REPORT OF THE CPDD HUMAN RESEARCH COMMITI’EE

The purpose of the Human Research Committee (HRC) is to foster and support human research on drug abuse. Members of the committee include Leslie Amass, Kathleen Brady, Roland Griffith, Tom Kosten, Roy Pickens (Chair), John Roache, Maxine Stitzer, Harriet de Wit, and Ed Sellers (ex officio). Griffith, Kosten, Pickens, Stitzer, and Sellers are CPDD Board members, and Amass, Brady, Roche, and de Wit are CPDD regu- lar members.

Recently the HRC prepared a report for the CPDD Board of Directors on human subject issues in research involving the administration of drugs with abuse poten- tial to human subjects. The report noted that this methodology is sometimes employed in research to learn more about the causes and consequences of drug abuse and to develop new treatments for drug dependence. The methodology is also employed in research outside the drug abuse field, including efforts to better unders- tand basic mechanisms in pain, sleep, appetite, intestinal functioning, anxiety, depression, and other problem areas. The report discusses human subject issues that are relevant to this type of research (e.g., obtaining in- formed consent, minimizing risks, assessing risk-benefit ratio, compensation) and describes safeguards that have been established to protect human subjects who serve in these studies.

At the forthcoming CPDD meeting in Scottsdale, the HRC will hold a special session to discuss issues relevant to the implementation of the new NIH guidelines on in- clusion of women and minorities as subjects in clinical research. All interested persons are invited to attend and participate. Date, time, and location of the session will be announced at the CPDD meeting. Comments are welcomed from CPDD members on other clinical research issues the HRC may address.
