be used in combination with regular flours for muffins and breads.

  • wç Casino Night

Residents, family members and staff enjoyed our Casino Night on November 13. We had roulette, blackjack, the wheel of chance, and card bingo. We also enjoyed a delicious buffet which included “dice brownies”.

Clockwise from top left: Residents place their bets at the roulette table. Margaret, one of our big winners, shows off her hot cocoa basket. Frankie deals blackjack. Norma tests her luck at the “wheel of chance.”

  • Honoring our Veterans

Bethany Shuda helped us honor our veterans with a patriotic sing-along. It definitely brought back memories hearing the Battle Hymn of the Republic and each military branch’s song.
