REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE OF THE

MELBOURNE ATHENA3JUM FOR THE YEAR 1882 .

The Committee of t.he Melbourne Athenreum submit the following Report :-

1. The revenue of the year is very satisfactory. The gross receipts amount to £2757 lIs. IOd., as against £2643 15s. 9d. last year.

2. The total number of members on the roll is 1833, and the amount paid by thelll is £1391 7s. 3d.

3. The Large Hall has been in increased demand during the year, and has yielded a revenue of £812 14s. 6d., which, with the exception of the year 1875, is the largest arnount received during any year since its erection. r~rhe avera.ge rental for the last ten years has been £660.

4. The revenue fron1 the SlIlall Hall is £234 5s. ; frorn the Offices £1:;7; and frolll rOOIl1S, £119 12s.

5. Especial attention has been given to manage the finances of the Institution with as much economy as is consistent with a due regard to a proper supply of books, periodicals, and ne\vspapers. The total expenditure for the ordinary purposes of the Institution is £219] 17s. 3d.

6. The number of books added to the Library is 582. The sum of £562 9s. 9d. was spent for books, magazines, and newspapers; also £92 1 s. 4d. for binding.

7. Referring to the itenl of law costs in the financial statement, the Comillittee report that they have found it necessary during the year to have t.he right-of-way at the rear of the Institution brought under the Land Transfer Statute.

S. The loa.n on mortgage has been reduced by £500, leaving £5000 still to be paid. 'This amount, at the present rate of income, the COlTIluittee hope to reduce at the rate of £500 per year.

present requjrements of this city, has received a large amount of attention. A special Sub-committee was appointed to consider the subject, and after receiving their report, it was decided by the General CJolnmittee, after mature deliberation, that it would be prudent to postpone the undertaking until the debt on the Institution shall have been further reduced.

10. Another matter that luts been discussed is the lighting of the Institution with the electric Hght. rrhe advantage to be derived therefrom in lessening the heat in the reading rooms during the summer lTIonths n1akes it highly desirable to have the new light introduced as soon as possible.
