The International School of Minnesota prides itself on its sports programs and strives to continue to improve on an annual basis. We believe in an intelligent and scientific approach to athletic training and therefore use proven developmental models as a foundation for our curriculum. Coaches strive to use the four stages of development in each practice: warm-up, small-sided activity, expanded game like activity, and scrimmage or game. This structure allows a student to learn a new skill or theory at the beginning of a practice and slowly apply it with increasing speed and pressure. This process helps cement the skill or theory into muscle memory so that it can be automatically applied in games.

The other critical element of Husky athletics is FUN! We believe that developing a passion for the sport/activity is the first step to success in any field. Passionate children will put forth that extra effort outside of practice and become that special player or participant. We also want to encourage students to be multi-sport athletes. Studies have shown that well-rounded, multi-sport athletes have the highest potential to achieve the goal of lifelong fitness and enjoyment of physical activity while avoiding some of the pitfalls of overuse, over-training, and burnout. We also want to emphasize a certain type of fun as well. Instead of the “quick fun” or “extrinsic fun,” we want to promote “intrinsic fun.” This type of fun occurs when one sets a challenging goal and then meets that goal. By establishing that culture early, we hope to help create motivated individuals who know how to succeed for life.

The International School of Minnesota also believes in a using a scientific approach to coaching. Our coaches rely on the guidelines set by a variety of sources including:

• National Federation of High School Leagues • Minnesota State High School League• Individual Sport Governing Bodies

o United States Soccer Federationo USA Volleyballo USA Basketballo USATFo USA Ultimateo USTA

• Research journals in the fields of Psychology, and Kinesiology

The mission of The International School of Minnesota athletics is to provide a top quality athletic experience to our diverse student body,

while preparing them for lifelong success by building the skills necessary for an ethical,

moral and healthy character.

WE BELIEVE THAT…• Participation in school athletic programs is a privilege and not a right. • Sportsmanship needs to have a constant presence in all school-based athletic

programs. • Success is transferable across different fields• Ethical behavior, dignity and respect are expected and non-negotiable. • Collaborative relationships with parents enhance The School’s opportunity to

positively impact student success. • Academic priorities must come before participation in athletic activities. • Positive role models and an active involvement in a student’s life by parents and

others are critical to student success. • High school athletic programs are designed for student participants, and adults

must serve in a supportive role. • The success of the team is more important than individual honors. • Compliance with school, community and Minnesota State High School League

(MSHSL) rules is essential for all activity participants. • Participation in school-sponsored athletics must be inclusive, not exclusive.

Ethical behavior, fairness, and embracing diversity best serve students and school communities.

POLICY HIGHLIGHTS

• Academics and family take priority over athletics• Be aware of the time demands and commitments of the activity• Attendance is taken into consideration when determining playing time• Students may not play until cleared by the Athletic Director• A student will automatically become ineligible for Athletics if they are failing a

course. Grades will be compiled on a weekly basis. The student must then be certified eligible by the AQC. This will happen if the student brings the grade out of the failing range, or by developing and following an academic plan set in conjunction with the Student Management Coordinator (SMC), the US Academic Quality Controller (AQC), and parents, which will allow them to spend the proper amount of time studying to ensure academic success.

• Students may not use, or be in possession of, chemicals including alcohol, tobacco, or any other controlled substance from the first signing of the Student Eligibility Brochure. There are stiff punishments for violations.

DEBATEDebate hones the faculties of logic, reasoning, analysis, and critical thinking, preparing students to succeed in school, college, leadership, and life. Debaters practice both written and oral communication, learning how to persuade and convince through evidence and reason. Students must prepare cases both for and against the resolution, so they learn to look at an issue from all angles. High school debate is a competitive intramural speaking activity. Several debate formats exist, but Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate, modeled after the famous Illinois senatorial debates of 1858, is the most widely practiced and accessible. The original Lincoln-Douglas debates focused mostly on slavery, and LD debate maintains this tradition by engaging students with the most salient and thorny ethical and moral questions of our time.
