Astrology - What You Need to Know About Sun Signs

What does your sun sign REALLY tell you about yourself? Find out here!
By Michelle Walling, CHLC
When someone asks you 'What’s your sign?', they are asking about your sun sign. From our
viewpoint here on Earth, the Sun travels around the Earth once each year. Within the space of
that year the Sun moves through all twelve signs of the zodiac, spending approximately one
month in each sign. The sign that the sun was traveling through at the time of your birth is your
sun sign.
The Sun is our most powerful planet. It gives us life, warmth, energy, and food. It is the force
that sustains us on Earth. The sun is also the most important and pervasive influence in your
horoscope, and in many ways determines how others see you. The position of the sun in your
birth chart governs your individuality, your distinctive style, and your drive to fulfill your
mission in life.
Your Sun sign is similar to the role that you’ve been given in your grand drama. One can think of
life as a play that one enters into at the time of birth. You are the leading actor in this drama, and
the role you are acting is your sun sign.
Aries March 21-April 19
Taurus April 20- May 20
Gemini May 21- June 20
Cancer June 21- July 22
Leo July 23- August 22
Virgo August 23- September 22
Libra September 23- October 22
Scorpio October 23- November 21
Sagittarius November 22- December 21
Capricorn December 22- January 19
Aquarius January 20- February 18
Pisces February 19- March 20
However, your Sun sign is not all that describes you. You also have a Moon in your birth chart,
and it’s probably a different sign from the one the Sun is in. You have planets in your birth chart,
and each may be in a different sign. Only by studying an entire birth chart can an astrologer
begin to get a complete picture of personality. Even then, there is a certain latitude for difference
because human beings are not carved into stone. We change a little every day with every person
we meet. Love, tragedy, success- each circumstance of life alters us. Regardless, the essential
person still remains and the sun sign is the outline of that essence.
With your date of birth, time of birth, and city of birth, you can get a free comprehensive detailed
birth chart which will show you much more detail about your destiny than just using sun signs.
However, learning about sun signs is an easy and fun way of getting to know yourself and
someone else.
Focusing on Sun sign attributes will give you a pretty good idea of someone’s characteristics,
behaviors, and personality. Within the Sun sign, attributes are further split up into dualities,
triplicities, quadruplicities, and
polarities.
Dualities
The twelve signs of the zodiac are
divided into two groups- masculine
and feminine. A masculine sign is
direct and energetic, and a
feminine sign is receptive and
magnetic. The masculine signs are
defined as outer-directed and the
feminine signs are self-contained
and strong through inner reserves.
Triplicities
The twelve signs are also divided into four groups containing three signs each. Each group is
called a triplicity, and each of these triplicities denotes an element. The four elements are Fire,
Earth, Air, and Water.
Quadruplicities
The twelve signs are also divided into three groups containing four signs each, called a
quadruplicity. Each quadruplicity denotes a quality which signifies the sign’s interaction with the
outside world.
Cardinal means first, with the meaning of principal, or pivotal. The role of cardinal signs is to
push forward, be first, initiate.
Fixed means to “latch onto”, or “to fasten”. Fixed signs fall in the middle, and as the
continuation of what's begun, often they're steady and stable. They fix things in place, and are
able to engage in sustained activity over a long period.
Mutable means to change, and is related to the words mutate and mutation. Mutable signs are the
chameleons of each element, able to shift into many forms, and take on different personas.
Polarities
The twelve signs are divided into six groups containing two signs each, which is its opposite sign
on the other half of the zodiac wheel.
Sun sign summary
No one sign in the zodiac has exactly the same duality, element, and quality as another sign.
Each of the twelve signs is attached to special associations in the outer world. There are lucky
