President’s Letter
May 2011
After that exhausting 50th pancake breakfast, April was a time to recover and rest up. Only a few of us enjoyed that fantastic Mt Baldy tour with lunch at a 1920’s log lodge. The great experience was followed by an equally great experience, a tour of Art Moore’s garage.
Hmm, only 4 cars on the tour and Art and Olive chose to drive to the starting point of the tour in Brea. They live only blocks from the Mt Baldy road in Ontario. They said it was worth it. Les Seymour’s presentation at our April meeting was a big hit. He toured the USA in
his home built airplane and we saw so much of our beauti-ful country from the air yet low enough to see the details. Thanks Les and thanks Don Ratzlaff for inviting him. The Youth Expo was another success at the Orange Co Fairgrounds. Check for details further on. Contact Histo-rian Dick Smith if you have an interesting story about the club from long ago. He is
planning a series of articles of interest from times past. The 4th Thursday breakfast is April 28th at Knotts Berry Farm. It’s always a good group but you can make it better. Its good food, cheap and Terry Collings will be your hostess. The 1st Saturday BS breakfast can’t be far behind on May
7th. Don Ratzlaff has surprise entertainment planned so we hope to see you at Spiro’s restaurant in Orange too. As you have read above, we have had fun, we are having fun and will continue to have fun but it’s up to you. We have had fantastic participation this year but your enthusi-asm is waning. It’s Spring. Shine them up and tune them up and bring out your Model A. Need some help? Use that
roster and call someone. Your board is working hard for you to have a great experience but we need you to be there. We prefer you drive your Model A but just come and join us even if it’s in your Honda, Model T, VW, Chevy or Harley.
Don’t fret about your Model A having trouble. A club tour is the BEST place to drive it. We’ll fix it or tow it and give you a ride home. After a few tours you will hardly be able to wait for the next one and maybe even lead one.
Move on to the rest of the newsletter. They don’t
―preach‖ like ―Father Parrish‖. Richard

Some sunshine....talked to Greg Earhart. He is doing very well. Coerced the doctors to let
him go home for Easter, after only 2 full days in hospital following 4-way by-pass. Wishing
you a full recovery, Greg.
Darlene Ingwerson is also heading home following some therapy time. When
this writer visited, she felt really good, looked good and was waiting to be re-
leased from the re-hab facility, right before Easter.
We sure hope to see these members very soon.
On a personal note, this writer and the club would like to say "Thank You" to everyone
who donated time, work, prizes, and/or helped in anyway to the success of our 50th Pancake
Breakfast & Raffle.

HISTORIANS CORNER
The Historians Corner will return next month
Thank you from the Côtés
Dear Model A Ford Club,
Thank you for the beautiful azalea tree. Pink was Christine’s favorite color. Since she
could not walk through the pancake breakfast, we drove her up and down to see all the
cars on display. She had a big smile and reminisced about the fun times at our Model A
meetings from helping with refreshments, drawing raffle tickets, wrapping eating utensils,
cracking eggs, (when we did it the old fashion way).
Christine was a motivational speaker for the Donate Life Awareness program and became
an organ donor. Her corneas were transplanted and restored the vision of two people.
We also wish to thank everyone for all the lovely sentiment cards and constant
prayers. She certainly touched the hearts of everyone she met.
Thank you,
The Côté Family

Orange County Then & Now Santa Ana
The Spurgeon Methodist Church located on the northeast corner of Broadway and Church Streets in Santa Ana. The building on the extreme right is the YMCA built in 1923. Photo appears to have been taken in the 1920’s.

April Roster Drawing
By Don Ratzlaff
What’s that you say? Somebody won the prize? Yes indeed, the prize was claimed by Don
Geisen; so now he is $80 richer and we have to start all over again. So as you all know the
May drawing will be for a measly $10 but, as we have seen, it sometimes goes unclaimed.
April Guest Speaker
By Don Ratzlaff
Guess what? We had a guest speaker at the April Meeting, his name is Les Seymour and he
holds a “sport pilot certificate”. This qualifies the pilot to fly a “recreational-light” airplane
while observing multiple flight restrictions. Les built his experimental-light plane, from a kit, in
his garage in 2004.Les narrated his story, with an accompanying video, of flying his plane from
Fallbrook, Ca to the east coast and back. It was a 7,300-mile journey that took 4½ weeks to
complete. The journey took him northeast over the canyon area of Utah, above the Yellow-
stone Nat’l Park of Montana & Wyoming and on to Oshkosh, MI. He then flew eastward to
New York City and around the Statue of Liberty. The show provided many awesome, scenic
pictures of these United States of America as taken from 1000 feet up. It was an informative,
entertaining talk enjoyed by those present.

Youth Expo.
By Don Ratzlaff
Colleen, Chris, Dominic; you did it! You organized and executed a
really good display of the Model A and the Orange County Model A
Club Activity at the recent Youth Expo held at the County Fair
Grounds.
We had 3 Model A cars present for display on
each of the 3 days of the expo; each day, 3 dif-
ferent cars. The cars were brought by Dale
McCall, Red Sickman, Don Schmidt, Pete Hyland, Don Ratzlaff and Ar-
thur Wright. The trading cards made up by Dominic were a big hit
with the parents and children alike. Dominic
reported that approximately 4000 cards were
handed out and upwards of 10 membership applications were re-
quested. Of course, club members were present to man the booth
continually during the 3 days; you know who you were; Kudos to you
all!

Mount Baldy Village Tour By Don Ratzlaff
It seemed like a good idea; a Sunday morning drive in the local mountains, fresh air to breath,
scenic vistas to view, wild flowers to appreciate and lunch at the village lodge. Actually, it was
a great idea; the weather was perfect and the road was well maintained. The turnout was
small, three model A’s, one ’32 Ford Coupe and one modern for a total of 14 people. By
name, those hardy souls were Art and Olive Moore, Gary &
Marilyn Chambers, Don & Carolyn Ratzlaff, Don & Colleen
Schmidt, Mark and Eileen
Schwing and Jeanie & Richard
Parrish along with Cody Par-
rish and friend. We experi-
enced no major mishaps al-
though our model A, Cora,
(for collection of recycled assemblies) did threaten to boil
over once or twice. We stopped to add water a couple times.
Traffic consisted of a significant number of two wheel bicycles
enjoying the downhill rides. We narrowly missed having extra
radiator decorations a time or two. Lunch and the camarade-
rie were good after which we took the fast way down to up-
land. As a bonus Art and Olive
invited us to visit their home in
Upland. They have built a garage
that exceeds anything you can
imagine for supporting your
Model A Hobby. You would have to see it to appreciate it. Any-
way, it was a truly fine day and a good model A experience;
round trip, 80 miles. Question: Was it Sunday, the “mountain
road” or the early hour that kept you away?
First Saturday Morning BS Session By Don Ratzlaff We had our monthly model A BS session on Saturday, April 2, and the attendance was down
a little at about 14. However, the discussions were carried out with gusto and everyone
seemed satisfied. Remember the next session is set for May 7th. I have arranged for a guest
speaker from Schaffer Oil to present his tale of oil and lubrication. I think it should be infor-
mative and entertaining; I hope you don’t miss it. So we’ll see you there starting at 8am Sat-
urday Morning at SPIRO’S Restaurant in Orange, CA.
