Dear Parent/Carers of Year 5 Children
Transition Event – Thursday 29th January 2015
We are delighted to invite your child to an amazing event that will be held at Outwood Academy Portland. Your son/daughter’s
Head Teacher has given us permission for your child to attend this event with your consent.
The arrangements for the day are as follows:
Children, along with their primary staff, will be collected by bus from their primary school at approximately 1.30pm, after their
normal lunch.
Our Science Department has an exciting schedule of events planned for your child which include; experiencing a space food
snack, watching a comet being made in front of their eyes, launching a rocket and many more incredible activities. We are also
very pleased to say that all children will meet the astronomer Dennis Ashton during their visit. Dennis has presented to more
than 230,000 people over the last 19 years. He will bring along his computer-driven telescope and with the right weather
conditions your child will be able to see a number of planets in incredible detail.
As we need darkness to able to see the solar system, the event will not finish until 6.00pm and therefore, a warm snack will be
provided for your child at 3.30pm. Please make sure that your child is wearing warm clothing and an appropriate outdoor coat.
We welcome parents from 4.30pm onwards to join your child in their activities. Parents should park in Sparken Hill car park
and report to main reception where our students will take you to join your child.
We will need some details from you regarding transport and dietary requirements, therefore, we ask that you complete the form
attached. Please ensure this is returned to your son/daughter’s school office no later than Friday 16 th January 2015.
If you require any further information regarding the event, please contact the academy on 01909 471010 or email
Yours sincerely
Mr D Sim
Vice Principal
