PTC is hiring an Associate Dramaturg starting mid-September, 2016. This is a contract position with specific responsibilities and a semi- flexible schedule extending over a year. About you The Associate Dramaturg develops the winning project for the Fringe New Play Prize 2017, including the selection, process design and collaboration with the lead artist(s). You will also manage PTC’s Block programs, liaising with the Block Leaders and welcoming new participants into the company. You are a theatre maker with at least 4 years of post-training experience. You are a collaborator who is also capable of independent work, with experience in both development and production dramaturgy, including script analysis in relationship to production design, as well as aspects of producing (scheduling, resource allocation). You are interested in the larger Vancouver theatre ecology and in making and maintaining connections to community, especially to emerging artist communities. You have basic administrative skills (scheduling, participant management, payment schedules). About the job Dramaturgy – Fringe New Play Prize PTC and the Vancouver Fringe Festival have offered a Fringe New Play Prize for four years. Each year, the project chosen has been different – from collectively devised pieces in process to a text-based shows for one to four actors. The submissions are in the form of a script fragment or idea, a production plan and artist resumes. The Associate Dramaturg will help select the 2017 winner (along with PTC Dramaturg Kathleen Flaherty and Fringe AED David Jordan). In January, once the winner is announced, there will be an analysis phase, a process design phase, followed by weekly meetings developing into workshops, script work, and
eventually rehearsal visits. As the main PTC liaison with this project, the Associate Dramaturg is also responsible for including the Communications Manager in community engagement and promotional opportunities. The Associate Dramaturg will take on this project in consultation, as required, with PTC Dramaturg Kathleen Flaherty. Management of PTC Block Programs PTC offers a series of Block Programs to emerging writers (Block A), for writers to self-produce (Block P) and to dramaturgs (Block D). Members apply to the programs, which are curated to create small diverse cohorts with similar goals and needs. The Associate Dramaturg will assist with the continual evolution of the form of the blocks and manage the community engagement, application process, intake, and administration of the Blocks, including submission calls, scheduling, contracting of facilitators, communications with participants, and evaluation. The Associate Dramaturg completes administration in conjunction with the Operations Manager, and develops and executes community engagement and communications in collaboration with the Communications Director and the Dramaturg. A familiarity with Excel, data bases and online sharing platforms is essential.
