Communicating to leadersUnderstanding different leadership and

communication styles was the focus of Lead-ership Washington County’s September ses-sion. Dick Hammond from Leadership on the Move led the day-long workshop.

The day was full of activities to teach effective leadership and communication skills. The class was led through several exercises to determine their current styles of leadership and areas in which they wanted to focus on for growth. Throughout the day class members were reminded that

leadership is proactive and effective lead-ers challenge the process, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act, model the way, and encourage the heart.

Chamber-CVB staff member Jenny Mills is part of the new Leadership class. She stated that her favorite part of this ses-sion was when everyone had to line up on along a rope on the floor, then get in order according to their birth date without ver-bally speaking and while keeping at least one foot on the rope all times.

She explained, “Several people imme-diately held up a number on one or two hands. While that was a great strategy, one that eventually proved to be successful, people could easily get confused. Someone holding up one finger with their right hand and two fingers with their left could be try-ing to convey they were born in the twelfth month, the third month, or on January 2nd. And, if you’re looking at him from behind you could have a completely different per-ception! That exercise reminded us that

others’ perceptions are not always the same as our own, so we definitely need to keep that at the forefront of our thoughts when trying to communicate in the world.”

Leadership Washington County is a pro-gram of the Washington County Chamber aimed at educating and motivating cur-rent and future leaders. The next session will be a Team-Building Retreat on Sept. 27 at Camp For All. The session is being facilitated by Camp For All Director Kurt Podeszwa.

leadership participants receiving instructions for the “birth date” exercise.

Class members listen as Dick Hammond speaks about the importance of knowing your own com-munication style before issuing the Rainbow Test.Teams had five minutes or less to master a six-step

arm movement routine in which both arms move continuously, but in opposite directions. This team led by “Joking” Jared performs its routine for the judges.

Chad “the Dad,” “Manly” Mordecai, “Chippy” Chris, and “Witty” Wendy take a moment to write

everyone learned quickly that using long sticks to put marbles into their own cups was far more difficult than giving marbles to someone else. The marbles represented wisdom and the exercise reminded participants that giving others a bit of your wisdom is more rewarding than imparting wisdom to yourself.

“Dependable” Dave, “Designing” Donna, “Daring” Derek, and “Sunny” Cyndee work together to build a model for their ideal community.

More “atta boys” and kind words being issued to fellow classmates.

Junior leadership ProgramApplications for the Fall 2012 session of Wash-

ington County Junior Leadership are now being accepted at the Chamber. The program educates and motivates high school juniors and seniors to become leaders within their schools and community.

Selected students will participate in a seven-week program and learn first-hand from prominent leaders and be exposed to great career opportunities. Students who are currently juniors or seniors in any high school in Washington County may apply. The registration fee is $40. Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 4-7pm, beginning October 10.

A complete schedule is printed on the application, available from counselors at area high schools, at the Washington County Chamber office, or online at www.BrenhamTexas.com under “Chamber” then “Leader-ship.” Completed applications are due by Sept. 28.

Unity Theatre opens with‘The Philadelphia Story’

Unity Theatre is proud to open its 2012-13 season with Philip Barry’s wickedly witty comedy, “The Philadel-phia Story.” Barry wrote more than 20 plays, but is best remembered for “The Philadelphia Story,” a comedy of manners set in Philadelphia high society during the late 1930s. The play previews Thursday, September 20, opens Friday, September 21, and plays through Sunday, October 7, 2012.

Tracy Lord, the wealthy heroine of “The Philadelphia Story,” divorces her husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, and is about to marry a man named George Kittredge. However, their wedding preparations are interrupted by meddlesome reporters, her ex-husband and her estranged father; she is also disconcerted by the growing realization that she still has feelings for her ex-husband, Dexter. Barry wrote the role especially for actress Katharine Hepburn, and the play’s success simultaneously launched Hepburn’s career on the stage and film.

“The Philadelphia Story” will be directed by Carolyn Johnson, who directed last season’s popular Studio pro-duction of Last Train to nibroc. The stellar cast features Bethany McCade as Tracy, Ryan Schabach as Dexter, Tom

Prior as Seth, Elizabeth Byrd as Margaret, Jen Lucy Es-trada as Liz, Josh Estrada as Mike, Shanae’a Moore as Di-nah, Mike Roberts as Uncle Willie, Andy Ingalls as Sandy, Andrew Garrett as George and Chris Viles as Thomas.

Reservations can be made through the Unity Theatre box office at 300 Church Street, open Monday through Fri-day from 10am-2pm by phone at 830-8358. More details are online at www.UnityBrenham.org.

Tourism Tuesday MeetingThe next Tourism Tuesday meeting will be held on Tues-

day, October 16, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chamber Conference Room. All tourism-partner businesses are invited to at-tend. Please plan on attending to learn about the CVB’s promotional activities and plans for promoting our area in the new budget year.

On the right is a small, beautifully restored chapel that will be used for weddings. These structures are surrounded by many of the buildings that were part of the original square which have now been restored and outfit-ted for retail use.

local wines added to Fair

A cluster of wine events have been added to the 144th Annual Washington County Fair agenda, including a non-commercial wine competition on Thursday, Sept. 13.

The following evening, on Friday, Sept. 14, the First An-nual Washington County Fair Wine Event kicks off with a wine tasting at 7:00 p.m. in the VIP Room. Wines will be provided by members of the Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail and the event is open to the public.

Beginning Saturday, September 15, and running throughout the Fair, the three Washington County win-eries — Pleasant Hill, Saddlehorn and Windy Winery — will offer wine for sale by the glass, available in the Beer Barn.

If you’ve wondered how delicious our local commercial wines are, this is your chance to check them out! For more information, contact Jeanne Cottle at 979-421-3908.

Calendar(Continued from Page 8)

Spend your weekend at Washington-on-the-Brazoslock, Stock and Barrel

Set your sights on Independence Hall September 15 for Lock, Stock and Barrel, an exciting look at firearms in the Republic of Texas! We’ll explore the myriad of styles and their uses here in Texas circa 1820-1850 through con-temporary accounts as well as reproduction and original pieces.

19th Century Folk RemediesThen on September 16, a special presentation focuses

on the folk remedies of the 19th century. Today’s modern medicines may not always taste the best, but they work and we have the science to prove how and why.

In the 1800s, medicine was a combination of new sci-ence and old traditions. Crooks and quacks hawked fake cures creating distrust of medicine. Many clung to the old folk healers’ potions and cures, and it is these folk cures that we are going to look at — a world of plasters and talis-mans, serums and spells, some dangerous and some silly. While many have faded away, a few still linger in our soci-ety today; just think of the many ways to cure hiccups.

Presentations on both days will be given at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. These presentations are approximately 30-45 minutes in length. Visitors should meet at the Visi-tor Center 5-10 minutes ahead of time and dress appropri-

ately for the season as the presentations will take place in a period setting. All visitors are welcome but small children must be accompanied by an adult.

Ticket prices are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to children 6 and under and to Texas State Park annual pass holders. Accessible for the mobility impaired.

it’s Cotton Pickin’ Time!Join the folks at Barrington Living History Farm on

September 15 and16 as they harvest the Barrington Farm cotton crop. They’ve planted, watered and weeded the cot-ton and now invite YOU to help pick, hand gin, card and weave the beautiful “Lone Star” antique variety of cot-ton!

When Dr. Anson Jones and his family lived at Barrington Farm in the 1850s, cotton was the main cash crop. Dur-ing that time the majority of the cotton crop would have been sent elsewhere for processing and the family would have purchased finished bolts of cloth for their personal use. But even though the industrial revolution and econo-mies of scale may have been taking hold, most families were familiar with the steps needed to process raw cotton into cloth. In fact, cotton remains a vital component of our daily lives. This special program gives you the hands-on opportunity to learn the process.

The program is free with general admission and reser-

vations are not required. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for children 6 and under. Texas State Park annual pass holders are also admitted free. The Farm is open from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Portions of the activity take place in an 1850s setting and out of doors, so visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather.

With Barrington Farm in the background, a cos-tumed interpreter demonstrates to children how to pick cotton.
