PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This position is responsible for: - 1 The provision of co-ordination and management across the Critical Care Complex (CCC) for both Nursing and support staff by;
Providing clinical co-ordination and management of all patients across Critical Care Complex
Ensuring the effective daily operations of the Critical Care Complex; The effective management of resources Efficient management within budget Managing toward achievement of the performance objectives of Critical Care Complex Working towards achievement of the performance objectives of the Critical Care
Complex and Acute Care Service
2 Ensuring the provision of the highest quality of nursing care for patients The effective performance of this position requires each individual Associate clinical Nurse Manager (ACNM) to exhibit consistent behaviour and superior communications in carrying out this role, both within the Critical care Complex and also across the wider organisation. A collegial and strong working relationship will be required amongst all members of the clinical charge nurse/charge nurse, educator team and between the team and the Nurse Manager.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide clinical leadership within the Critical Care Complex

Act as an effective role model by demonstrating high level of speciality clinical competence
Be responsible for the assessment, planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of nursing care and practice within the speciality.
Maintain a global view of activity within CCC, while working closely with medical staff to ensure safe and timely delivery of patient care
Provide clinical and professional support to promote an inter-disciplinary approach to the provision of patient care, that allows for adequate preparation for admission and discharge planning
Ensure culturally appropriate patient care by assisting staff to understand the diverse needs of CMH population and by liaising with the relevant cultural unit to provide support
Develop and maintain effective networks and partnerships with other senior nurses within the wider organisation as well as within Critical Care Complex
Work with the Nurse Manager and Nurse Educator to ensure that Critical Care services are provided in a consistent and co-ordinated manner
Assume delegated responsibility for validating One-Staff timesheets and coordinate Oracle ordering as required
Use expert knowledge and skills to assist staff as needed, including ethical and professional issues as they arise
Demonstrate ability to access and use available clinical information systems
In collaboration with the quality coordinator of CCC, actively participate in implementing and monitoring continuous quality improvement activities
To provide clinical co-ordination and management within the Critical Care Complex by:

Co-ordinate bed management, patient and staff allocation based on available staff mix ensuring clinical safety within Critical Care Complex (ICU & HDU) through the use of WIMS and working cooperatively with Middlemore Central.
Establishment and maintenance of standards of practice/protocols/policies and ensure expectations are clearly communicated to staff
o Ensure appropriate and safe arrangements are made for internal and external high acuity transfers
o Ensure medical and nursing staff adhere to Organisational and Critical Care guidelines
o Ensure staff maintain accurate and up to date documentation at all times
o Coordinate admissions in consultation with On-Call Consultant including transfer of patients to other units
o Assist and provide patient care as required
To promote and facilitate excellent Clinical Practice
Promote innovative and creative clinical nursing practice and ensure it is validated with best practise and research activities
Initiate and/or contribute to forums that critique current practice and debate topical issues
Promote a patient focussed approach implement and promote initiatives which improve patient outcomes

To effectively manage resources within the Unit
In partnership with the Nurse Manager, is responsible for the provision of a roster with an appropriate and balanced skill mix to cover clinical workload ensuring that the reflect the unit needs and meet employment contract requirements
Promote cost effective nursing practice by proactive use of resources with the CCC
Be responsible for the daily revision of completed staff allocation plans, on daily revision of completed appropriate levels of cover and skill mix
Be responsible after hours for ensuring that OneStaff accurately reflects the current workforce rostered
Be responsible for matching workforce requirements to workload and will liaise with the Middlemore Central as required to seek assistance or deploy as appropriate
Be responsible for ensuring that all meal breaks are taken within the MECA timeframes at all times
Be responsible for ensuring the cost effective use of equipment and supplies and for ensuring that equipment/stocks/supplies are readily available and maintained, working with the Stock Controller CCC
Manage day-to-day trouble shooting/problem solving as issues arise within the shift

Clinical Trial group – research projects Situations may often call for tact, diplomacy and will require information to be handled in a discreet and sensitive manner. In conflict situations will be required to exercise sound judgement, negotiation and persuasiveness skills, toward facilitating a workable outcome.
PROBLEM COMPLEXITY
The ACNM will be regularly challenged by problems of a varied nature on a day-to-day basis within
their clinical area. These may include problems related to a wide variety of issues across/within
the Critical Care Unit and will require communication, negotiation and collaboration with
nursing/midwifery/medical colleagues and a range of other clinical and non-clinical staff. The
ACNM will be expected to actively contribute (as part of the CCC Management Team) to ongoing
planning and practice development.
A key function of the ACNM will be the day-to-day co-ordination and management of safe levels of
staffing/skill mix and bed management during her/his shift. In consultation with the Senior
Medical Staff and senior and nursing colleagues, the ACNM may limit planned and/or pending
admissions as per agreed protocol or guidelines.
Will be regularly challenged by a wide range of clinical and workforce issues. There will be a requirement to be able to prioritise issues and negotiate time frames, while still providing a quality customer service. The range of problems will be diverse and require solutions customised to meet the circumstances of the client. Therefore opportunities will arise to provide innovative options to the client based on proven outcomes.

There will be demands to meet deadlines, maintain accuracy and quality of information. Failure to do so could impact on the organisation in terms of patient staff and safety. SCOPE FOR ACTION The ACNM will be empowered to make decisions related to their specific clinical area and staff.
Recommendations related to service decisions will be made in collaboration with the Nurse
Manager, CCC, Clinical Leader, and Clinical Nurse Director.
The ACNM is expected to use problem-solving skills to develop innovative approaches to issues on
a day-to -day basis and recommend strategies and solutions for ongoing practice development.
Problem solving will require prioritising and negotiating timeframes while still providing a quality
customer driven service. Consultation will be required across the service and division and be
related to both clinical and professional domains.
Discretion is required to be exercised in releasing confidential information to the appropriate parties.
DIMENSION OF THE POSITION
Will be responsible to the Nurse Manager, CCC for the achievement of agreed objectives and
operates within the confines of Counties Manukau Health. For additional professional support a
reporting line is to the Clinical Nurse Director.
