SCIENCE & ENGINEERINGLUNCH BREAK

The Cabrillo Youth Summer Institute (CYSI) is back with some exciting changes and new programs!  This summer we are excited to offer classes through a unique collaboration with Learn to Discover. Our programs offer hands-on, experiential learning that emphasize creative design skills, problem-solving and fun! Students will explore engaging technologies in lively lab-style classes. They’ll also be guided to discover and explore many potential career areas. A key contributor to future academic and career success is early exposure to career awareness. We will introduce students to the opportunities that exist and prepare them to make decisions about high school and college coursework and, ultimately, their future. Build, explore, create and play!

We emphasize small class sizes so space is limited in each camp. Register Early!

Dinosaur Discovery (ages 5-8)Get ready for a wild week and imagine being a dinosaur! Students will learn about the fascinating field of paleontology by studying fossils and building a model of a dinosaur, explore the major groups of dinosaurs, geology, fossilization, the Jurassic period and much more. Students will have fun classifying and making their own rock, mold and cast fossils, and do a dinosaur dig.

WHAT IS IT?Lunch Break Camps are designed to cover the time between a morning camp that ends at noon, and an afternoon camp that starts at 1. They are scheduled Monday through Friday, 12 noon to 1pm. Cabrillo Extension Camp Counselors will walk to pick up students from morning camps, supervise the Lunch Break activities in a classroom close by the Extension office, and walk students to their afternoon camps. We provide activities, games and basic art supplies! This camp is open to students 5 to 12 years old. Students need to bring a lunch and a drink.

WHO IS IT FOR? Kids –this time is designed to give you the chance to eat lunch, play a board game, read your favorite book, meet new friends, doodle, or lay on the grass and look at the clouds - before, after or in-be-tween your camps. Please note that there will be no video games or use of electronic devices during lunch break camps.

Parents – this time is designed to give you the peace of mind knowing that between their morning and afternoon camp your child will be supervised, have time to eat lunch, and they are within an easy walk from their morning or afternoon camp here at Cabrillo.

HOW MUCH IS IT?If your child is registered for both a morning camp that ends at noon, and an afternoon camp that begins at 1, both during the same week, there is no fee for Lunch Break! To take advantage of this, give the Extension office a call, and we’ll get you registered at no charge. Our office hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, and you can reach us at 831-479-6331.If you just need an hour before a camp that starts at 1, or an hour after a morning camp that ends at noon, the fee is $25 for one week of Lunch Break Camp. Go to our web site Cabrillo-extension.org for easy online registration for Lunch Break!

WHEN? There are six one-week Lunch Break Camp Sessions

Future Scientists Camp (ages 6-10)Perfect for those curious nature explorers! Immerse yourself in science and nature experiences in this five day camp. Students discover different areas of science through hands-on experimentation and exploration. We will investigate several fields of study including physics, geology, and biology (plants and bugs and birds, oh my!) as well as collaborative citizen science initiatives.

Citizen scientists, while not formal scientists (yet!) are general public members who aid researchers in collecting data and gathering observations. Each day involves exploring a field of study through a short presentation, an experiment, and citizen science exploration plus fun games and crafts so students can delve deeper into the world of science. Every student in this camp will make observations, ask questions, and collect data in nature. You’ll definitely walk away with a fascination for the natural world around you and the skills to become a future scientist (and citizen scientist) – all you need is curiosity!

SAT and ACT Readiness: Practice Tests, Result Analysis and Test Preparation In 2017, the world of college admissions tests changed. All colleges in the United States accept either test and students may choose which is best for them. Choosing which test, preparing to take either test, or even thinking about taking the test, can be draining for kids and parents, and create a lot of anxiety.

These workshops are designed to first determine what test is best for each student, and then prepare them for either the August 26th SAT exam or the September 9th ACT exam.

Emphasis is on small class size (no more than 10 students), and the highest quality test prep strategies. These sessions include holistic test prep: test-specific strategies, academic review, methods to control test anxiety, and ways to maintain motivation and focus under pressure.

The first portion of this program is a two-session practice test administration, one for SAT and one for ACT. In each of these first two class meetings, students will complete a 4-hour practice test. Tests are corrected immediately after the exam, so students will walk away with their results.

The instructor will recommend the Test Prep class they will be enrolled in, either the SAT Test Prep or the ACT Test Prep. Students will then be enrolled in the recommended session and will receive an email confirmation The dates, times and location of the Test Prep session are below. These dates are scheduled with the intent of being as close to the actual test dates as possible to provide the best preparation and reduce anxiety as the test approaches.

Class fee includes the Practice Test session and the recommended 4-meeting Test Prep session. Space is limited to only 10 students so register early.
