COMMENTS FROM THE COMMITTEE Picture of Peace

-Unknown

An artist was commissioned by a wealthy man to paint

something that would depict peace. After a great deal of

thought, the artist painted a beautiful country scene. There were

green fields with cows standing in them, birds were flying in

the blue sky and a lovely little village lay in a distant valley.

The artist gave the picture to the man, but there was a look of

disappointment on his face. The man said to the artist, "This

isn't a picture of true peace. It isn't right. Go back and try again.

The artist went back to his studio, thought for several hours

about peace, then went to his canvas and began to paint. When

he was finished, there on the canvas was a beautiful picture of a

mother, holding a sleeping baby in her arms, smiling lovingly at

the child. He thought, surely, this is true peace, and hurried to

give the picture to the wealthy man. But again, the wealthy man

refused the painting and asked the painter to try again.

The artist returned again to his studio. He was discouraged, he

was tired and he was disappointed. Anger swelled inside him,

he felt the rejection of this wealthy man. Again, he thought, he

even prayed for inspiration to paint a picture of true peace.

Then, all of a sudden an idea came. He rushed to the canvas and

began to paint as he had never painted before. When he

finished, he hurried to the wealthy man.

He gave the painting to the man. He studied it carefully for

several minutes. The artist held his breath. Then the wealthy

man said, "Now this is a picture of true peace." He accepted the

painting, paid the artist and everyone was happy.

And what was this picture of true peace?? The picture showed a

stormy sea pounding against a cliff. The artist had captured the

fury of the wind as it whipped black rain clouds which were

laced with streaks of lightening. The sea was roaring in turmoil,

waves churning, the dark sky filled with the power of the

furious thunderstorm.

And in the middle of the picture, under a cliff, the artist had

painted a small bird, safe and dry in her nest snuggled safely in

the rocks. The bird was at peace midst the storm that raged

about her.

God Uses Our Difficulties

“That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in

when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10, NIV

We all face difficult situations. Somebody isn’t

treating you right; your business is not growing as fast

as you had hoped, or maybe you’re single and still

haven’t met anyone. It’s easy to get frustrated and

anxious on the inside. You don’t understand why it’s

taking so long or why things haven’t changed.

But here’s a key: just because it’s an uncomfortable

place doesn’t mean it’s not where you’re supposed to

be. God uses difficulties to do a work in us. We grow

in the tough times. That’s when our character is being

developed. God will not allow a difficulty unless He

has a divine purpose for it. If we’re supposed to reach

“I’m not going to live frustrated because I am

uncomfortable. I’m not going to be upset because

things are not happening on my timetable. I’m not

going to fight against everything that I don’t like.”

Instead, believe that God is doing a work in you.

Believe that He has the best for you. And see yourself

Developing Good Homework and Study Habits Create an environment that is conducive to doing

homework. Youngsters need a permanent work space

in their bedroom or another part of the home that is

quiet, without distractions, and promotes study.

Schedule ample time for homework.

Establish a household rule that the TV set stays off

during homework time.

Supervise computer and Internet use.

Be available to answer questions and offer assistance,

but never do a child’s homework for him/her.

Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue

and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to

close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a

break periodically when it will not be too disruptive.

If your child is struggling with a particular subject,

and you aren’t able to help him/her yourself, a tutor

can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child’s

teacher first.

Some children need help organizing their homework.

Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help

overcome homework problems.

Back-to-School Essentials Smart buys that keep your kids healthy throughout the school

year

Pens, pencils and three-ring binders are tried-and-true

staples, but make sure your child’s school year is a healthy

one, too, with:

Aluminum Water Bottle Help your child swap out sugary drinks for water

by giving him a cool bottle. Skip the plastic kind

and you’ll be doing your part for the environment.

Pedometer Kids walk more when they’re wearing this nifty

gadget, and research proves it!

Bento Lunchbox These handy compartmentalized lunchboxes make

it easy for you to pack cut veggies, salads and other

nutritious lunch options.

Backpack on Wheels If your kid’s backpack is bigger than he/she is,

consider going mobile with a rolling version.

Experts say kids shouldn’t carry more than 15% of

their body weight, but we know that’s not always

possible. Hello, wheels!

Hand Sanitizer (if allowed)

What an easy way to cut down on sick days (for

you and the kids)! Stock up on the little, packable

bottles. If they are not allowed for the children,

provide them for the teachers to carry so that they

can help the children sanitize frequently.

Share your 1st day of school pictures and

comments for next month’s newsletter.

ISN’T IT FUNNY Baptism

A father is in church with three of his young children,

including his five year old daughter. As was customary, he

sat in the very front row so that the children could properly

witness the service. During this particular service, the

minister was performing the baptism of a tiny infant. The

little five year old girl was taken by this, observing that he

was saying something and pouring water over the infant’s

head. With a quizzical look on her face, the little girl turned

to her father and asked: “Daddy, why is he brainwashing

that baby?”

Spelling Help

My son, Mitchell, a kindergartener, practices spelling with

magnetic letters on the refrigerator: “cat,” “dog,” and

“mom” have been proudly displayed for all to see. One

morning while getting ready for the day, Mitchell bounded

into the room with his arms outstretched. In his hands were

three magnetic letters: G-O-D. “Look what I spelled,

Mom!” Mitch exclaimed, a proud smile on his face. “That’s

wonderful!” I said. “Now go put them on the fridge so Dad

can see when he gets home tonight.” That Christian

education is certainly having an impact, I thought, happily.

Just then, a little voice called from the kitchen. “Mom?

How do you spell ‘zilla?”

The Story of Moses

A little boy went to church with his grandma. He went into

Sunday school with the other kids. After church he rejoined

his grandma, who asked what he had learned that day.

“Well there was this guy named Moses,” the boy started,

“and he was running from this mean pharaoh. Moses & his

army came to the Red Sea, but pharaoh was closing in, so

Moses had his engineers build a bridge real quick & they got

in their tanks & went across it. They got to the other side &

when pharoah’s army was still on it they called in an air

strike!!”

“I don’t think that’s the story you were told,” the grandma

said.

“You’re right grandma, but if I told you the story they told

us, you wouldn’t believe it either.”

Long Hair

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked

his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss his use

of the car. His father said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you.

You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little, and get

your hair cut, then we will talk about it.” A month later the

boy came back and again asked his father if they could

discuss his use of the car. His father said, “Son, I’m real

proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve

studied your Bible diligently, but you didn’t get a haircut!”

The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know

Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know Samson had

long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and

even Jesus had long hair.” His father replied, “Yes son, and

they walked everywhere they went!”

The Ten Commandments Moses went up to Mount Sanai;

He had to go up alone,

To get commandments from the Lord

Divinely etched in stone.

He brought them down the mountain,

And showed them to the Jews.

He said, “Follow these laws of God,

Or die in your sins --- you choose.”

You shall have no other gods before me,

It simply can’t be done!

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 1.”

No graven images shall you worship,

This you should NEVER do!

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 2.”

You shall not use my name in vain;

It’s a great insult to Me! “This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 3.”

You shall keep holy the Sabbath day;

On that day, work no more.

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 4.”

Honor your Father and your Mother,

As long as you’re alive.

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 5.”

You shall not kill a living soul;

Adhere to my edicts!

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 6.”

You shall not commit adultery,

I say to you from Heaven.

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 7.”

You shall not steal from anyone;

Thievery I really hate!

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 8.”

You shall not lie about anyone,

Or in any way seek to malign.

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 9.”

You shall not covet anything

That’s owned by other men.

“This,” says the Almighty God,

“is commandment number 10.”

But Jesus fulfilled these commandments,

So we’re under the law no more; for,

Instead we’re saved through Jesus Christ,

And we’ll live forever more!

Health Tips Oh no....Parents really need to take advantage of the Varicella

vaccine. Both of my kids were inoculated. Diseases are not as

simple to get over nowadays.

Chickenpox is a very contagious disease. You or your child may

be at risk if you have never had chickenpox or gotten the

vaccine. Chickenpox causes a blister-like rash, itching,

tiredness, and fever. This can make you feel sick and very

uncomfortable and cause you to miss a week of school or work.

Most children with chickenpox completely recover. But, it can

be severe for babies, adolescents, adults, pregnant women, and

people with weakened immune systems.

Chickenpox used to be very common in the United States. Each

year, about 4 million people would get chickenpox. Between

10,500 and 13,000 people would be hospitalized, and 100 to 150

people would die because of chickenpox. Most people who had

severe chickenpox were healthy beforehand.

Chickenpox vaccine is the best way to protect you and your

child from chickenpox. Also, when you get vaccinated, you

protect others in your community. This is especially important

for people who cannot get vaccinated, such as those with

weakened immune systems and pregnant women.

Children should get the first dose of chickenpox vaccine when

they are 12 through 15 months old and the second dose at age 4

through 6 years. People 13 years of age and older who have

never had chickenpox should get two doses at least 28 days

apart. If you or your child only got one dose in the past, check

with your doctor about getting a second dose.

Two doses of chickenpox vaccine are very effective at

preventing severe disease, complications, and death. You can

still get chickenpox if you have been vaccinated. But, the

symptoms are usually not as severe as chickenpox in

unvaccinated people. They will have fewer blisters, little or no

fever, and will recover from their rash more quickly.
