It was eight years ago when Special Olympics Georgia Forsyth County wasintroduced to Britt Hall: SOGA athlete, Georgia Aquarium employee and avidGeorgia Sports fan. "The first sport I started competing in with Special Olympicswas softball. I was with the Forsyth Golden Gloves, and we were a pretty goodteam," commented Britt as he reflected on his first state games.

Since then, the multi-sport athlete has competed in much more than softball.

Britt has gone on to compete and excel in ice speed skating, bocce, basketball,

athletics, table tennis, volleyball and flag football during his Special Olympics

Georgia career. This year, the decorated athlete will return to the 2017 State

Summer Games as a member of the Forsyth County Mean Machine, one of

the county's flag football teams, and while the word "mean" may be in their

name, it is certainly not in the team's attitude. "We want to win gold, but we

want to be nice to the other teams and encourage them. They are our friends

and have worked just as hard," explained Britt.

While athletes are encouraged to try their very best and go for the gold, SpecialOlympics Georgia focuses on the lessons and ideals of sportsmanship andfriendship during competitions. "Special Olympics Georgia not only brings out the inner-athlete withmany of these children and adults, but gives them the reassurance and sense of community to see theircompetitors as friends," explained Jack, Britt's father.

No matter whether you are an athlete, coach, partner, family member or fan, Britt assures that

Our Athlete of the Month: Deon Grant

Deon GrantDeon Grant has been a Special Olympics Georgia athlete for over 10

years, participating in bocce, equestrian, alpine skiing, soccer, flag

football and basketball. Not only known to Special Olympics Georgia

Colquitt County as a tremendously talented athlete, Deon also has the

reputation of being one of the most dependable and team-oriented

individuals. These qualities add to Deon's success on and off the field.

Deon's successful career in SOGA has not been limited to just the state

of Georgia or the United States. The gold medalist was selected to

represent Team USA at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games

in Austria as an Ice Speed Skater. Deon did not disappoint, competing

and bringing home the gold medal in the 222 Meter Speed Skating event

and bringing back a fourth place ribbon in the 333 Meter Speed Skating event.

When Deon is not training and competing for SOGA, he works at the Colquitt Regional Medical Center

as a Dietary Aide. With a stellar athletic career already under his belt, Deon is excited to continue his

experience with SOGA, continuing to grow as an athlete and a member of the community.

Congratulations, Deon, on being May's Athlete of the Month!

The SOGA CommunityOur Volunteer of the Month: Tom Bullock

Tom Bul lock Tom Bul lock became involved with SOGA 34 years ago at

the 1983 State Summer Games in Brunswick. With no

experience with SOGA athletes or competitions prior to those

games, the organization has become a vital part of Tom's

life.

After the State Summer Games, Tom became certified to

coach softball, soccer, volleyball, floor hockey, bowling and

athletics. In Brunswick, Tom put that certification to use

coaching Masters-aged athletes (athletes 22 years or older) in

softball, volleyball and soccer.

In 1989, Tom's hard work was recognized as he was named

SOGA's Coach of the Year, as well as the head coach for

USA's Floor Hockey Team that competed at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Reno,

Nevada. Under Tom's leadership, the team won silver, being the first team to score against Special

Olympics Canada during those games.

From then on, Tom's work at World Games continued to grow. In 1991, he was named the Head

Track and Field Coach at the Special Olympics World Summer Games. He took on the role as a Floor

Hockey Official in 1997 at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, and he has continued to serve

in an official's role at six World Games and two National Games.

In addition to his roles as coach and official, Tom was an athlete mentor through the SOOPA program

and currently works with SOGA coaches as a certified clinician, directing trainings at Coaches' Clinics

in floor hockey, softball and athletics.

Congratulations, Tom, on being May's Volunteer of the Month!
