California Specific Exam One item on the December 2, 2005 Board for Geologists and Geophysicists Meeting agenda is the report on the results of the focus group formed to study the effectiveness of the California Specific Exam. At the April 29, 2005 BGG Meeting, Matt Hawley and I testified in favor of retaining the CSE. This position was based on a rather contentious email exchange between a select group of individuals, and on an informal email survey of members of the Southern California Section of AEG in March 2005, to which about 60 members responded (Curiously, the same number of members who voted in our Section election. Hmmmmm). Dr. Tracy Montez of the Office of Examination Resources recommended forming a focus group to study the effectiveness of the CSE, and what could be done to improve it should it be determined that the exam does have value. At the follow-up May 20 BGG meeting a motion was passed to establish a focus group as stated in the meeting minutes: “to adopt Dr. Montez’ recommendation for a focus group, facilitated by an OER-approved test development expert, to evaluate the current scope of Professional Geologist practice in relation to the 2000 Occupational Analysis, entry-level standards for competent and safe practice, and consumer protection.” A request for volunteers to submit their resumes/CVs to the Board for consideration for the focus group scheduled to meet on October 6 & 7, 2005 was issued and reiterated in the June AEG So Cal Section Newsletter. A summary of the discussions during the May 20 BGG meeting about the pros and cons of the CSE are presented in the minutes at: http://www.geology.ca.gov/meetings/minutes/20050520_bdmn.pdf. Which brings us to where we are today. The focus group convened on October 6 and 7, 2005, and the results and details of this meeting will be discussed at the Dec 2 BGG Meeting. I’ll be attending that meeting and will report the results back to you. Membership Update While you’re verifying that AEG has your correct email address, click the “Continue to Renewal” button and renew your membership for 2006. Our records show that more than half of the southern California Section members have not yet renewed their membership. Renewing your membership when you receive your first notice reduces AEG’s expenses by not having to send out repeat notices, and provides funds to your Section for their operations. BGG News Effective January 1, 2006 the title “Registered Geophysicist” will change to “Professional Geophysicist” as a result of Governor Schwarzenegger’s signing of SB 228 (Figueroa). The notice on the Board’s web site states: “The Board strongly recommends that licensed Professional Geophysicists incorporate the new name change into their stamps, letterheads, business cards and other appropriate identification methodologies. OVERVIEW OF THE SYMPOSIUM The goal of this symposium is to provide engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, and government professionals with the opportunity to exchange information on state-of-the-art practices in landslide investigation, analysis, and mitigation. The symposium will consist of invited speakers, contributed papers, and poster sessions. Although the theme of the symposium is landslides, papers on all engineering geology and geotechnical engineering topics are encouraged. Case studies on landslides are especially encouraged. Abstracts should be submitted to:

by January 20, 2006. Abstracts should be approximately 250 words and may be submitted by email. Authors will be notified of acceptance by e-mail by February 10, 2006. A camera-ready digital copy of the paper will be due by April 7, 2006. STUDENT PAPER CONTEST Students submitting papers for the student paper contest must be the first author of the paper, and the student must present the paper at the symposium. Indicate on the abstract if the paper is to be entered in the contest. Cash prizes will be awarded for winning papers. LANDSLIDE PHOTO CONTEST Landslide photographs for the photo contest must be submitted in jpg format by April 7, 2005. Include a brief caption describing the photograph. Photographs will be included in the symposium proceedings and displayed at the venue. REGISTRATION The registration for the symposium will be $135. Student registration is $35. Student banquet tickets will be an additional $20. There will be an additional cost of $35 for the field trip. This includes transportation, meals. *AGI's 2006-2007 Congressional Geoscience Fellowship* The American Geological Institute is accepting applications for next year's William L. Fisher Congressional Geoscience Fellowship. The successful candidate will spend 12 months (starting in September 2006) in Washington working as a staff member in the office of a member of Congress or a congressional committee. The fellowship represents a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the federallegislative process and make practical contributions to the effective and timely use of geoscientific knowledge on issues relating to the environment, resources, natural hazards, and federal science policy. The postmark deadline for 2006-2007 fellowship applications is February 1, 2006. The AGI Fellow will join more than two dozen other scientists and engineers for an intensive orientation program on the legislative and executive branches, organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which also guides the placement process and provides educational and collegial programs for the fellows throughout the year.
*The Fisher Endowment* Funding for the fellowship is provided through an endowment recently established by the AGI Foundation to honor William L. Fisher, the Leonidas T. Barrow Chair in the Department of Geosciences and the director of the John A. and Katherine G. Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas, Austin. For three decades, as director of the Bureau of Economic Geology, Fisher was the state geologist of Texas. At the national level, Fisher served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Energy and Minerals under President Ford. Over several administrations, he has been an advisor to the President and to the Secretaries of Energy and the Interior, and he has chaired numerous National Research Council committees and boards. *Qualifications and Application Procedures* Prospective applicants should have a broad geoscience background and excellent written and oral communications skills. Minimum requirements are a master's degree with at least three years of post-degree work experience or a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Although prior experience in public policy is not necessary, a demonstrable interest in applying science to the solution of public problems is desirable. Due to the nature of the position, preference will be given to applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must be a member of one of AGI's 44 member societies, a list of which is available at www.agiweb.org/members/index.html.

For further information, contact the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Geological Society of America (GSA), or Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) through the web addresses below. AAAS itself also offers a number of fellowships for both Congress and the executive branch. It is acceptable to apply to more than one society and fellowship. Stipends, application procedures, eligibility, timetables, and deadlines vary.
You are invited to join the Seismological Society of America in San Francisco to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake and kick off the SSA's centennial celebration at the "The 100th Anniversary Earthquake Conference". SSA will be meeting jointly with the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute for their 8th National Earthquake Conference and the California emergency management community for their annual Disaster Resistant California conference at the Moscone Convention Center on April 18-22. The conference is also being co-sponsored by more than 50 organizations from around the world, including AEG. This will be a golden opportunity for exchange between earth scientists, structural engineers, emergency managers and policy makers. Throughout the four-day meeting, there will be plenary sessions highlighting the 1906 earthquake, lessons from recent large earthquakes worldwide, and the outlook for earthquake research and loss reduction in the 21st century. Each day both plenary sessions and concurrent technical sessions will be offered, as will tutorials and field trips. Additional field trips will be available the weekend following the meeting. The SSA portion of the meeting will cover the full range of topics of interest to your membership. Registrants may attend any sessions at the meeting, whether they are sponsored by SSA, EERI or DRC. To commemorate the two centennials, the meeting will feature an Earthquake Anniversary Gala Reception and a SSA Centennial Reception and Banquet in addition to the traditional SSA icebreaker and annual luncheon. Update for AEG’s 50th Annual Meeting September 24-29, 2007, Sheraton Universal, Los Angeles, CA
This announcement is an update for AEG membership regarding AEG’s Golden Anniversary Annual Meeting. We started to get organized a few months ago, and I have been compiling a growing list of volunteers for the Annual Meeting Planning Committee. The current version is attached. I invite any and all who are interested to get involved. Please contact me to let me know of your interest. Packets will be given to those who are willing to serve as chairs of specific committees. Those who would like to participate without being in charge of a committee are also encouraged. Let me know what area interests you, and I’ll put your name in the appropriate spot in the table. I have had a few suggestions for a meeting theme. I think we need something reasonably dull – we are 50, after all. I like “AEG at 50; Heritage – Technology – Sustainability”. We also need a logo to go with the theme. The Southern California Section needs to have the theme, logo, and some general ideas about technical sessions, symposia, field trips, and social events in a form to be presented to the attendees in Boston at the 49th Annual Meeting. That meeting is in November 2006 (later than normal to be after the ‘leaf-peeper’ room rates at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel). A couple of SoCal Members will need to attend the 2006 Boston meeting as official ambassadors for the 2007 Los Angeles meeting. Another item that deserves some quality thought is AEG’s Outstanding Environmental and Engineering Geologic Project Award. In Los Angeles, and many other places in the west, two big issues are water and traffic. The Outstanding Project Award in 1995 went to the West Coast Basin, Dominguez Gap, and Alamitos Seawater Intrusion Barrier System, Los Angeles, California. Buzz Spellman has recommended the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority Red Line Tunnel, and is willing to lead an effort to get the proposal assembled by the end of 2006. Check out page 49 in your January 2005 AEG News 48 (Annual Report and Directory) for past projects and criteria for nomination. A suggestion has been made for us to get our act together to produce another Environmental and Engineering Geology Practice in Southern California special publication. Please think about this over the next month. If we are going to have such a volume available at the 2007 Annual Meeting, work on it needs to be started very soon. I am looking forward to working with a number of Southern California Section AEG members to put on a memorable 50th Annual Meeting for the Association membership. Environmental Geologist/Project Manager GeoDesign Inc, headquartered in Portland, is seeking an Environmental Geologist for our Anaheim office. This position will involve scoping of projects and budgets, performing and managing/oversight of environmental field investigations, staff recruiting/development, and mentoring; business development; and managing and oversight of project work. Position includes full benefits with salary depending upon experience. Position Requirements:
• Minimum 8 years relevant experience • Bachelors degree in Geology or Geological/Earth Sciences • CA Professional Geologist license • Excellent writing and verbal communication • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations • Understanding of restrictions imposed by budget, schedule, and contract stipulations Duties/Responsibilities
• Prepare proposals and cost estimates • Manage field portions of project tasks, including groundwater monitoring and sampling, Phase I and II site investigations,
remedial investigations, and remedial action programs • Familiarity with environmental drilling and sampling techniques • Analysis and execution of various field operations, including groundwater monitoring, drilling, soil-gas sampling, well
installation, and aquifer testing • RWQCB and DTSC projects • Brownfield investigations • Interpretation of field data to produce cross-sections, contaminant plume contours, and potentiometric surface maps • Prepare draft and final reports • Attend client and regulatory meetings with senior staff and principals and conduct presentations • Attend professional meetings as company representative and perform limited marketing functions • Mentoring junior staff and technicians
