BOLOGNESE HILLS:A CRADLE OF VITICULTURE

A territory with an extraordinary landscape, history, and cultural heritage, recognized worldwide for the quality of its food and wine. Located in the hills to the south and west of Bologna, at various heights and with extremely wide range of soils and microclimates, this territory is devoted to the production of quality wines; from the great red wines, popular all over the world, to the DOCG Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto wine, produced in the lands surrounding the homonymous location.

VALUES THAT IMPROVE OVER TIMEConsorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi was founded in 1971 born from the merger of two historical supervisory consortia, ‘Monte San Pietro’ and ‘Vini Castelli Medioevali’, and includes wine growers, wine producers, and bottling companies from the territory, whose aim is to protect and promote ‘DOCG Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto’ and ‘DOC Colli Bolognesi’. Dominating 96% of total production, it is one of the main reference points for national and European institutions in the Emilia-Romagna wine industry.

SPECIAL WINES WITH A LONG HISTORYRetracing the past through archaeological evidence, we have found out that the countryside fields surrounding Bologna had been planted with vineyards and olives since the times of the ancient Etruscans. Subsequently, the Romans inherited their production techniques, strengthening the wine-making tradition in this area, passed down to the present day.

DOCG COLLI BOLOGNESI PIGNOLETTO

‘Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto’ Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin wine was named after the Pignoletto area in the municipality of Valsamoggia, near the city of Bologna. Its grape variety is Grechetto Gentile, also known locally by its traditional name Alionzina. Its most popular versions are Superiore, Frizzante (bubbly), Spumante (sparkling), and the intriguing Classico Superiore, a strong structured, deep, and persistent variety.

Definitely one of the most interesting white wines in our wine industry, Pignoletto presents such a pronounced typical character that is now appreciated all over Italy, as well as abroad.

The production of grapes suitable for making DOCG Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto wine stretches approximately to 20,000 quintals over around 640 hectars of vineyards.

DOC COLLI BOLOGNESI

Over the last few years, the significant number of wineries included in the most famous and influential wine guides and magazines, as well as the excellent quality/price ratio, has shown that the traditional, peculiar characteristics of the wines have achieved levels of excellence which include the majority of the production, not just a few brands.

Back in the 1980s, the red wines with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and the traditional Barbera and Rosso Bologna mixed vintage made the area surrounding the Bolognese Hills popular in Italy and over the world. Today, in this area, Barbera is still considered to be a historical wine from the Bolognese Hills, where there is still an excellent production, which is in demand on international markets. The sub-area of Bologna, with its traditional Rosso, the aromatic Bianco, and the sparkling Spumante, offers wines that have always occupied a place of honour on the tables of Bolognese people.
