Picking the Right Senior Facility for a Loved One

It is important to find a facility that offers the level of care that you or your loved one needs. The National Caregivers Library explains the differences between the most common types of senior facilities.

Independent Living CommunitiesIndependent living retirement communities offer no care to residents. The resident must be independent in all aspects of daily living including bathing, dressing, and walking. Retirement communities often provide a variety of housing styles including townhouses and duplexes, some of which are owned by the individual. Retirement facilities often also provide social and recreational activities.

Assisted Living FacilitiesAssisted living facilities are intended for individuals who require little or no medical assistance. Residents live in their own apartments and use shared spaces including community rooms and dining rooms. Assisted living facilities often provide recreational activities, housekeeping, and transportation.

Residential Care FacilitiesResidential care facilities provide housing for those who always need assistance with medical and personal care. These facilities are often

state licensed and are staffed 24 hours a day. Individuals must be alert as well as able to dress and feed themselves. Residents eat meals in a central dining room and must only require moderate assistance with daily personal care. Residential care facilities feature one-bedroom apartments with private bathrooms, but do not have personal kitchens.

Page 7: AT LARGE - St. Charles Public Library...of U.S. flutist, Julie Koidin and Brazilian musicians, Diogo Guanabar (mandolin, cavaquinho and guitar), and Caio Padilha (guitar, rabeca, and

Continuing Care CommunitiesContinuing care retirement communities are a mix between skilled nursing, assisted living and retirement communities. These types of facilities are often beneficial to married couples who require different levels of care but wish to remain at the same facility. Continuing care facilities offer social and educational activities, fitness classes, health care, and transportation. These facilities are usually costly and require high entrance fees.

Nursing HomesNursing homes (or care centers) provide assistance which includes 24-hour nursing care and supervision, as well as rehabilitation programs. Nursing homes provide social and educational activities. Facilities offer intermediate or skilled care. Intermediate care is geared towards individuals who require assistance with health services and daily living, but not necessarily constant nursing care and supervision. Skilled nursing care is for individuals who require 24-hour medical care.

Memory Care FacilitiesMemory care facilities offer services to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and memory loss. These facilities provide different levels of care depending on how severe the memory loss of the individual is. Memory care facilities offer recreational activities and health care services.
