MISSION: To foster collaboration among all stakeholders and facilitate new technological developments and innovations in the context of digitization (‘Industry 4.0’) and thereby to find sustainable solutions to challenges faced by companies, research institutions and society as a whole.

The Platform facilitates the implementation of digital transformation in Austria and unifies the Industry 4.0 community. It aims to secure and create highly innovative industrial production and to boost quality employment, thus strengthening Austria’s future competitiveness.

The Platform considers Industry 4.0 a societal challenge that• can only be addressed by collaboration of industry, science, regional and national policy makers, associations, trade unions

and NGOs• is driven by technological innovation, new business models, knowledge transfer and its widespread socially acceptable de-

ployment and implementation

OBJECTIVES AND TASKS OF THE PLATFORM:• to leverage interests between industry, science, policy makers, employers and employees associations • to accompany the processes of change driven by digitalisation• to provide knowledge and services on Industry 4.0 to companies, academia, RTOs and to the general public • to define fields of action and to advise policy makers• to develop joint strategies with high leverage on Industry 4.0• to launch initiatives to steer regional, national and international activities• to enable the exchange of experience, best practices, data and studies

All members have the opportunity to contribute to Industry 4.0-related topics in working groups. These groups meet regularly and use transparent process strategies and roadmaps to produce best practice exchange and position papers.

WORKING GROUP PILOT FACTORIESPilot factories are simulations of a real factory; a lab situation with real machines and logistics systems. They provide an au-thentic and neutral test and research environment for companies to conduct in near-real conditions and perform analyses without interrupting the production process. The working group, together with the industry, the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, has compiled the main focal points for further pilot factories with the aim to strengthen Austrian industrial potential. The following Industry 4.0 key technologies were identified: smart electronic based systems, discrete manufacturing and process engineering. After having established the first pilot factory in Aspern-Vienna, the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology will finance a second appeal for three further pilot factories in Austria in 2017/2018.

WORKING GROUP NORMS AND STANDARDSThe real and the virtual world need a common language and interface to communicate and to link up in terms of Industry 4.0. This means that co-ordinated norms and standards are needed, so that the different systems belonging to different manu-facturers can communicate with each other. The aim of the working group is to raise awareness of the significance of norms and standards, to provide information about Industry 4.0 relevant norms and standards, and to give assistance to companies for their product development processes. The platform has compiled an Industry 4.0 Standardization Compass that offers a compact overview about available norms and standards and those in progress concerning Industry 4.0. In addition an online Industry 4.0 norm catalogue is available on www.plattformindustrie40.at.

WORKING GROUP RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATIONThe working group identifies fields of action and targeted measures for research, development and innovation in order to increase Austrian competences in technologies in reference to Industry 4.0. In order to achieve Austrian leadership, the group is pursuing the “strengthen strengths” approach. The working group will develop an RD&I Roadmap by mid-2017 which will identify Industry 4.0 – relevant research fields. Recommendations for continuous improvements of public funding instruments will also be included. Furthermore, the working group focuses on data and ICT-driven business models.

WORKING GROUP QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS FOR INDUSTRY 4.0Industry 4.0 changes requirements for qualification and competencies. The aim of the working group is to find ways of con-tinuous training and education to meet growing demands resulting from Industry 4.0 for employees and job-seekers as well as young people in training. The group focuses on identifying key qualifications and competencies necessary for Industry 4.0, digital infrastructure in training and education, digital skills of teachers and the recognition of non-formally and informally acquired competences. A position paper will be presented by mid-2017.

WORKING GROUP REGIONAL STRATEGIESThe main focus of the working group is the establishment of a structured exchange between regional stakeholders and the federal government with the aim to facilitate joint projects. The first joint initiative being promoted by the Platform is the Austrian-wide roll-out of an “Industry 4.0-Check” for companies, which was developed by the “Mechatronic Cluster Upper Austria” and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. This tool helps companies to evaluate their current status regar-ding Industry 4.0 and to identify potential areas for improvement. A second focus is on “Smart Specialization”, with the aim to further strengthen regional strengths and to foster collaboration between regions.

WORKING GROUP THE HUMAN IN THE DIGITAL FACTORYThe main focus of the working group is the employee and his/her changing needs in the digital working environment. The group identifies the main issues of the digital work space, provides information and develops strategies to support employers and employees. Current themes are: organisation of work, data protection, arrangement on operational level, working hours, health and operational security. The thesis paper “Labour Organisation”, finalised in February 2017, includes macro economic effects of digitization on the job market, the human-machine cooperation, working hours, in-plant organisation, qualification and skills in digitized production, new working forms and data privacy protection.

WORKING GROUP SMART LOGISTICSProduction-related logistics is an essential part of digital value-chains delivering materials to production facilities and products to the customers on time. The working group compiles best practice examples for the integration of logistic suppliers, software providers and users and additionally focuses on business models and logistics-related training.
