Superintendent’s Message: The 10-Second Opportunity Last Wednesday morning, Katrina Ayers provided a number of ideas and strategies that could be employed to “set the tone” for a posive, producve, and rewarding school year---for you and your students. While I’ve not stood in your shoes for quite some me now, her message reinforced a number of the “basics” I knew as a teacher. I suspect the same applies to you. I hope her message served to remind and reinforce for you some tried -and-true strategies for managing your classroom and building the type of relaonships that are crical to your effecveness and your students’ success. Her reminder of what students are feeling and seeking on the first day of school would seem to be a valuable perspecve for your consideraon. And I found the noon of the “first ten seconds” to be a praccal and powerful strategy to both set a posive tone and sustain the energy and momentum that is present at the beginning of a new school year. Many of you have had this in your repertoire for many years and already have a plan for the first day of school. However, if you’ve not yet done so, I hope you will consider developing a plan to fully leverage the “10 second opportunity” that will present itself on Wednesday. (Click here for Katrina Ayer’s organizer.) Thank you for your commitment to the students in your classroom. I know you have been working hard to prepare for their arrival tomorrow morning. Good luck, and best wishes for the upcoming school year. Snoqualmie Valley School District At a Glance… An e-newsletter to inform our learning community Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! Superintendent’s Message:

The 10-Second Opportunity

Last Wednesday morning, Katrina Ayers provided a number of ideas and strategies that could be employed to “set the tone” for a positive, productive, and rewarding school year---for you and your students. While I’ve not stood in your shoes for quite some time now, her message reinforced a number of the “basics” I knew as a teacher. I suspect the same applies to you.

I hope her message served to remind and reinforce for you some tried-and-true strategies for managing your classroom and building the

type of relationships that are critical to your effectiveness and your students’ success. Her reminder of what students are feeling and seeking on the first day of school would seem to be a valuable perspective for your consideration. And I found the notion of the “first ten seconds” to be a practical and powerful strategy to both set a positive tone and sustain the energy and momentum that is present at the beginning of a new school year.

Many of you have had this in your repertoire for many years and already have a plan for the first day of school. However, if you’ve not yet done so, I hope you will consider developing a plan to fully leverage the “10 second opportunity” that will present itself on Wednesday. (Click here for Katrina Ayer’s organizer.)

Thank you for your commitment to the students in your classroom. I know you have been working hard to prepare for their arrival tomorrow morning. Good luck, and best wishes for the upcoming school year.
