387 career victories. Ten consecutive 30-win seasons. Thirty players who have earned a total of 47 all-conference honors. Sixteen NCAA Regional appearances as either a head coach, assistant coach or player. By any measure, Kelly Kovach Schoenly is a winner. And through six seasons leading Ohio State, she has the Buckeyes positioned to write the next chapter in its storied history. In her first six seasons in Columbus, Schoenly’s teams have won 199 games, including 13 over teams ranked in the Top 25. Sixteen of her players have earned All-Big Ten or NFCA All-Midwest Region honors. And just as important, the Buckeyes are excelling in the classroom. In 2014, five players garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the most of any softball program in the conference. In 2018, the Buckeyes tallied 36 wins, the most in a season since 2010 and during Schoenly’s tenure. She had five Buckeyes earn All-Big Ten honors and four receive NFCA All-Region recognition. Schoenly coached the squad to a 15-8 mark in the Big Ten to finish third in the conference standings. The team also advanced to the Big Ten Championship game for the first time since 2007. The Buckeyes earned their second-straight trip to the Knoxville Regional. Schoenly spent six seasons as head coach at Miami (Ohio) and was the program’s all-time winningest coach with 188 career victories, leading

the RedHawks to their first MAC Tournament title in 2009 before winning again in 2012. Schoenly also led the team to two NCAA Tournament berths in both 2009 and 2012, respectively. Prior to her stint at Miami, Schoenly was an assistant coach at Penn State (1998-2006) for eight seasons and helped guide the Nittany Lions to seven Big Ten Tournament appearances and six NCAA Tournament berths. Before her time in State College, Schoenly was an assistant at her alma mater, Michigan, for three years (1996-98), helping the squad reach the NCAA Women’s College World Series three consecutive times. During her collegiate pitching career at Michigan (1991-95), Schoenly earned numerous conference and national awards, including 1995 NFCA First-Team All-America honors. A two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and three-time all-conference selection, Schoenly was a member of three Big Ten Conference Championship teams and played on the 1995 squad, which finished seventh at the NCAA Women’s College World Series. A two-time GTE Academic All-American, Schoenly received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Michigan in December of 1995. After receiving the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Schoenly went on to earn her master’s degree in elementary mathematics education from Michigan in May of 1998. Jenna Hall finished her sixth season as an assistant coach with the Buck-eye softball program in 2018.

Hall helped coach Lilli Piper, a NFCA second team All-American, to a program single-season record 20 home runs in 2018.

In 2016, Buckeye hitters either tied or broke three long-standing records - Cammi Prantl became the program’s all-time hits and doubles leader while Alex Bayne tied the single-season school record with 19 home runs.

Under Hall’s guidance, the Buckeyes rewrote the hitting record books in 2015, setting school records for batting average (.348), home runs (74) and run scored (380). Ohio State also led the Big Ten in batting average as 12 player hit .300 or better. For the first time in program history, four players finished with 40+ RBI, inclduing Erika Leonard, who drove in 60 runs (and a Big Ten-record 37 in conference play).

Hall, who was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach at Ohio in December 2011, helped guide the Bobcats to the finals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament three times, and the most confer-ence wins in a ten-year period in both 2010 and 2012. In addition, she oversaw three of the best Ohio offensive lineups in school history during the 2009, 2010 and 2012 campaigns, respectively.

After Hall helped coach Ohio to a postseason berth in 2008, she worked with an offense in 2009 that recorded offensive marks that rank among the Top 10 in seven offensive categories, including hitting (fourth), runs scored (eighth), hits (10th), home runs (fourth), doubles (tied-fifth), triples (tied-fourth) and RBI (ninth). Hall helped the 2010 offense record the tenth highest batting average and RBI, in addition to breaking the schools home run record with 33.

Prior to her time in Athens, Hall served as the student assistant coach at her alma mater - Illinois - under head coach Terri Sullivan. While at Illinois, she left her mark on the program as a four-year starter and team captain, in addition to planting her name in the school’s record books.

The Fighting Illini’s all-time record holder for best career and single-season batting averages, Hall is also the program’s all-time single-season fielding percentage record holder. As a senior, she led the nation in walks and was a finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year Award. She graduated in May 2007 with a degree in history.

Hall concluded her professional career playing for the Philadelphia Force, a professional team with the National Pro Fastpitch League. In her first year with the Force, she was selected to the NPF All-Star Team.

Jordan Clark was added to the Ohio State staff as an assistant coach in July 2018.

Clark spent the last three seasons at Arkansas, serving as a volunteer assistant coach. She helped the Razorbacks to consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018, including the Super Regionals this past season. Clark was part of a staff that was named the 2018 NFCA Division I South Region Staff of the Year after leading the squad to 42 wins, the third most in program history. The 2018 Razorbacks finished the season with a 27-2 record on their home field, a new record for home wins in a single season. During her time in Fayetteville, Clark served as the first-base coach while working directly with Arkansas’ outfielders and the team’s base running.

Clark’s addition is a reunion of sorts seeing as she was a four-year stand-out at Miami (OH) under Schoenly from 2009-12. She finished her playing career with top-five program rankings in at-bats, runs, hits and walks. She was a two-year team captain, two-time Mid-American Conference per-former and the 2012 recipient of the MAC’s Nan Harvey Sportsmanship Award. Clark helped Miami to a pair of MAC Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths both in 2009 and 2012.

Prior to her time at Arkansas, Clark spent two years as an instructor with Diamond Athletics. In the role, she provided one-on-one lessons and organized skills clinics. Clark was also a coach in the Desoto County School District. She also has past experience in travel ball as a co-head coach for the 14U softball team within the New Jersey Intensity program.

CLARK

PIPER IS PROGRAMS 12TH ALL-AMERICANLilli Piper put an exclamation point on her standout 2018 season by earning second team All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Piper is the 12th All-American in pro-gram history and earned her second distinction in as many years.

Piper continued to make a name for herself nationally over the course of the 2018 season. Through 52 games, she led the Big Ten in slugging percentage (.876), home runs (20) and total bases (141) while ranking second in batting (.404) and RBI (58). She also topped the team in nearly every offensive category thanks to 50 runs scored, 65 hits, 14 doubles, nine stolen bases and a .487 on-base percentage.

The NFCA first team All-Midwest Region honoree cemented her place in program history after setting the single-season home run mark with 20 round-trippers. Her 50 runs and 58 RBI helped her join Maddy McIntyre ’16 as the only members of the 50/50 club in Ohio State history. Piper’s .876 slugging percentage is the third-highest mark in the Big Ten single-season records. In Ohio State’s record book, her 58 RBI is third-best in a single season, 50 runs scored ranks fifth, .404 average stands seventh and 14 doubles ties for 10th most.

Piper played a key role in the Buckeyes’ 16 wins over RPI Top-75 teams. In the 22 regular season games against such opponents, she hit .379 with 22 runs scored, 19 RBI, nine home runs, six doubles and a .909 slugging percentage. A unanimous first team All-Big Ten and All-Defensive Team selection, Piper had an 11-game hitting streak (Feb. 10-Mar. 10) and reached base in 18 consecutive outings (Mar. 25-Apr. 29). She also had a team-high 19 multi-hit games and 18 multi-RBI contests.

With Piper’s help, Ohio State finished the season at 36-16 and 14-8 in the Big Ten. The 36 victories are the most since 2010 and high-est total under Schoenly. The Buckeyes earned their third straight at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and made it to the Gainesville Regional final.

BEATING TTUNIt was a great day to be a Buckeye when Ohio State handed Michi-gan its first run-rule loss in Ann Arbor since 2000 on May 6. The Scarlet & Gray won in impressive fashion with a 10-1 victory over the Wolverines to close the regular season.

THE SWING OF THINGS Ohio State consistently swung for more than a single with 150 extra-base hits. The Buckeyes tallied 75 doubles, 11 triples and 64 home runs during 2018. Seven players contributed to the home run total, including four with at least 10 round trips.

MORE MILESTONESHead coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly is the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 wins. In 12 years as a head coach (six years at Miami, six at Ohio State), she has won 30 or more games in 10 straight seasons. Schoenly currently has 199 wins while at the helm for the Buckeyes and 387 career victories.

EXTRA BASES• The Buckeyes’ 36 wins on the season is the most under head coach

Home plate remains where it has rested at Buckeye Field since 1988, but little else remains the same for the Ohio State softball complex after $5.9 million of stadium renovations. The historical and record-breaking 2009 season marked the first in the 1,500-seat New Buckeye Field - a facility that is undoubtedly among the finest in the country.

In addition to nearly doubling Buckeye Field’s previous capacity of 800, the new stadium includes indoor and outdoor batting cages, a three-plate bullpen, a 650-square foot press box, player clubhouse and locker room, new dugouts, coaches and umpires dressing room and concession areas.

Dedicated April 11, 2009, with the game against Illinois, Buckeye Field quickly became the site of some record-breaking crowds. Some 1,277 fans watched Ohio State defeat the Illini 5-0 after a pregame ceremony that honored the donors, administrators and construction entities that made the building possible.

The field dimensions will remain 190 feet down the left and right field lines and 220 feet to center field. The Kentucky bluegrass and Perennial Rye make Buckeye Field a player-friendly surface.

NOTABLE GAMES IN BUCKEYE FIELD HISTORY April 9, 2017: A single-game record crowd of 1,836 fans filled the stadium to see the Buckeyes blank Michigan, 5-0. The win snapped Michigan’s 14-game winning streak. The 4,979 fans that attended April 8-9 for the Michigan series was the highest attended series in school history.

April 24, 2016: A then-record crowd of 1,627 watched the Buckeyes erase a three-run seventh inning deficit by scoring four times in their final at-bat to secure a 5-4 win over Purdue.

May 7, 2015: In their opening game of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes scored a program-record 24 runs while Erika Leonard went four-for-four with a pair of grand slams and 10 RBI.

May 12, 2007: Ohio State won the program first-ever Big Ten Tournament championship with a 2-1 walk-off win over sixth-ranked Northwestern. Megan Schwab scored the winning run when an errant thrown for NU third baseman Darcy Sengewald sailed high to first base. OSU clinched the Big Ten’s regular season title just a week earlier with a 4-0 shutout of Penn State.

May 15, 2010: A then-record crowd of 1,623 watched as Ohio State rolled to a 16-0 run-rule victory over Northwestern on the strength of nine combined RBI from Alicia Herron and Whitney Cooper. The win gave the Buckeyes a 16-2 Big Ten record, its second 16-win conference season in the last four years.

April 11, 2009: Alicia Herron hit a three-run home run and Kim Reeder pitched a three-hitter as the Buckeyes dedicated the new Buckeye Field with a 5-0 win over Illinois. Over 1,200 fans packed the new stadium, which has just recently completed a major upgrade to include a new press box, concessions stands, locker rooms and indoor hitting facility.

ABOUT THE CHARITY CLASSIC• Over the last 18 years, the OCCC has raised over $200,000, making it

one of the largest fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness month in central Ohio.

• In 2018, a total of 20 teams participated in the event from Ohio and neighboring states.

• Admission to the games is free, while entrance to the OCCC is a $5 donation with all proceeds benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund.

ABOUT THE SPIELMAN FUND AND THE OSUCCC-JAMES• The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research is devoted to

advancing research in breast cancer. One hundred percent of every gift to the fund goes directly to research at Ohio State’s Comprehen-sive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James).

• In June 2014, the fund reached $15.4 million in contributions.• The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is the

patient-care component of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. The James is the largest cancer hospital in the Mid-west and the third largest in the nation. It consists of over 300 cancer researchers.

Since the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) was founded in 1998, thou-sands of individuals, companies and charitable foundations have entrusted their philanthropic dollars to the fund.

From day one, the Spielman Fund has made good on its promise to do-nors through smart fiscal management and a prudent spending plan that ensures funds are allocated where they are needed most. When donors designate their charitable contribution to the Spielman Fund, they can trust that their gift—along with the generosity of others who share their desire to help find a cure for breast cancer—will make an important and strategic impact.

Made up of an endowment and current use fund, the Spielman Fund has been engineered to guarantee that both the long-term vision and current needs in breast cancer research have been well accounted for. The fund’s investment approval team includes OSUCCC Director and James CEO Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, OSUCCC-James Senior Executive Director for Administration Jeff Walker, and Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center Director William Farrar, MD—as well as Chris Spielman.

The majority of donations made to the Spielman Fund are designated as current use gifts—meaning they are to be spent in full rather than invested for the long term. The total amount of current use giving fluctuates each year but has averaged approximately $2.25 million in recent years. The current use portion of the Spielman Fund connects the OSUCCC – James team of physicians and experts to vital research dollars meant to rapidly advance promising science.

Investments made by the fund have enabled Ching-Shih Chen, PhD, to study novel therapeutic agents that selectively target metabolic and sur-vival machineries in breast cancer cells; Sarmila Majumder, PhD, to explore the emerging role of microRNAs in drug-resistant breast cancer; creation of a designated fellowship in breast cancer research; and more. And, ac-cording to OSUCCC – James Executive Director of Development Jennifer McDonald, current use dollars may soon create a new multi-investigator grant opportunity that will connect OSUCCC – James researchers to those at other institutions doing novel work. “One of the ways we’re going to beat breast cancer is by collaborating with other institutions across the country,” says McDonald. “This grant, similar to an R01 grant from the National Insti-tutes of Health (NIH), would provide seed funding for investigators to prove that their work has merit and is worthy of additional funding from NIH or the National Cancer Institute.

“‘With each year, each month, and each day there are new breakthroughs and possibilities in the fight against cancer.’ Those were my wife, Stefanie’s, words and they have given me the strength and determination to carry on her dream of ending the terrible disease. I am grateful to each and every one of you for joining me in the continuing Stefanie’s legacy of hope. I am thrilled to announce that Spielman Fund reached $15.4 million in 2014. This is an outstanding achievement and it is because of generous support that we have reached this milestones.

Fortunately, I have been part of many great teams during my life and I am humbled to be a part of a team that will one day find a cure for cancer.”
