Chief Executive and Chairman Introduction
The most fundamental difference between the commercial and the charity sector is one of resources. In the commercial sector, success is often measured by ‘the bottom line’ i.e. the profitability of the business. When the business grows then it is easy to take on more staff, increase the size of one’s premises and look to even more success and profit. We measure our success at Macmillan Jersey in the number of people we support and the quality of that support. With regards to numbers, we provided over 3,600 sessions last year and over 2,500 in 2015, a 38% increase. 98% of service users who completed our annual service evaluation reported that they were very satisfied with the time that someone spent with them, the support they were given and the communication and listening skills of the person providing the support. Despite the significant growth in activity we have not increased our paid support resources, instead we continue to better utilise our skilled and passionate volunteer workforce.
During the year we all agreed that our home at the Lido Medical Centre, where we provide all our services from, needed a name that resonated with its purpose whilst sounding welcoming and non-medical. The Macmillan Jersey Cancer Information and Support Centre became The Oasis. We feel this name much better reflects the purposefully designed space and services on offer.
The addition of a wellbeing service has now been operational for two years and continues to be hugely popular with our service users. Our support team says that it helps people who do not want to actively ‘seek support’ to be part of The Oasis services in a way that feels accessible and comfortable to them. Everyone’s needs are different and the timing of support needs varies too so most importantly it is encouraging people to come through our doors for the first time. Once people have spent time at The Oasis most people say it is then much easier to keep coming back, dipping in and out of the services available to them and their family and friends.
Volunteers continue to be the backbone of our charity, without them we simply couldn’t do all that we do. We were so very fortunate to increase our volunteer base significantly during the course of the year and we continue to look at how we can support and develop our volunteers by giving back to them as they give their time so generously to us.
2016 was also successful in terms of raising enough money to cover our operational costs. The charity landscape is becoming even more stretched with so many charities competing for the pennies of the generous public. Our fundraising team has therefore had to think even more strategically about how we can ensure our sustainability into the future, whilst expecting our operating costs to increase as service development opportunities become increasingly evident.
The Year Ahead - 2017
Our objectives this year include increasing the accessibility of our services, further developing group support sessions and enhancing the emotional support services available to those affected by cancer (now or in the past) and just as importantly their family and friends.
We are also aware that, although we supported over 3,600 people in Jersey last year, we are still only reaching a fraction of those touched by cancer on the Island and we know full well that we still have a long way to go. As you read this report, if you know of anyone touched by cancer be it someone diagnosed or someone close to them at home or at work, please do tell them who we are, what we do and how they can find us.

About usWho we are
Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey offers free practical information, and emotional and social support to people in Jersey with any type of cancer and at any stage, along with their families and friends. We also have a wellbeing service which includes complementary therapies and relaxation groups. All our services are free and most of all confidential. Our services are provided from The Oasis, Macmillan Jersey’s cancer support centre based at the Lido Medical Centre.
Our history
In the 1980’s Bryan Skinner, a Jersey resident and cancer patient wrote an article concerning the lack of information and support available to patients. He linked up with Vicky Clement-Jones, a research doctor and fellow cancer patient to form Cancerbackup in the UK. After Bryan’s death, his widow Celia was instrumental in establishing Cancerbackup in Jersey. Following the merger, in 2008, of Cancerbackup and Macmillan we became Macmillan Cancer Support (Jersey) Limited, an independent local charity, where every penny raised stays in the Island to fund the vital services we provide.
The challenge and our aim
Cancer is increasing and by 2020 it is estimated that nearly 1 in 2 of the population will receive a cancer diagnosis at some time during their lives.The increase is mainly because people are living longer. Due to improved treatments many more people will live beyond cancer and our service aims to meet the growing demand and changing needs.
We aim to ensure people feel empowered to make the right decisions in terms of their treatment options and to live well with and beyond the diagnosis, knowing their family and friends are supported also.

Our work is only possible thanks to our supporters. From holding coffee mornings to volunteering in the community or at The Oasis, they do all sorts to help people touched by cancer. As the number of people diagnosed with cancer increases, we need the help of our supporters now more than ever before. Only together will we be able to reach everyone touched by cancer in Jersey.

Our service and staff infrastructureMacmillan Jersey aims to help people to live well and take back control of their lives through their experience with cancer. All services are provided from The Oasis which is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm
The Oasis services include:
Practical support Access to a wide range of information resources and a cancer support team to help make sense of it all
Emotional support Access to a listening ear or to more formal emotional support and counselling if necessary
Group support Access to informal gatherings to meet others who share a similar experience and to the Prostate Cancer Support Group
Access to the monthly ‘Talking Heads’ session providing hair loss and wig advice, and to ‘Life after Cancer’ moving forward programme.
Wellbeing services Access to complementary therapies and relaxation classes
All services provided are free and confidential. You do not need to be referred, you can just drop-in or make an appointment.
Macmillan Nurses There are three Macmillan nurse posts based at Jersey General Hospital which were originally funded by Macmillan. We make every effort to work closely with these nurses and all other professionals involved in supporting people touched by cancer.

Volunteers make our world go round. Put it simply, we couldn’t operate with-out them. We are so fortunate to have all our special and skilled volunteers who help us deliver all aspects of our charity.

There has been a 38% increase in the number of support sessions provided in comparison to 2015 and a 61% increase in comparison to 2014. As you can see, every year we have been able to support more people.
A third of people using our services are undergoing treatment, a third have completed treatment and are living with or beyond cancer, the remaining third are either living with cancer, recently diagnosed or bereaved.

We do not just support the person who has had a cancer diagnosis, just as importantly we are there to support their family and friends too.
There are many topics we can support people with but mostly people just want a safe place to talk, with someone who is trained to listen.

Financial and Fundraising report
Financial statement from Finance DirectorIn 2016 the Charity’s income increased by a record 36%. This was due to some very generous in memorium donations and the sponsorship from the second Macmillan Jersey group cycling event, the Pyrenees Cycle Challenge from Carcassonne to Barcelona. With expenditure over the year only increasing by 3%, this means that the Charity is in a very healthy position and will be able to finance not only the running of The Oasis but also move forward with some planned projects to help all those touched by cancer.
Fundraising review from 2016Overall for 2016 we came in 33% over our annual projected fundraising target for the year. A key fundraising highlight was the Pyrenees Cycle Challenge, sponsored by Investec, which raised an incredible £110,357 by 29 cyclists which was 45% over projection. Another highlight was being RBC’s chosen charity of the year and after a year of amazing support they raised £57,824.13.We continue to deliver three annual events. 2016 saw a significant decrease of 42% on the previous year in the funds raised for Jersey’s Greatest Coffee Morning sponsored by C5. We had over 25 registrations that did not end up holding an event which was a major contributing factor. We will look to further address the ongoing support and engage-ment of registrants this year. The Rowathon sponsored by RBSi delivered an 11% increase on revenue, even with 9 teams short of capacity, and the Golf Day sponsored by Howden delivered a 14% increase in revenue.Community Fundraising was down 21% and Individual Fundraisers was up 29% on the previous year; we will be looking into ways of engaging more with the community in 2017.

Another highlight for 2016 was donations received In Memorium and Legacies, totalling £121,850.32. We are very conscience that this type of donation is not easy to forecast, but nonetheless always very welcome.External communications and PR was consistent throughout 2016, with a wide range of media exposure across print, radio and a number of TV interviews. We launched our new website which had over 15,000 page views and is a fantastic way for people to find out more about the charity and get in touch. Our social media channels are growing well too.We continue to be humbled and immensely grateful to so many people who raise funds for us in so many innovative and wonderful ways. We thank each and everyone of you.
