Robert Spano

Recognized as one of the most imaginative conductors of his generation, Robert Spano is currently in his 13th season as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO), where he has created a sense of inclusion, warmth, and community unique among American orchestras.

Under Mr. Spano’s guidance, the ASO and its audiences explore a creative programming mix. The Atlanta School of Composers reflects his commitment to American contemporary music, thus defining a new generation of American composers. He has led ASO performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and at the Ravinia, Ojai, and Savannah Music Festivals.

As Music Director of the Aspen Music Festival and School, he oversees the programming of more than 300 events and educational programs for 630 students, including Aspen’s American Academy of Conducting. Guest engagements include the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, and Philadelphia Symphony Orchestras, as well as Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, BBC Symphony, and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has conducted for Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and the 2005 and 2009 Seattle Opera Ring cycles.

With an extensive discography of 21 recordings for Telarc, Deutsche Grammophon, and ASO Media, Mr. Spano has garnered six Grammy Awards. Dedicated to pedagogy and multi-disciplinary studies, he has lectured on “Community” for TEDx and recently completed a three-year residency at Emory University. He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

Mr. Spano is on the faculty of Oberlin Conservatory, and has received honorary doctorates from Bowling Green State University, the Curtis Institute of Music, Emory University, and Oberlin. Mr. Spano served as director of the Festival of Contemporary Music at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center in 2003 and 2004, and from 1996 to 2004 was Music Director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. He headed the Conducting Fellowship Program at the Tanglewood Music Center from 1998 to 2002. In May 2009, Mr. Spano was awarded Columbia University’s Ditson Conductor’s Award for the advancement of American music.

T®aditionsFrom Santa Claus and elves, to menorahs and nativities,

they surround us each holiday season. by Noel Jingle Festivus

I recently spent some time talking to various Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians, chorus

members, student musicians, donors, and staff to learn what traditions live among the “ASO Family.” I heard about traditional visits to the stunning Magical Nights of Lights at Lake Lanier; taking grandkids for a ride on the Pink Pig; watching the Children’s

Christmas Parade on Peachtree Street; and attending the lighting of Macy’s Great Tree at Lenox Square. Others said they take aspiring ballerinas to the Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker; enjoy the Alliance Theatre’s annual “A Christmas Carol”; or, naturally, take in the traditional “Christmas with the ASO,” created by former ASO Music Director Robert Shaw.

Now, let’s be honest. Some holiday memories are just funny. One staffer told me she and her sister once had to enlist a neighbor to save their babysitter from under a fully-decorated Christmas tree that had fallen on her. Another shared how a Christmas Eve was spent on a 20-degree deck after the house filled smoke because her father-in-law forgot to open the fireplace flue! And let’s not forget the tale of a Christmas Eve service in which the incense was a bit strong. So strong, in fact, it set off the fire alarm in the church, causing the congregation to evacuate. It’s okay to laugh — these are the things holiday memories are made of.

While I can’t share all I learned, some highlights and favorite traditions are included below. I hope you enjoy reading these, and I hope you will continue to make these holiday concerts one of your favorite holiday traditions.

“My family and I have a Christmas tradition

which we do every year. When wrapping gifts, we try to disguise them by wrapping them in odd shapes, with extra weight...anything to make the gift as confusing and misleading as possible. Sometimes it can be simple, but other times a gift can have up to 10 layers of deception. It can make the gift-opening process extremely fun!” – Stuart Stephenson,

ASO Principal Trumpet

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of my

favorite holiday tradition: the annual Poe family Christmas party. Now with 18 kinds of cheesecake and another dozen varieties of cookies and cakes —all homemade by my fam-ily— our spread of sweets is unrivaled. People have been known to fly in from across the country for the occasion, which has become an essential part of many other families’ traditions as well. There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than with dear friends, delicious desserts, and a glass of champagne!” –Kathleen Poe Ross, ASO Chorus Member

“Chanukah has always been one of our favorite holidays. Though the

season is cold, Chanukah is one of the warmest of our holiday traditions… with a focus on celebrating family — from newborn babies to great-grandparents. Beginning decades ago, we would gather around the piano while my father played a traditional Chanukah song. We lit the Menorah candles and exchanged gifts; there were screams of joy. We gave thanks for good health, happiness and the blessings of family. The tradition continues to this day as more than 20 people gather at Great Grandma’s house this year.” –Deedee & Marc Hamburger, ASO Donors

“Everyone in our family played an instrument growing up, so every

Christmas my Uncle Everitt puts together our family band. We set up in Grandma Lucille’s living room and play together. The day after Christmas is our annual family ping-pong tournament. If you win, you get your name on the wall and everything! My cousin, Brandon Craswell — UGA trumpet professor and frequent ASO substitute musician — is the all-time winner and I’m the all-time runner up!” –Nathan Zgonc, ASO Trombone

“Every holiday season, my family loves to put together thousand-piece

Christmas puzzles. Spreading the puzzle pieces all over the coffee table and putting them together by lamplight signals the definite start of Christmas. We stay up late every night until it is finished, and then go and buy another one. Often times, we like to glue and frame the puzzles, but not before writing the date we finished it on the back. This way we can always remember the fun we had spending time together during the Christmas season.” –Leah Bonas, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra Violinist

“Every Christmas season, my family begins by celebrating the Swedish

Festival of Lights: St. Lucia. Then on Christmas Eve, we have a massive Swedish smörgåsbord with an abundance of cheeses, Swedish meatballs, lutefisk, and Glögg. In Swedish we say ‘God Jul och Gott nytt år’ for Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!” –Lauren Turner, ASO Associate Manger of Individual Giving

From our “ASO Family” to yours, happy holidays!

NOTES ON THE PROGRAM

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750)Part II of Weihnachts-Oratorium (Christmas Oratorio), BWV 248 (1734)

Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, on March 21, 1685, and died in Leipzig, Germany, on July 28, 1750. The first performance of the Christmas Oratorio took place in Leipzig during the period from December 25, 1734, to January 6, 1735. The Christmas Oratorio is scored for solo soprano,

alto, tenor and bass, mixed chorus, two flutes, four oboes, two oboe d’amore, two oboe da caccia, bassoon, two horns, three trumpets, timpani, continuo, and strings.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is one of three works (the others being the

Easter and Ascension Oratorios, BWV Nos. 249 and 11) composed between 1734-36 for performance, during festival occasions in the city of Leipzig. The Christmas Oratorio was first presented during the Christmas season of 1734-35. The work is divided into six parts. An individual section was presented during each of the following holidays: the first three days of Christmas, the Feast of the Circumcision, the Sunday after New Year and the Feast of the Epiphany. As was the custom, the Christmas Oratorio was performed in both of Leipzig’s main churches, although worshippers could hear parts III and V only at the Nikolaikirche.

Despite the six-part division and presenta-tion of the work, Bach clearly envisioned the Christmas Oratorio as a unified opus. In the score’s title page, Bach refers to the work as an “Oratorium Tempore Nativitatis Christi.” The use of the word “Oratorio” denotes an organic work divided into six movements, as opposed to six independent cantatas. This sense of unity is further demonstrated by the relationship of the keys between the various Parts (D-G-D-F-A-D) that clearly establishes D Major as the Christmas Oratorio’s tonal base. Moreover, the initial chorale melody of Part I (No. 5: “Wie soll dich empfangen”) returns in triumphant form to conclude the Oratorio’s Sixth and Final Part (No. 64: “Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen”).

It is not entirely certain who fashioned the libretto for the Christmas Oratorio. Most scholars identify the librettist as Christian Friedrich Henrici (pen name Picander), who composed the texts for several Bach compo-sitions, including the St. Matthew Passion. However, those scholars are also quick to note the text of the Christmas Oratorio is not included among Picander’s published works.

The central biblical narrative of the Christmas Oratorio is derived from the Gospels of St. Luke (2:1, 3-21) and St. Matthew (2:1-12), relating the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, up to and including the worship of the Child by the Three Wise Men. Chorales and original poetic writings, known as “free verse,” serve to reflect and embellish the biblical text.

This concert will feature Parts II of the Christmas Oratorio, based upon the Gospel According to St. Luke, 2: 8-14. For the most part, the Evangelist (tenor) declaims the bibli-cal text. Striking exeptions occur as the Angel brings the people “tidings of great joy” (No. 13) and when the “multitude of the heavenly host” (Chorus) proclaims “Glory be to God in the highest” (No. 21).

The music for the vocal soloists requires the utmost in flexibility, beauty of tone, and clarity of declamation. Bach also takes great care to create an instrumental palette that reflects the mood and spirit of the narrative. For example, Part II, relating the discovery of Christ’s birth by the shepherds, is decidedly pastoral in nature, with prominent use of the woodwinds. And of course, at the center of the glorious setting of this magnificent story rests the voice of the people, portrayed through Bach’s incomparable choral writing.

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL (1685-1759Christmas Portion and “Hallelujah!” Chorus from Messiah (1742)

George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, Germany, on February 23, 1685, and died in London, England, on April 14, 1759. The first performance of Messiah took place at the New Music Hall on Fishamble Street, Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742. Messiah is scored for solo soprano, alto, tenor and bass, mixed chorus, two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, timpani, organ, continuo, and strings.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Recording: Robert Shaw, Conductor (Telarc CD-80093, 2 discs)

The creation of George Frideric Handel’s most beloved work, Messiah, took place

during a challenging period in the compos-er’s life. The steady decline in London of the popularity of Italian opera had caused Handel tremendous financial hardship. In addition, Handel’s rigorous work schedule had taken a profound toll on the compos-

er’s health. By the summer of 1741, a period of lethargy had set in.

It was at this point that Handel received a libretto for a new work, an oratorio based upon the birth, life, crucifixion, and resur-rection of Jesus Christ. The author of the libretto was Charles Jennens, who collabo-rated with Handel on several oratorios.

Handel began composition of Messiah on August 22, 1741. There seems to be no question that the libretto, based upon the Old and New Testaments, proved to be a source of majestic inspiration. Handel, working at a lightning pace, composed Messiah in just 24 days.

Once Handel completed Messiah, he focused his attention upon Samson, anoth-er oratorio inspired by the Bible. It was during this period that Handel accepted an invitation to travel to Dublin for a series of concerts in aid of charity. In November, Handel set sail for Dublin, bringing with him several works for performance at the charity concerts. Among those works was Messiah.

No. 22. Recitative, BassSo it is right, you angels, rejoice and sing, that things have turned out so well for us

today! Up then! We will join our voices with

yours, for we can rejoice just as you.

No. 23. ChoraleWe sing to You in Your host with all our strength: laud, praise and

glory, that You, o long-desired Guest, has now appeared.

The premiere of Messiah took place at Dublin’s New Music Hall in Fishamble Street on April 13, 1742. Three days prior to the performance, the Dublin Journal printed the following admonition:

Many Ladies and Gentlemen who are well-wishers to this Noble and Grand Charity for which this Oratorio was composed, request it as a Favour, that the Ladies who honour this Performance with their Presence would be pleased to come without Hoops, as it will greatly increase the Charity, by making room for more company.

Gentlemen were also requested to refrain from bringing their swords to the perfor-mance, again for the purpose of increasing the audience capacity.

The performance was a tremendous success. As the Dublin Journal reported:

(T)he best Judges allowed (Messiah) to be the most finished piece of music. Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crowded audience. The Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestic and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear. It is but justice to Mr. Handel, that the World should know, he generously gave the Money arising from this Grand Performance, to be equally shared by the Society for relieving Prisoners, the Charitable Infirmary, the Mercer’s Hospital, for which they will ever gratefully remember his Name…

The London premiere of Messiah, which took place at Covent Garden on March 23, 1743, was more problematic. It appears

that the London public accorded Handel’s Messiah a mixed reception. However, at least according to one observer, those in attendance —including a very prominent member of the audience— were particu-larly moved by a portion of the oratorio. This resulted in the birth of a tradition that continues to this day: “When the chorus struck up ‘for the Lord God Omnipotent’ (in the ‘Hallelujah’ Chorus), they were so transported that they all together, with the King (who happened to be present), started up and remained standing till the chorus ended.”

On April 6, 1759, Handel made his final public appearance, conducting a London performance of Messiah. Eight days later, Handel was dead at the age of 74. The funeral, held in Westminster Abbey, attract-ed an estimated 3,000 mourners. Three years later, the great church unveiled a monument to Handel, created by the French sculptor, Louis François Roubiliac. The monument depicts Handel, holding the score of Messiah. Overhead, an angel plays a lyre. The score is opened to the soprano solo that serves to begin the oratorio’s Third Part: “I know that my redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.”

This concert features Part I, the Christmas Portion, of Messiah, as well as the “Hallelujah!” Chorus from Part II.

The first Nowell the angels did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields as

they lay;In fields where they lay, keeping their

sheep,On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel!

They lookèd up and saw a star,Shining in the east, beyond them far;And to the earth it gave great light,And so it continued both day and night.Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heav’nly Lord,That hath made heav’n and earth of

naught,And with His blood mankind hath bought.Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel!

ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CHORUS

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus was founded in 1970 by former ASO Music Director Robert Shaw. Comprised of 200 auditioned voices, the Chorus is an all-volunteer organization which performs on a regular basis with the ASO, and is featured on many of the Orchestra’s recordings.

Led by ASO Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie, the Chorus is known for its pre-cision and expressive singing quality. Their recordings with the ASO have won multiple Grammy® Awards, including Best Choral Performance, Best Classical Recording, and Best Opera Recording. Those include Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony and the Berlioz Requiem.

The ASOC performs large choral-symphonic works with the full Orchestra under the batons of Music Director Robert Spano and Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles. In addition, the Chorus has been involved in the creation and shaping of numerous world-premiere commissioned choral works.

The Chorus made its debut at New York’s famous Carnegie Hall in 1976, with a perfor-mance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. In addition, the Chorus performed in Washington, D.C., for President-elect Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural Concert in 1977. The Chorus has toured most of Europe, and in 1996 performed with the Orchestra in the Opening Ceremonies of the Centennial Olympic Games.

Within the Chorus, there is an auditioned group of 60 called the ASO Chamber Chorus. The Chamber Chorus, which formed before the larger Chorus in 1967, performs music of the Baroque and Classical eras, as well as works by modern masters.

METROPOLITAN BALLET THEATREManiya Barredo, Artistic Director & Choreographer Andrea Pell, Ballet Mistress

The mission of Metropolitan Ballet Theatre (MBT) is to train young dancers in the art of classical ballet and promote excellence based on the highest standards of integrity and

professionalism. Each dancer is taught with respect, love, and responsibility. The Metropolitan Ballet Theatre creates performance opportunities; introduces and exposes dancers to different dance styles, choreography, and choreographers; and nurtures dancers into the artists of the future. The purpose of MBT is to create an atmosphere of self-competition and inner growth nurtured with love and mutual respect. Through this process, students learn the values of disci-pline, commitment, hard work, passion, integrity, respect, trust, and excellence.

MANIYA BARREDO, Director and CEO

In 1978, Maniya Barredo was awarded the title of Prima Ballerina by Dame Margot Fonteyn, one of this century’s most beloved ballerinas. She began studying dance at age four in her native Philippines. At age 18, she traveled to New York, where she was awarded a scholarship to the Joffrey School. While a company member with the Joffrey Ballet, Ms. Barredo earned a spot with Les Grandes Ballet Canadians in Montreal. In 1976, she represented Canada in the International Ballet Festival in Cuba.

Ms. Barredo has danced with the incomparable Mikhail Baryshnikov, toured with the Stars of the World Ballet, received the Gawad CCP Para Sining Award of Excellence from Filipino pres-ident Fidel Ramos, was the official Prima Ballerina of the Philippines, and danced for 20 years with the Atlanta Ballet as Prima Ballerina.

Ms. Barredo carries out her plans as she works with the next generation of dancers and brings excellence in dance to Atlanta and the world.  Snow WaltzOlivia FosterLisa FuLynn FuRebecca

A MERRY SING-ALONGSanta Claus is Coming to TownYou’d better watch out, You’d better not cry,Better not pout, I’m telling you why:Santa Claus is coming to town.

He’s making a list,And checking it twice,Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice,Santa Claus is coming to town.

He sees you when you’re sleeping,He knows when you’re awake,He knows if you’ve been bad or good,So be good for goodness sake!

Oh, you’d better watch out,You’d better not cry, Better not pout,I’m telling you why:Santa Claus is coming to town.

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed ReindeerRudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,Had a very shiny nose,And if you ever saw it,You would even say it glowed!

All of the other reindeer,Used to laugh and call him names. They’d never let poor RudolphJoin in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,Santa came to say:“Rudolph, with your nose so bright,Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then how the reindeer loved him,As they shouted out with glee:“Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,You’ll go down in history!”

Silver BellsCity sidewalks, busy sidewalks,Dressed in holiday style. In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas.Children laughing, people passing, Meeting smile after smile,And on every street corner you hear:

Silver bells, silver bells,It’s Christmas time in the city.Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,Soon it will be Christmas day.

Jingle BellsDashing through the snowIn a one-horse open sleigh,

O’er the fields we go,Laughing all the way;Bells on Bobtail’s ring,Making spirits bright,What fun it is to ride and singA sleighing song tonight!

Jingle bells, jingle bellsJingle all the way!Oh what fun it is to rideIn a one-horse open sleigh, Oh,Jingle bells, jingle bellsJingle all the way,Oh what fun it is to rideIn a one-horse open sleigh.

White ChristmasI’m dreaming of a White Christmas,Just like the ones I used to know.Where the treetops glisten, and children

listenTo hear sleigh-bells in the snow.

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas,With every Christmas card I write.May your days be merry and bright,And may all your Christmases be white.

The Patron Circle Each year The Woodruff Arts Center raises critical dollars in support of the organization’s day-to-day operations through the Annual Campaign. The Patron Circle contributors helped us exceed a $9.2 million goal, ensuring that our artistic divisions can continue to bring the best in visual and performing arts, as well as arts education, to millions of people in the year ahead.

The Woodruff Circle The Woodruff Arts Center and our four artis-tic divisions – the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences – rely on the generosity of those donors whose support extends to all parts of our organization. The members of The Woodruff Circle each contributed more than $250,000 to our efforts last year. We are deeply grateful to these 34 partners who help to ensure that the arts thrive in our city.

WE WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY.

Molly &Olivia PennPreemies

TWIN BLESSINGS AT GRADY.

Just before Christmas, we were told our twins were coming three months

early. It was surreal. There’s no way to prepare yourself for that. But from the

moment we got to Grady, we were taken care of. Whenever you walk into the

neonatal ICU, it doesn’t take five seconds for a nurse to come up to you and

talk you through anything you need. What a blessing. We have two beautiful

girls, and it was just fate that put us where we needed to be - at Grady.
