Purva Phalguni:  Spinal Cord, Curvature of the Spine, Anaemia, hydraemic, pains in legs, Swelling of Ankle.

Uttara Phalguni 1:  Spinal Cord, Pains in the Back and in the Head.

Thus this sign represents disease relating to heart, Spleen and spinal cord -Chronic pain in spinal column.

In this issue we are discussing elaborately the concerned medical anatomy anddiseases that are connected with Leo Sign (Simha Rasi). As this sign is 5th in

Natural Zodiac Ruler Sun represents Heart, Spleen, and Dorsal & Spinal cord.

Four  different varieties of Diseases (Thymus, Spleen, and Pancreas & SpinalColumn) were taken up with supporting natal charts both from the Members ofKPAF, Hyderabad and Astrodata Bank. Hence the Article seems to be veryelaborate like a Research Paper and readers are requested to offer theirsuggestions and also any natal charts to the email id: [email protected] toinclude their views also in the coming articles on this medical subject and thenatal charts given by them would be included at the appropriate topic. As it wasobserved that each zodiac sign contains number of vital parts of the Bodyanatomy and contains many areas of diseases, hence it is decided to divide each

sign into two parts and cover all diseases relating to that Sign. In this article Leowas divided into two parts. I. Heart Ailments –  Angioplasty, Stent, Bye pass,Valves, Attacks, Pulmonary edema already taken up in the previous (May, 2010)issue, II Thymus (Lymphatic system), Spleen, Pancreas & Spinal Column andback were discussed in this issue.

Some of the topics on Medical Astrology were previously written by me publishedin Ezine of Ahmadabad by Sri Kanak Bosmia on Pancreas are again revisited withnew example charts of Westerns also in this Leo sign as they represent the same.

I Leo Ailments:a.  Thymus (Lymphatic system) AIDs,

    a. Thymus (Lymphatic system) AIDs, The thymus  is a specialized organ inthe immune system. The only known function of the thymus is the production ofT-lymphocytes (T cells), which are critical cells of the adaptive immune system. The thymus is composed of two identical lobes and is located anatomically in the

anterior superior mediastinum, in front of the heart and behind the sternum.

Histological, the thymus can be divided into a central medulla and a peripheralcortex which is surrounded by an outer capsule. The cortex and medulla playdifferent roles in the development of T-cells. Cells in the thymus can be divided

into thymic stromal cells and cells of hematopoietic origin (derived from bonemarrow resident hematopoietic stem cells). Developing T-cells are referred to asthymocytes and are of hematopoietic origin. Stromal cells include thymic corticalepithelial cells, thymic medullar epithelial cells, and dendrites cells.

The thymus provides an inductive environment for development of T-lymphocytesfrom hematopoietic progenitor cells. In addition, thymic stromal cells allow forthe selection of a functional and self-tolerant T-cell repertoire. Therefore, one ofthe most important roles of the thymus is the induction of  central tolerance.

The thymus is largest and most active during the neonatal and pre-adolescent

periods. By the early teens, the thymus begins to atrophy and thymic stroma isreplaced by adipose (fat) tissue. Nevertheless, residual T lymphopoiesis continuesthroughout adult life.

Function: In the two thymic lobes, hematopoietic precursors from the bone-marrow, referred to as thymocytes,  mature into T-cells. Once mature, T-cellsemigrate from the thymus and constitute the peripheral T-cell repertoireresponsible for directing many facets of the adaptive immune system. Loss of thethymus at an early age through genetic mutation (as in DiGeorge Syndrome)results in severe immunodeficiency and a high susceptibility to infection.

The stock of T-lymphocytes is built up in early life, so the function of the thymusis diminished in adults. It is largely degenerated in elderly adults and is barelyidentifiable, consisting mostly of fatty tissue, but it continues to function as anendocrine gland important in stimulating the immune system. Involution of thethymus has been linked to loss of immune function in the elderly, susceptibility toinfection and to cancer.

The ability of T-cells to recognize foreign antigens is mediated by the T cellreceptor.  The T cell receptor undergoes genetic rearrangement duringthymocytes maturation, resulting in each T-cell bearing a unique T-cell receptor, specific to a limited set of  peptide: MHC combinations. The random nature of the

genetic rearrangement results in a requirement of central tolerance mechanismsto remove or inactivate those T cells which bear a T cell receptor with the abilityto recognise self-peptides.

HIV / AIDS: The HIV virus causes an acquired T-cell immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS) by specifically killing CD4+ T-cells. Whereas, the major effect of the virusis on mature peripheral T-cells, the HIV virus can also infect developingthymocytes in the thymus, most of which express CD4.

     b.  Spleen

The spleen is an organ found in virtually all vertebrate animals with importantroles in regard to red blood cells and the immune system.  In humans, it is

located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. It removes old red blood cellsand holds a reserve in case of hemorrhagic shock,  especially in animals likehorses (not in humans), while recycling iron.  It synthesizes antibodies in itswhite pulp and removes, from blood and lymph node circulation, antibody-coated bacteria along with antibody-coated blood cells. Recently, it has beenfound to contain, in its reserve, half of the body's monocytes, within the redpulp,  that, upon moving to injured tissue (such as the heart), turns intodendritic cells and macrophages while aiding "wound healing", or the healing oflacerations. It is one of the centres of activity of the reticuloendothelial systemand can be considered analogous to a large lymph node as its absence leads to apredisposition toward certain infections.

The spleen, in healthy adult humans, is approximately 11 centimetres (4.3 in) inlength. It usually weighs 150 grams (5.3 oz) and lies beneath the 9th to the12th thoracic ribs. Like the thymus,  the spleen possesses only efferentlymphatic vessels.  The spleen is part of the lymphatic system. The germinalcenters are supplied by arterioles called penicilliary radicles. The spleen isunique in respect to its development within the gut. While most of the gutviscera are endodermally derived (with the exception of the neural-crest derivedsuprarenal gland), the spleen is derived from mesenchymal tissue. Specifically, the spleen forms within, and from, the dorsal mesentery. However, it still sharesthe same blood supply — the celiac trunk — as the foregut organs. Mechanical

filtration of red blood cells.  Reserve of monocytes.  Active immune responsethrough humoral and cell-mediated pathways.

Other functions of the spleen are less prominent, especially in the healthy adult:Production of  opsonins, properdin, and tuftsin.

Creation of red blood cells.  While the bone marrow is the primary site ofhematopoeisis in the adult, the spleen has important hematopoietic functions upuntil the fifth month of gestation. After birth, erythropoietic functions cease, except in some hematologic disorders. As a major lymphoid organ and a centralplayer in the reticuloendothelial system, the spleen retains the ability to produce

lymphocytes and, as such, remains an hematopoietic organ.

Storage of red blood cells and other formed elements. In horses roughly 30% ofthe red blood cells are stored there. The red blood cells can be released whenneeded. In humans, it does not act as a reservoir of blood cells. It can alsostore platelets in case of an emergency.

Storage of half the body's monocytes so that upon injury they can migrate tothe injured tissue and transform into dendritic cells and macrophages and soassist wound healing.

The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular bundle of nervous tissue and  support cells  thatextends from the brain  (the medulla  specifically). The brain and spinal cord togethermake up the central nervous system. The spinal cord extends down to the space betweenthe first and second lumbar vertebrae;  it does not extend the entire length of thevertebral column. It is around 45 cm (18 in) in men and around 43 cm (17 in) long inwomen. The enclosing bony vertebral column protects the relatively shorter spinal cord. The spinal cord functions primarily in the transmission of neural signals  between thebrain and the rest of the body but also contains neural circuits that can independentlycontrol numerous reflexes  and central pattern generators.  The spinal cord has threemajor functions: A. Serve as a conduit for motor information, which travels down thespinal cord. B. Serve as a conduit for sensory information, which travels up the spinalcord. C. Serve as a center for coordinating certain reflexes.

    d.  Pancreas:

Pancreatic cancer: Pancreatic cancer is sometimes called a "silent killer" becauseearly pancreatic cancer often does not cause symptoms, and the later symptomsare usually non-specific and varied. Therefore, pancreatic cancer is often notdiagnosed until it is advanced. Common symptoms include:

Pain in the upper abdomen that typically radiates to the back (seen incarcinoma of the body or tail of the pancreas)

Loss of appetite and/or nausea and vomiting.  Significant weight loss.

Painless jaundice (yellow skin/eyes, dark urine) when a cancer of the headof the pancreas (about 60% of cases) obstructs the common bile duct as itruns through the pancreas. This may also cause pale-colour stool andsteatorrhea.

Trousseau sign, in which blood clots form spontaneously in the portalblood vessels, the deep veins of the extremities, or the superficial veinsanywhere on the body, is sometimes associated with pancreatic cancer.

Diabetes mellitus or elevated blood sugar levels. Many patients withpancreatic cancer develop diabetes months to even years before they arediagnosed with pancreatic cancer, suggesting that new onset diabetes inan elderly individual may be an early warning sign of pancreatic cancer.

Clinical depression has been reported in association with pancreatic cancer, sometimes presenting before the cancer is diagnosed. However, themechanism for this association is not known.

The pancreas is a gland organ in the digestive and endocrine system ofvertebrates. It is both an endocrine gland producing several important hormones, including insulin,  glucagon,  and somatostatin,  as well as an exocrine gland, secreting pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes that pass to the smallintestine.  These enzymes help in the further breakdown of the carbohydrates,

protein,  and fat in the chyme.  The pancreas is a dual-function gland, havingfeatures of both endocrine and exocrine glands.

Diseases of the pancreas: Because the pancreas is a storage depot for digestiveenzymes, injury to the pancreas is potentially very dangerous. A puncture of thepancreas generally requires prompt and experienced medical intervention.
